A source in distribution estimates porn DVD sales were down 10% in 2006 compared to the year before.
New porn producers are having a hard time getting paid by distributors who expect that the newcomers will fold.
Established producers are doing deals that they would never have considered a year ago, selling recent catalogue titles for as little as $3 per unit.
Wholesale units sold on new releases is down 30-50% compared to two years ago.
Some studios such as Smash Pictures are releasing comps as new titles. They'll include one new scene to put a recent production date on the box but most of the scenes will be comps.
These studios must think that buyers are so overwhelmed with product that they won't bother to check if a title is truly new.
I hear that Evil Angel's units sold have dropped by 50% compared to a couple of years ago.

A couple of weeks ago, I posted this:

Regarding DVDs, Tricia replies to my questions:
We're down about 10% [on] average, sometimes 20% on out-the-door units sold by street date from where we were 2 years ago. But nowhere near 50% down from 2 years ago.
Reorders during the first month are better than before, because of places like AdultDVDEmpire and other online places who don't order everything for street date, but instead do a good portion of their business in reorders to fill their own customer orders.
I will admit that when we bring out a DVD transfer of a movie which was originally put out on VHS in the '90s, those sales are not huge, but are still bigger than actual new DVD releases from most companies. We used to see big numbers from our VHS-to-DVD transfers, but that's not a sure thing anymore.
We've always done 1 or 2 sales per year, and have never brought our old titles down to permanent 'catalog' prices. That's still the case.
Re: more new releases... Company wide, yes. We now have 12 (or 13, if you count John) directors instead of the 8 or 9 we had 2 years ago. Back then, Joey was doing 3 or 4 movies every 2 months because of the wide range of genres, i.e. b/g, she-male, blowjob and now strap-on. He is still producing at the same rate. Rocco is doing more movies per year, and Justin was but is now back to 1 movie per month. Other than those two who chose to bump up their schedule (and are making proportionally more money - not doing more work for the same total money), all of our other directors still choose to make just one movie per month.
To adjust to the decline of DVD sales, we're strengthening our cable and DivX-type markets, and will be having a huge re-launch of our pay site network this year, which will include extensive VOD sites.
My source: "I will not put my name on this. I don't want to commit career suicide.
"Evil Angel are releasing more new DVDs. They're probably doing more specials. The directors checks may not be going down but their new release numbers (units sold per new release) are down by about 30-50% compared to two years ago. The directors are also getting checks from Evil's internet sites and sales, though I don't think these checks are significant."
Evil's bestselling directors are Justin Slayer, Belladonna, Rocco Siffredi and John Stagliano.
The top three bestselling directors in porn are probably Joone (Digital Playground), John Stagliano, and Jules Jordan.
I hear Jules is doing well. He's making at least as much money as he was with Evil Angel.

VOD and internet downloads are nowhere near making up for the loss of DVD sales.
Porn studios get about a 25% revenue share of the retail price of product sold on places such as AEBN and Hot Movies. So if the movie is sold for $10, they get $2:50.
When studios sell a new DVD, they get about $10 (unless you are Evil Angel, whose DVDs wholesale for about $15 and up).
Jules Jordan does double-discs on every title and gets a premium price (between $15 and $18) per new DVD wholesale.
Tricia Devereaux replies to my inquiries: "We go on a very specific pricing tier structure in which customers who purchase large quantities get a base price, while customers who purchase smaller numbers pay higher prices per unit. Because of this price structure, we sell a huge portion of our produce to the larger distributors, but we do also sell to smaller distributors who prefer receiving our product on the street date."
AVN reviews about 450 titles a month (which does not include comps). I believe the porn industry releases about 1000 titles a month, about half of which are compilations.
HD and Blu-ray have yet to move significant units, and with prices at around $60 per title retail, it is unlikely that they will sell in large numbers.
I talk to a pornographer who would know about these things.

Porner: "I think it [porn] will have zero effect."
Porn is credited with helping the triumph of VHS over Betamax, but nobody says porn has made any difference with laserdiscs, CDs, and DVDs.
Until recently, porn was thought to lead the way in the application of new communication technologies. Now I can't remember the last time that porn pushed forward an innovation that led to a benefit for the wider world. These days porn just copies from the mainstream with things like pornotube.com.
The porners I talk to can't think of any new technology that's going to be influenced by porn.
I can't recall The Los Angeles Times ever applying skepticism to the numbers given it by AVN and Vivid and company. This latest article is particularly credulous.
Gonzo movies are the most hurt by the DVD downturn, particularly Euro-gonzo. Because they are cheaper and easier to make, people rushed on board to shoot them. Now there's a massive over-supply.
"What you are trying to do now is appeal to Adam & Eve and Movie Gallery, who are capable of taking hundreds of units" says a source.
I remember running a Google search on Cayton Caley last week and it led right to a free five minute clip of her with Christian. Why would anyone pay to see Cayton when they can watch her in hardcore action for five minutes for free?
If a guy can build a library of two minute free clips, he never needs to buy porn. With Freeones.com and screwedupmovies.com, the consumer can live off them without spending a penny.
The free sites exist because a small number of consumers do click through them and purchase subscriptions to pay sites.

DVD is really toast its just a matter of time and HD over the internet will happen blowing the disc/player situatioin before costs and format war can be fought. Internet is now king, online pay as you view will dominate the future. There is and will increasingly be a black market in DVD's in the slum, poor area's for people who do not have/can not afford internet access. Anyone with a duplicator and has the balls/desperation to go up and down their ghetto selling dvds for $3 a time is the future for dvd.
DVD replication costs have bottomed out at about 30c per disc for large orders.

I think that Moxie is being unfair to Michael unless he knows specific information about his behavior with his clients.
California Rule of Professional Conduct 3-120 says in part: "B) A member shall not: (1) Require or demand sexual relations with a client incident to or as a condition of any professional representation."
While this rule does not absolutely preclude client-lawyer sexual relations, (I won't explain the loopholes here) a tradeoff of sex for legal services would get you professionally disciplined if such misbehavior was established.
I think that Michael is probably providing badly needed services to a market of people who need to have their interests represented in contract negotiations. I imagine the typical negotiation pits a 19 or 21 year old against one of a wide variety of producers and promoters who as a class have a reputation for sharp business practices. So instead of their "boyfriend" or some other grifter providing advice, they can hire a legal counsel to help them get the best deal possible,in an industry in which most performers do not last that long. I don't know how Michael charges, but I suspect he could obtain a percentage of the deals he negotiates for clients that would ensure that he would not be engaging in the bad behavior that Moxie alludes to.
So in conclusion, unless someone has a specific complaint against Michael for his actions while representing clients. (such as overcharging them) I think that he is providing a much needed service.

She claims she saw cops stealing money from drug dealers and planting drugs on innocent victims. The only specific case she mentions involved a 33-year police veteran she said she took down. No dates. No names. She does not say what years she was employed as an undercover...whatever. She claims to have worked in Compton at one point. Could you verify for me if any of this is true?

Luke: I assume Jacy is telling the truth that her father was a cop. If so, her story is plausible but still weak. What years did she work as an "undercover internal affairs officer" as the story says? Vito Anthony's story on Xfanz says she was promoted. Promoted to what? The 33-year vet she busted: His name? What happened to him? Fired? Reprimanded? When did this happen?
She says she "observed" cops stealing money from drug dealers. Did she report these cases to her supervisor? Were these cops busted? Exactly how many cops did Jacy witness ripping off drug dealers or planting drugs on innocent victims? As in 2, 5, 13, not "a lot" or "quite a few." Cops write down EVERYTHING that takes place on police reports. Well, granted, a cop wouldn't write down he rolled a meth dealer and kept the money and meth, but she would be obliged to do so to back up her assertions. Can she supply a paper trail or direct us to the paper trail with names, dates and where the incidents took place?
The story later says she was "offered work as an undercover operative." An OPERATIVE is not the same as an OFFICER. Which was she? It sounds to me like she is not claiming she was a cop, went to cop school, etc. It sounds more like she was a Confidential Informant, a role usually played out by small time dealers to snitch up the chain. But I suppose one could be a CI without having been convicted of a crime. Daddy's girl would seem like a good candidate.
Lastly, is it credible the LA County Sheriff's Department would hire a beautiful girl and send her into COMPTON? I want to believe Jacy is telling the truth, but I'd need to see some solid facts and Vito Anthony did not supply them. (Note to Vito: I'm NOT saying Jacy is lying, but your story is hard to believe. Why don't you give it another go and supply some old-fashioned journalism? In addition to answering the above questions, some on the record testimony from the police she worked for would convince me.)

Luke, even though I'm on deadline and have a load of things on my plate I really have to disagree with you on the Health Insurance issue. I am 58 with type 2 diabetes, also I'm to short for my weight. I've been type 2 for over 10 years. Almost all the heath insurers put me in a high risk category which means my insurance would run about $850 to $1200 a month. With my other expenses, called living, I can't afford to be insured.
