(Dec. 15) — Doctors in Germany report they have cured an HIV-positive American of the AIDS virus after performing a stem cell transplant to treat his leukemia.
But experts caution that while the man’s outcome seems promising, the risky procedure might not work on otherwise healthy people with HIV and probably won’t yield an overall cure for AIDS. Still, if the patient’s HIV doesn’t resurface, this would mark the first time HIV has been wiped out in any patient.
In 2007, Timothy Ray Brown received a stem cell transplant to treat his leukemia, a cancer of the blood. The procedure involves destroying a patient’s natural immune system with chemotherapy and radiation, then boosting it back up by inserting bone marrow or blood stem cells from a healthy donor.
Brown’s donor was not only a perfect match for his blood and bone marrow type but also happened to have a rare, inherited genetic mutation that makes carriers virtually immune to HIV. The donor’s cells took root in Brown’s body and multiplied. Three years later, Brown’s leukemia is in remission, and he’s also HIV-negative.
The German doctors’ findings were published last week in Blood, the journal of the American Society of Hematology. "Our results strongly suggest that cure of HIV has been achieved in this patient," they wrote.
Other experts warn that HIV could still be present — but dormant and undetectable — in the patient’s blood.
"’Cured’ is a strong word. But this is very encouraging," Dr. David Scadden, co-director of the Harvard University Stem Cell Institute, told The Miami Herald. "From all indications, there was no residual virus. It’s as good an outcome as one could hope."
But Jerome Zack, an HIV researcher at the University of California at Los Angeles, told MSNBC that "you can’t eliminate the potential for there still being low-level virus in the body that’s undetectable."
There’s also a problem with replicating the same procedure in otherwise healthy patients who are HIV-positive but don’t have leukemia. Plus, the genetic mutation found in Brown’s donor, which makes patients resistant to HIV, is extremely rare.
"This probably is a cure, but it comes at a bit of a price," Dr. Michael Saag, professor of medicine and director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham AIDS Center, told CNN.
"For him to receive the donor cells, his body had to have all of his immune system wiped out" and then receive a bone marrow transplant, Saag said. "The catch-22 here is that the best candidates for a cure, ideally, are people who are healthy" and don’t have leukemia, he said.
Stem cell transplants are very risky because they wipe out the patient’s immune system to the point where they could die without an insertion of healthy donor cells. That process is "very hazardous," Saag said. "Even if somebody doesn’t die from a transplant, there are complications that make it very unpleasant for people to live with."
The CDC currently has 29 old diseases suspiciously known as AIDS diseases, including VD, TB, KS, pneumonia, cervical cancer, candidiasis, herpes, hepatitus, dementia, diarrhea… Huh? WTF?… Why don’t they just add heart disease and cancer to the list so the big pharm can just perscribe its poison drugs to everyone any time any one gets sick. You certainly can’t deny chemical drugs being a good wall street stock investment (Greed is not only good, apparently, its GOD!).
Someone explain to me how a virus relates to cancer? This was the failed hypothesis abandoned prior to AIDS after billions of dollars in research. What about candidiasis, which is caused by an overgrowth of yeast (a highly acidic diet)? What does yeast have to do with a virus? Please somebody liberate me from my ignorance!

HIV discoverer Luc Montagnier MD admits in this video that HIV can be cured within a few weeks with clean water and good nutrition. In the same video, he admits that drug companies push drugs and vaccines because there’s no profit in food and water.
So why would hospitals push costly and dangerous surgical procedures when a patient can simply improve his diet?
Clark, if tests dont detect HIV, how does someone know they need to improve their diet to rid themselves of the virus?

Some idiot is throwing red herrings, again. Montagnier sued Gallo for misappropriation/stealing after Gallo said, so to speak “I won. I got the answer. Now I’ll be rich, if I’m lucky and if this time finally the NIH will buy my hypothesis… for a change”. Assuming HIV exists, as Montagnier has gone along with Gallo about it, as he gets 1/2 of the test kit profits, he still says it can be cured with a couple of weeks.

In spite of making money off the mainstream p.o.v., Montagnier still said what he said. At a 1990 AIDS conference in San Francisco he also said “HIV might be harmless.”
Montagnier: We can be exposed to HIV many times without being chronically infected… our immune system will get rid of the virus within a few weeks if you have a good immune system.
Brent Leung: If you have a good immune system then your body can naturally get rid of HIV?
Montagnier: Yes.
Brent Leung: If you take a poor African who’s been infected and you build up her immune system is it also possible for them to also naturally get rid of it?
Montagnier: I would think so… It’s important knowledge, which is completely neglected. People always think of drugs and vaccine.

I was asked a couple of months ago if I wanted to write a blog for a political website. I was like ABSOLUTELY. But I researched the blog and they’re a right-wing conservative Republican blog. I asked the man if he knew I wrote about porn. He said he knew and how he wanted different view points on his website. I researched more but I eventually turned it down. My biggest fear was being edited and someone there making me look bad. I make myself look bad everyday and I don’t need help with it!! But I figured how could a quasi-feminist, moderate Democrat, porn blogger end up writing for a right-wing conservative Republican blog? So I turned it down. You should have done more research instead of jumping in just because you two agree with one issue.
Again, this is not the first time I’ve asked this question and it surely won’t be the last, but what’s wrong with you, Darrah? I have no idea what you’re talking about or why you’re quoting Joe. If HIV has been isolated why are tests for anything but HIV and why do different labs, and even different clinicians within the same lab have completely different criteria regarding what constitutes being deemed “HIV+”?
