It’s 8.30 on a Monday morning and I am in the middle of editing out a piece of footage from an adult film in which a girl-next-door type squirts out 3 huge loads of cum from her ass into a martini glass before drinking it. It’s mornings like these that I struggle to keep my coffee down and am also aware that maybe my job isn’t as glamorous as I think.

I am a porn editor from New Zealand.

Before you ask, no the porn industry in New Zealand is not massive and thriving. My job basically involves making cuts to porn filmed elsewhere, as instructed by the country’s censorship office, before it is able to be sold in adult stores throughout New Zealand.

So you want to know what I have to censor, right? That seems to be the million dollar question. The answer? LOTS. In my time in New Zealand, I’ve found it to be a pretty liberal country. The gays can get hitched via civil unions. Prostitution is legal. But when it comes to what is allowed to be shown in porn, NZ is huge whimpering conservative baby. The excisions I have to make to a film obviously depend on which censor is marking the film on the day as what I cut can dramatically vary from censor to censor. Generally though, I find most of my cuts involve gaping, fisting, squirting, cream pies, bukkake, rough face fucking, too many guys on one girl, close ups on orifices dripping jizz, golden showers, a lot of BDSM genre porn and obviously scat. Basically, I get to see what the rest of New Zealand doesn’t. THE PERVERT IN ME IS NOT COMPLAINING.

I love my job but I loathe censoring porn. It’s sometimes difficult to make the cuts I am told to as 95% of the time I disagree with the decision. The reasoning behind making certain cuts is usually lame and generally is just the sentence ‘because it’s degrading to women’ reworded differently every time. I would like to know how a male censor knows what is degrading to all women? Poorly researched blanket statements about what is ‘obscene’ can eat my fucking cunt.

When I tell people what I do, I usually get one of two reactions. Obviously the first is the overexcited, ‘OH MY GOD. WHAT A COOL JOB. TELL ME EVERYTHING’ reaction and the second, which is sometimes funner, is the one in which the persons face immediately drains of colour and you can tell that they wish they’d never asked.

Obviously, there are a LOT of positives to my job. Hell, I get to stare at boobs all day and vicariously live through people by watching them fuck on my computer screen. The negatives are that working in this industry has made me so desensitised to what is appropriate dinner talk and the other thing about the job that is shit is coming to work hungover and unable to stomach breakfast but having to edit rough gagging.

And before you ask, NO I DON’T GET JERK OFF BREAKS INSTEAD OF SMOKING BREAKS!
