I write this today with a full schedule of shoots so maybe I am lucky or just happen to hit a wave at a busy time. I got to LA on
the 18th and have had a shoot every day since. It’s the 25th today by the way 🙂
I am hearing that girls are shooting boy girl scenes for $600 and $700 and some even less. That is crazy but I guess when it’s your
job you either shoot it or you don’t get paid.
The business is shrinking. We all see that I think. The amount of free porn out there is overwhelming and growing daily. The sites
that did the cross sales and ripped off subscribers didn’t help any either. No one wants to be billed for additional site
memberships they weren’t aware of because some scumbag webmaster had those little boxes checked by default on the signup forum. Now
on top of a plethora of free porn subscribers are as weary now as they were in the infancy of the internet when credit card security
was the biggest obstacle to overcome when trying to make a sale.
DVD sales are down to an all time low and companies that have been around for years are going out of business just as fast as
start-ups.
So what are we, the people in the business, going to do about it? Are we going to try and ride it out and hope it comes back around
with new technology? Will the internet being on your 60 inch flat screen instead of your 20 inch monitor make people reach for their
credit cards again? It is going to be an interesting next few years in this business that’s for sure.
We have a white house with a former first amendment attorney in the US Attorney’s office and a liberal guy at the wheel. Will that
help porn by lifting some of the clamps put in place by the previous 8 years of bible thumping idiots?
In my opinion porn needs some oppression for it to thrive. It is so available in Europe yet the sales per-capita there are far
below our consumption. But then again so are rape and child molestation. Will porn still be interesting if it’s widely
available without restrictions? Will we need to go super kink like the Europeans are known for? Will girls be expected to be peed on
or pee on someone in every scene or worse?
I am going to keep doing as I have been because it seems to be working for me but I’m seeing all these people that just seem
desperate. Dropping membership fees $10 a month? That has been proven to do nothing for sales. I actually had an increase in
sales when I raised my monthly fee from $24.81 to $29.79. I think that it is such an impulse purchase that it doesn’t matter what
the cost is within reason. They see something that flips a switch within them and they have to see more. Simple explanation. If they
haven’t found free porn sites yet then they are a possible sale. Once they have found the sites with 50,000 full length videos for
free, they more than likely will never even see your site anyway. I read it on forums all the time. People say they will never pay
for porn again.
I am not typical in this business as I have a habit of voicing an opinion about the way things are. Most girls just fuck and bitch
about it later. I also run my own site and do my own marketing for the most part so I wear both hats so to speak. My business has
only had one month in the last 18 where I made less than the month before and I am very thankful but I have to think that my day is
coming.
The one who will suffer the most from free porn will not be me though…it will be the customer who won’t get quality porn
anymore. It will be in shitty flash video streaming that gets grainy when there is hard pounding before the pop.

when I first started shooting back in January of 1998 girls were making on average $800 for a regular boy girl scene. As a new girl you get paid a lot more and I got spoiled right away by Ed Powers who didn’t want me to shoot for anyone else. He wanted to protect me from the vultures in the industry and would hand me envelopes with $2000 or $3000 in it every week. I got greedy and went behind his back and shot for Randy West for $6000 for 3 scenes, one being a very lame anal scene and the other was a foot job and the third was just a boy girl. I saw nothing but dollar signs and left Ed and really upset him.
I was making stupid money that first year. I was shooting almost every day and some days did two scenes. I had checks in my purse for a week that I didn’t even think to cash for thousands of dollars. I was 18 a single mom and had crazy money. I blew it and I have told that story before. But the money was so easy and there were girls in Jim South’s office every day ready to work and they all pretty much got jobs! Mariah(or Monica, Ruby) I have a few question related to earning money in the porn business for ya:
1. Why is it that girls charge more for b/g than g/g even though vast majority of porn girls appear to prefer guys in their private lives?
2. How do “go-sees” work?
3. Sometimes a girl who doesn’t appear to be available for certain act (like anal) on her agent’s website do it anyway. How do producers get the girls to do stuff they normally don’t do for them? Do they generally approach the girls/agents with their offers or are the girls the ones who decide that they will do anal but only if someone pays say 3k.
4. How do girls earn money from their sites when affiliates take as much as 50 % of the sign up price and good webmasters are not cheap either?
5. Do companies pay the girls more to shoot outside LA or just provide transport and accommodation for them?
It seems like there are two types of paths of pornstars:
1)Diamond Foxxx prostitute first, now major pornstar always working at tons of websites and scenes for content for DVD’s. She seems to have put her other career on hold at the moment.
2)Teri Weigel was a pornstar first, now basically a prostitute, working once in a while at websites to keep her 1.5k per hour prostitute rate up. Never shoots alot of scenes, maybe because she will only work for top dollar and is difficult to work with.
There seems to be a big group of pornstars always working – Lisa Ann, Julia Ann, Gina Lynn, Nikki Benz, Diamond Foxxx, Kylie Ireland, etc. None of these pornstars seems to be pornstar prostitutes except maybe Kylie now.
Just my 2 cents on this. I started shooting July 94 as a small guy in LA. Basically getting women from any where I could. We paid something like 100-250 for a BJ and up to 400-500 for bg and anal was up to 600. At that time the big studios where shooting where you did dialog and stills on day 1 and then sex on day two. Girls at that time maybe made 2k total I am sure some where making much more then that.
What i find interesting about todays industry is that more then ever girls are disposable. They shoot way too much. Do way too much right from the gate plus they expect way too much in pay. A couple of years ago i had a huge named girl that bitched about not having makeup, not having some one pick her up and not having a massive craft services so she could make a special order. No less I was paying her $1200. I asked the male talent if he had any other shoots that day, no came the reply. I paid him for a da rate and told him we whre going to mess with this girl and slow way down. I then called her agent and informed him also. He was like please. Dealing with most of these new girls they are premadonna’s. Basically I worked this girl till 2 am for pissing me off. Everyone on the crew made double.
I hate to sound like an asshole but many of these girls forget that they are uneducated, making an insane amount of cash per scene ( I loved the day rate back in the day) then they expect to be done in 90 minutes to 3 hours so they can go make more money.
What everyone seems to forget is that while me as a producer and director, camera man, editor and what other hat we as crew wear that day are getting paid less and less or out of work completely. Make up women are losing money. Everyone is losing money. But talent rates seem to stay the same or they did for a long time. If anything talent rates should be half what they where for bg $500 is a good amount for 3 hours. if a girl can make more then that some where else then go.
As for the escorting industry many of the ladies I know are hurting there too. maybe the top 1-5% are still doing well but even from what I know those women are not making the same.
DVD mark will be gone in the next 2-5 years. With downloads and piracy plus the way the pay system works in the industry I make more cash working for a internet company then I do working for a Vivid. I still think DP and maybe one other studio will survive and I personally dont think it will be Vivid. Vivid is in serious need of new blood and a massive amount of it. PT and others just make too much and are in reality phoning in from their couch these days.
Mariah as for why your site did not do well at $10 it’s because of perceived value of the product. Value points to people wanting the best for there dollar so we never buy the low end. We buy middle and high. Some of the reason Toyota has become the biggest auto manufacturer. The other item that most adult sites don’t cover well is SEO and SEM. Also dump your affiliate program it is just a bleeding ulcer losing you cash in reality. You can make up the difference using SEO in a few months. Plus it makes your content more exclusive. Exclusivity is the name of the game.
You might be right Mariah, however lets examine this truly thought provoking area a little more. One thing we have to do is set constants on the variables. Let’s say we’re talking about 2 separate ladies on the upper echelons of their field. Going by what you say for porn, that’s 2-3 times a week, maybe more because as you stated you worked 7 days straight. The average upper echelon escort probably only works that same amount, maybe a little more when they need something. I don’t believe a woman who can charge say 750 for one hour of work sees 10 guys in a day.
Another variable in determining whose pussy is more worn out is the dick size that’s pounding it and for how long. While many porn stars lose everything because they decided to do porn. They lose custody of their children to being disowned by their families.
You’ve been against the women who also escort when I and many others see porn and escorting as the same thing. And society looks down more on porn stars than prostitutes because what you do is in front of a camera while what prostitutes do is behind closed doors. You’re against the women who escort, the women who don’t run their own websites themselves, and the women who do drugs. Though you admitted you were a drug addict yourself before. Do you have any friends in this industry because you always come across as being very angry and judgmental. Maybe you should talk to Sunset Thomas and Sunny Lane and the other well known porn star/escorts in this industry so you can finally understand that what they do isn’t the big bad you make it out to be.
If porn stars aren’t escorting, well there’s also the Hollywood casting couch and the wealthy men they date. That’s also a form of prostitution. Are they tested for STDs? Where’s their AIM test?
Instead of tearing the other women apart, you should all be helping each other. You’re all in the same boat and should be there for one another. You’re already being targeted by the men who run this industry. Why make it easier for these men by attacking other women?

Many women get into porn at 18 to 20-years-old. Many don’t know how to run websites but might learn years later and finally take control of their careers. But there are also the porn stars who are mostly dancers and simply don’t have the time to run a website and do all the technical work. Read their Twitter pages and they’re on a plane every other day in a new city and the next week in another country. So they hire people to run the websites.
I look at many of the nominations and yes many should never be nominated. But the award isn’t named best website for a porn star who runs it herself. Unless the condom breaks, then yes condoms do prevent many STDs. STDs & pregnancies are on the rise again in young adults when it had been down for years. I don’t come across as hating girls who do drugs. I have real compassion for them. Again, as I said it’s the people allowing them to stay fucked up and keep working that I have issue with. She offered counseling to girls who were having issues with the business. That’s all gone now really. Its all on a referral basis now.

I actually think Pornstar prostitutes are more ridiculed by society then Pornstars. Pornstar’s have actually reached an acceptable level; especially with the youth of America. They work in a somewhat controlled environment. Heck some Pornstar’s have a list of who they will work with and who they won’t. Being a Pornstar is perfectly legal, being a Pornstar prostitute is currently not legal. Pornstar’s pay taxes and Pornstar prostitutes don’t [they really need to pay like everybody else].
The average person sees no real distinction between a prostitute and someone in porn, regardless of anyone’s individual opinions. A guy that would never date an active hooker is not going to date an active person in porn.
I would have to disagree with the statement that escorts aren’t looked down upon by society. DId you not see the fiasco with the New York Governor last year? There is a distinction between being a celebrity and being in the public eye or being famous. Celebrities are seen as aspirational figures regardless for the reason of the celebrity. No one aspires to be in porn. Ron Jeremy is not a celebrity regardless of how many people can recognize him, and there is no way at all he is one of the 10 most recognized people in the U.S., not even one of the most 100 or close to it.
I saw Ronnie at a Dodger game one night last year and he was sitting about 8 seats away from Jerry Seinfeld. Ron had 10 times more people approach him and ask for photos and autographs to the point that Seinfeld was laughing about it.

Celebrities can get money for endorsements. What can someone in porn endorse that doesn’t have to do with porn? Paris Hilton has nothing to do with burgers but she did a Jack in the Box or Carl’s Jr commercial.

But you forget Al, that Paris is actually an HEIRESS and not just a girl who does porn on a regular (or semi) basis. She had no financial need to be involved in porn. Having her sexual activities for all the world to see did not necessarily give her the level of fame she current has. You can say the same of Pam Anderson; who again, had a career outside of having her sex life out there for all to see.
For while Paris lacks most all and any real talent beyond breathing and walking while chewing gum, she could have been arguably just as well known minus the sex tape, assuming her TV reality show had the same amount of impact without the additional press of the sex tape.
Likewise, once she went to jail for driving without a license, she’d been in the tabloids (with spillover in the legitimate media) regardless of having a sex tape on the market. Either way, Paris would have been at the same place she is currently famewise.
Now a few companies have placed porn girls in their ads (Sketchers I believe had some print ads with Stormy/Tera and Savanna Samson and I believe American Apparel did some print ads with Sasha Grey). Obviously, many advertisers are leery of being connected to pornography — which is why you’d most likely see them attached to more youth-oriented companies/products (trendy clothing, skate/snowboarding, videogames, music, alcohol) than say a bank, major car company, or office-supplies.
The adult entertainment biz is essentially a closed world, the celebs of which are well known and indeed “celebrated” by their fans. To draw upon your very analogy, AL, you won’t see mainstream celebs advertising adult products, strip clubs, etc. I started attending the Vegas AEE when I first worked in production in the early ’90s, and went every year for over a decade. The meet-and-greet lines for stars back then were very long and fans crowded en masse to get a glimpse of the girls – it was asses and elbows!. It’s not much different today, and the same applies to Europe at XRCO and other events, or at strip clubs in the U.S. where the big feature dancers appear to SRO crowds. Celebrity is relative to its individual niche and market, and applying the criteria of mainstream Hollywood to porn is comparing apples to oranges.
