Sledge Hammer, Porn Star, Dies After Being Tasered By Police

Sometimes strength can be a weakness. That may have been the case for porn star Marland Anderson, known by many as Sledge Hammer, who was tased to the point of cardiac arrest by police. According to Anderson’s friend, the police may have been intimidated by his size and resorted to using a taser instead of other means to subdue him.
Anderson died Friday, five days after police took him to a hospital for attempting suicide, the Los Angeles Times reports. The incident began on April 8 when the police responded to a report of an attempted suicide in the Reseda area. When they arrived, Anderson’s girlfriend told the officers that Anderson had tried to hurt himself with a knife, and she had struggled with him for it.
He was then restrained to a gurney and, on the way to the hospital, broke the gurney free from a floor lock and broke a handcuff. At this point, police used a taser to restrain Anderson.
AVN quotes adult film director Stoney Curtis, who described the struggle:
When the cops arrived, Anderson’s height (6-foot-4) and bulk intimidated them, and rather than try to subdue him with the manpower available, they began shooting him with their Tasers—"excessively," according to Curtis—to the point where he suffered a heart attack and for all intents and purposes died for 10 minutes until the EMTs were able to restart his heart.
Curtis said that Anderson had massive swelling in his brain and that doctors told Anderson’s mother that it was unlikely he’d come out of the coma, XBiz reports. Doctors advised Anderson’s mother that even if he did come out of the coma, he would not regain consciousness. So on Thursday night, Anderson’s mother took her son off of life support.
Anderson had been dealing with depression, anxiety and a mild form of schizophrenia, all of which may have been made worse by his marijuana use, according to what Curtis told Luke Is Back. Anderson’s girlfriend, Alexa Cruz, wrote in an email to Luke Is Back, "This was not a domestic violence situation at all so I want to make that totally clear. This man was being tortured by his own mind and suffering from severe insomnia."
Fellow porn star Jack Lawrence tweeted about his friend’s death: “I still can’t believe that Sledge Anderson is gone. Nine years I have known him. Just THE nicest guy EVER, & so respectful 2 the women in the biz.”
Ok, so he broke the gurney and off’d the cuff, but cops never claimed he was threatening to, rushed any of them or anyone. So what was up with the tazing field day? His body was under a lot of stress not being able to sleep. Since when are cops doctors?
The original guidelines for taser use was if the suspect is threatening cops or others with a weapon. Along with cops new “rights” to r*pe and strip search, they now have the “pre-emptive” priviledge of electocuting with high volts anyone they fucking like, without warning or cause… including people suspected of not being cooperative.
What about using the “non lethal” rubber bullets Swats used to send Steve Driver over the cliff?
Taser International has admitted in a training bulletin that repeated blasts of a taser can “impair breathing and respiration”. Also, on Taser’s website it is stated that, for a subject in a state described as “excited delirium”, repeated or prolonged stuns with the Taser can contribute to “significant and potentially fatal health risks”.
The head of one U.S. regional office of Amnesty International says 80% of those on whom a Taser was used by U.S. police were unarmed.

Critics argue that TASERs as well as other high-voltage stun devices can cause cardiac arrhythmia in susceptible subjects, possibly leading to heart attack or death in minutes by ventricular fibrillation, which leads to cardiac arrest and—if not treated immediately—to sudden death. People susceptible to this outcome are sometimes healthy and unaware of their susceptibility.[citation needed]
Although the medical conditions or use of illegal drugs among some of the casualties may have been the proximate cause of death, the electric shock of the TASER can significantly heighten such risk for subjects in an at-risk category.
This suggests that TASERs and other electroshock weapons would be dangerous to use on people with certain medical conditions and yet, since police officers will typically not know about a person’s medical history or possible drug use, this entails a risk of death with virtually any suspect.
Smoking pot when you are a little paranoid (and possibly schizophrenic) is not a wise move either. It only amplifies the paranoia.
Pot has been known to increase the risk of developing depression and schizophrenia.

Yeah, but the bottom line is Sledge could not fall asleep. If you can’t fall asleep after three days you start going crazy, hearing voices, etc. If pot had no effect on his insomnia, then I wouldn’t factor it in, in regards to this tragedy.
