Mariah Milano on Porn Stars Escorting, A Double Standard

OP/ED by Mariah Milano

With the recent HIV scares and the big controversy over cross over talent there is one subject that seems to be constantly ignored that is a very serious double standard.

Porn stars escorting. I have been over this before and taken quite a beating for speaking out but I don’t fucking care. It needs to be said. If a girl goes and fucks some random guy in a hotel room and then continues to show up to sets to shoot how is that not being addressed as high risk for the rest of the industry? If a girl gets her test on August 20 and fucks strangers in hotel rooms and does movies until September 19 when she tests again how is that not a very serious concern for OSHA and all the people screaming about the recent HIV crisis? It’s almost as if it isn’t really happening.

The reality is there are very few "Porn Stars" anymore. The huge majority are escorts who shoot some movies on the side to keep their per hourrates high. And please try and tell me that these girls who are being flown to Dubai for weekends for $50,000 are using condoms and tests are being provided by sheiks and princes!

That is enough to make me choke with laughter. It’s a very well-known fact that young boys are considered a delicacy in the Arab world and if theyare passed around into the mix with American Porn Stars where is OSHA and all the other harpies on this issue?

I think that the girls who escort should have to be regulated by the industry and that the few of us who actually earn our money by not fucking strangers in hotel rooms she be made aware of who is escorting and who isn’t and when their last test was. Of course this isn’t going to happen because that would be a massive undertaking and would require an organization that would have to be independent and have no bias to the industry or those in it and we all know that will never happen.

So we can all point fingers at the gay side of the industry which I totally agree is fucked up and very scary, but so many with a platform to actually make awareness on this issue are being silent? Why? I agree that studies show that HIV is very hard to pass from a woman to a man, but herpes or a list of other STD’s aren’t and it’s proven that people with STD’s are much more susceptible to HIV and blood-born virus’ than those without it.

I will be called a hypocrite and told that fucking on camera is no different than fucking strangers in hotel rooms and all of that but I don’t care. I don’t care if a girl is a whore or not, privately or publicly. I care that they are doing it with strangers and then showing up to set the following day without a test in between and putting my health at risk and the health of everyone else and no one who counts and can do something about it is saying a fucking word.

Condoms should be used for sex outside the industry.. whether it’s escorting or not..
And you are referring to 99% of the industry.
It is the girls/guys who fuck strangers in hotel rooms BAREBACK that make it risky for the rest of us.
    -my $0.02

  2. Mariah’s right on this one – however as long as nearly every porn studio and distributor continually bows down to and supports agencies like Type9, La Direct models, and ATMLA who all seem to have a heavy affiliations with escort agencies such as TheLuxuryCompanion.com – there will always be heavy STD risks in the general porn populace.

In reality the real cash cow for the LA porn market seems to be via escorting / privates. Until there are more women in porn who make the extra effort like Mariah things will not change.

  3. I agree with what Mariah is saying it is a very serious health risk in what a lot of these girls are doing. Not only for themselves but for all the girls who choose not to escort. As far as regulating it though i really just don’t see how it can be done. The only thing everyone could hope for is that everyone is practicing safe sex and using protection.

  4. chichiladouche says:

Mariah it sounds like you are in the minority as far as non escorting goes. It sounds like it would be a huge undertaking to do what you are requesting. I think it’s a good idea though, but it requires some kind of responsibility which regrettably is lacking with a lot of people in the industry.

You know I wonder how many of the female talent would have rejected if they knew their scene partners were escorting on the side, male or female?

Kink.com seems to use quite a few gay men and escorts in their scenes.

Nika Niore did a scene with a established gay performer named Josh West.

    http://tinyurl.com/3fqsv39

Josh West has a active rentboy profile as a escort/prostitute.

    http://tinyurl.com/422uwmn

January Searph did a scene with a gay performer named Adam Russo.

    http://tinyurl.com/3ep6k5a

Like Josh West, he is also a active gay male escort/prostitute.

    http://tinyurl.com/3kqwyq7

Nika works in the mainstream part of the industry as well. So it makes you wonder would either model have worked with these guys if they knew they were hooking for other men? If it became known, would their agent allow them to work for Kink.com again? Would their agents or other agents advise other talent not to work with these girls for a certain period of time.

I doubt most girls would work with either one of these men, clean test or not if they had the full knowledge. Look at the reaction of Lizz Tayler and Diamond Foxxx when they learned their scene partner was not only a crossover but had shot a gay scene a day before and was hustling on rentboy.

Frankly, if I was an agent I don’t know if I would want to book any of my straight talent, male or female with a company like Kink. The male/male escort industry has the same barebacking issues that female talent does.

  5. commonsense says:

Mariah is right on point. The escorting of the industry must be policed. Do any of you out there realize the window period. These His tests are completely useless when performers get it done and then escort or do risky behavior. Again based on my experience a lot of the porn talent is immature, impulsive, money seeking, emotionally disturbed and does not show responsibility:
Most people will develop detectable antibodies within 2 to 8 weeks (the average is 25 days). Even so, there is a chance that some individuals will take longer to develop detectable antibodies. Therefore, if the initial negative HIV test was conducted within the first 3 months after possible exposure, repeat testing should be considered >3 months after the exposure occurred to account for the possibility of a false-negative result. Ninety-seven percent of persons will develop antibodies in the first 3 months following the time of their infection. In very rare cases, it can take up to 6 months to develop antibodies to HIV.

Another type of test is an RNA test, which detects the HIV virus directly. The time between HIV infection and RNA detection is 9–11 days. These tests, which are more costly and used less often than antibody tests, are used in some parts of the United States.

There is also the P24 antigen test as well.
For will ryder to state he does not care what the talent does off his set as long as they show up and are responsible for work is obscene.

  6. chichiladouche says:

    commonsense-

The six month window for HIV antibodies is only applied for a VERY SMALL part of the population which would include the following-

-A active IV drug user who or one that has recently become clean. Not so much because of the using the needle but because long term IV drug abuse wrecks havoc on the immune system.

-Recent or current cancer patients that used chemotherapy as part of their treatment.

-Recent organ transplant recipients who are taking anti rejection drugs.

All of these things wreck havoc on the immune system which is why the 6 month window is applicable to that part of the population.

  7. jeremysteele11 says:

Personally, I don’t care if porn stars escort, with a condom or not. I’m not worrying about what any other performer does off a set, whether it’s with a condom or not, or whether it’s for money or not. If a performer does not have visible symptoms of something, they’re probably good to go. And if not, then we need to use oral herpes as a gold standard, in my opinion.

If we applied the same exact standard to oral herpes as we did to genital then we woudn’t say any STDs are “for life” (except in rare cases of immune suppressed individuals). Instead, we’d recognize that everyone has caught something, whether they admit it or not, and that the body’s immune system (with the help of anti-biotics or natural products- lysine for herpes, for example) eradicates it (that’s what visible symptoms are; the body’s process of getting rid of it).

90% of the human population supposedly “has” oral herpes. But it’s not an issue. You don’t see people everywhere with symptoms. Every human body has viruses, etc. in it. It’s those that do a lot of drugs and constant immuno-suppressive behavior who are the breeding grounds for opportunisitic infections and diseases.

Social stigmas have been created by religious and big pharm-influenced interests (that are affecting our minds on this issue right now), which want to scare us into having less non-monogamous sex.
They erroneously called STIs STDs (a disease is something that does not go away and ravages the body, whereas infections are treated, the symptoms go away and we’re fine). Remember that chicken pox is a form of herpes so any one who got that as a kid by standard language “HAS” chicken pox. But this way of looking at things is pure nonsense.

The worst thing I’ve ever seen and experienced were those staph infections. Everyone was getting them several years ago. Eventually they went away, but not for a while. But now, it seems everyone is more or less ok, on that. Because it was called an “infection” and not a disease or STD, it has a different horror-value perscribed to it.

  8. jeremysteele11 says:

whoops, 2nd paragraph should read :”If we applied the same standard to genital herpes as we do to oral…”

  9. jeremysteele11 says:

Furthermore, if we worry about porn stars who escort then we’re ALL fucked. What % of porn stars would you estimate DON’T escort?

The ones we should be concerned with the most are ADDICTS. Too much recreational drugs crash the immune system where opportunistic viruses breed. But if you look at the numbers, chances are we already have something (look at the numbers).

A famous retrovirologist once said that the virus, bacteria or germ is NOTHING, and the host it lives in is EVERYTHING!!!

  10. Michael Whiteacre says:

Guys, we really need to settle on one stereotype and stick to it. Either porn stars are reckless, disease-ridden, drug-infested Typhoid Marys who spread disease to people throughout LA County and beyond, or the outside world is chock full of drugs and disease and porn stars are particularly susceptible because of rampant reckless escorting.

Jeremy is correct about artificial social stigmas. Let me add that, according to the CDC, upwards of 50% of sexually active people will contract HPV during their lifetime.

The real problem with escorting is that it remains illegal. Were prostitution legalized, it could be regulated, and sex workers would face less stigma and be able to access better health care.

The problem with public health in LA County and beyond (in this country) is that our public health officials are unwilling to do any more the say the right things to the press. In LA, we’ve had hospitals taken over by the federal government because patients were bleeding out in the hallways. Hospitals dump indigent patients on the street. No one at County Health said a word about the recent staph epidemic until it hit the news.

And according to the CDC, there are 16,000 + people waling around LA with HIV who do not know it.

These are DEEP systemic problems. A group of adult performer escorts having condom-less sex — like most people in the world do — constitutes a convenient red herring for the Dr. Peter Kerndts and Michael Weinsteins of this world.

  11. jeremysteele11 says:

Tell ’em, Michael. What the fuck difference would it make anyway, if someone fucks lots of people for no money, without condoms, versus someone who escorts on a daily and nightly basis with condoms?

Ok, so if you’re a STUD, we should all beware… After all.. the word “stud” also has the letters “S”,”T”, “D” in it!

I think what Will Ryder was saying is along the lines of what both Whiteacre and I are saying.

  12. Michael Whiteacre says:

Now, that said, I don’t think that having reckless sex with ANYONE without considering that person’s health is a good idea. Condoms or not, and whether it’s an escort situation or just private citizens. People have to use their judgment. I also think that the risk of HIV is not the greatest sexually transmitted health risk facing people today — particularly among those who do not use IV drugs, and especially in the heterosexual non IV-drug using community.

Jeremy asks rhetorically, “What difference would it make anyway, if someone fucks lots of people for no money, without condoms, versus someone who escorts on a daily and nightly basis with condoms?” There’s a LOT of unprotected sex going on in our society, and there’s also a LOT of risks that are not (or barely) mitigated by condom use.

I’ve spoken with male escorts who say they KNOW they’ve been with men who were “sick” but they managed to never contract ANYTHING because they were smart about how they approached sex. Many, many escorts (male and female) have told me, for example, that they credit not flossing before giving head with keeping them safe.

Considering all the above, I think the bareback escort thing is a side issue, and a convenient red herring in terns of the BIG questions in society, and among sex workers, including adult performers.

@commonsense – The PCR-RNA test is, as I understand it (and someone can correct me if I’m mistaken) the FDA-approved test for purposes of primary diagnosis, and/or in cases of new/acute infection. If, G-d forbid, I ever needed to reconcile conflicting test results, that’s the one I’d use.

  13. commonsense says:

    @mike: correct.

Lets keep this on escorting. porn talent should be forbidden from it, and risky behavior. Jeremy your ignorance is scary in 2011. Just because someone does not physically exhibit any signs and symptoms of HIV infection does not mean they are not infected.
Magic johnson has always looked healthy to me.
maybe we should do away with the tests, and just let layman or porn actors like yourself with a high education determine who is HIV positive or not.

  14. commonsense says:

@mike. I mentioned the RNA test above.
remember we are dealing with a window of time here.

  15. Michael Whiteacre says:

@commonsense – Yes, I directed the PCR-RNA comment at you because you mentioned it.

As for adult talent being “forbidden” from “risky behavior”, I think that you’re mistaken to consider escorting any more risky than any other off-set behavior. It goes back to the fallacies I (and Jeremy) cited above. Adding the exchange of cash to a sexual encounter does not make it more “risky.” Not to mention, such a ban would be absolutely unenforceable. It might curb some activity, but most of it would simply be driven farther “under the radar.” The market always trumps regulation — as those who seek to regulate porn out of existence are sure to find out.

I’d personally feel that a lot more had been done to protect adult performers as a class if the gay side of the industry began universal testing, and if adult performers tested at labs that had established protocols for events such as the one we just saw.

  16. jeremysteele11 says:

“Commonsense”, you are ignorant of what I am ignorant of. I never stated that a person is not “infected” if they don’t have outward symptoms. I said they likely aren’t. But I also said that most have something anyway and it is not an “STD” unless it doesn’t go away. We’ve been brainwashed by double standards: 90% “HAVE” oral herpes and no ones has outlawed kissing. Then again, why should they? Likewise, stop tripping about STIs or who’s escorting. Have you ever gotten sick in any other way other than sexually? Most get better. It comes down to how bad a person’s immune system is, mainly whether it’s been compromised by drugs, etc.

If someone says “I have a video of john shooting bill in the face with a 44 magnum”, are you gonna be the dumbest turd on the face of the Earth and say “I don’t believe it” and never examine the video?

Likewise, why don’t you examine the documentary “House of Numbers” in regards to the joke called “HIV testing” and THEN get back to me?

  17. commonsense says:

First off you can fobid talent to take part in criminal behavior, and lets stop using the word escorting and use the word prostitution. that is what these porn talent are when they quote on quote escort. And again they scarred souls.

  18. commonsense says:

First off you can fobid talent to take part in criminal behavior, and lets stop using the word escorting and use the word prostitution. that is what these porn talent are when they quote on quote escort. And again they scarred souls.

  20. Michael Whiteacre says:

I’ll use whatever words I like, thank you, and a prohibition without enforceability is just masturbation.

Their “souls”, scarred or unblemished, are none of our affair, and the consideration of such intangible, spiritual and eschatological concerns has no place in a public policy debate.

  21. There are no “certainty” in life and I can’t say that all escorts or providers use condoms with all of their clients, but that being said escorts are generally safer than civilians girls believe it or not, because most responsible escorts 99 percent of the time always use condoms…civilians girls don’t always use condoms when they meet that hot guy at the club there about to fuck, get my drift?

In the hobbyist community, barebacking is frowned upon. Yea there paying for sex, but reasonable safety(i.e condom use) is still number one on their list before the fun start. Again, all normal, level-headed, respectful men who partake with escorts knows the risk involved and always practice safe sex first.

Like everything else in life there is risk involved in everything you do. When you choose to have sex, condom or not, your taking a risk with your health and your life, just like when you get into a car and drive each day, you “could be killed in an accident”. It same principle.

Unless you choose to live in an actual “bubble” all your life and never leave the safety of your home your taking a risk with your life…regardless whether you realize this or not.

This relates to female escorts, NOT male escorts or male talent who do gay sex! Just making that clear.

  22. jeremysteele11 says:

I guess the saddest part of this whole op/ed for most people is that, evidently, Mariah isn’t available for private sessions.

What is some rich Sharif offered ya whole lotta dough to… you know?

  23. jeremysteele11 says:

    what if whoops

  24. tammyfoxxx says:

This all comes down to control. As a performer, there is a lot I cannot control. I cannot control whether or not the people I work with are escorting or within the window period for testing.

But CONDOMS give me control, protect me from HIV, and greatly reduce my risk for sexually transmitted infections. They are recognized has the most effective way to protect the health of talent (just ask any doctor).

Its time the industry starts thinking about protecting talent and stop simply extracting value from talent. Performers are a resource than needs to be protected and cherished!

  25. Well, yes, most, if not all, porn girls escort.

But don’t forget that there is also the people IN porn who are not being tested, and yet they fuck these girls left and right without any protection – and that’s several well-known big-studio directors.

We all know who they are!

  26. jeremysteele11 says:

Are they any Escort News sites? Perhaps there’s a Mariah Milano-like prostitute who complains about escorts who do porn!

  27. Michael Whiteacre says:

The mysterious (and delusional) Tammy Foxxx spins the AHF line, with a twist of Pink Cross thrown in (you’re not fooling anyone “Tammy”):

“CONDOMS give me control, protect me from HIV, and greatly reduce my risk for sexually transmitted infections. They are recognized has the most effective way to protect the health of talent (just ask any doctor).”

This is idiocy. Ask the gay talent pool if condoms “protect” them from HIV? Better yet, read the warnings on the box and wrappers, and read what the CDC and NIH say.

Read about condom failure (breakage/slippage) rates, which are estimated at 15% (and thought to be even higher in adult production).

    Control is an illusion, babe.

  28. jeremysteele11 says:

Imagine if they started saying “The flu is for life”, we’d all be wearing condoms on our heads!

  29. jeremysteele11 says:

Can you provide the 15% source, MW? I’ve actually come across that myself somewhere but it’d be a pain in the ass for me to dig it up.

  30. Michael Whiteacre says:

    Touchy touchy, “Tammy”.

Never short on the insults for a Lubbenite, that’s correct. You are all beneath contempt.

You cite the W.H.O. This is not the Third World, “Tammy.” We’re not talking about bush medicine. We’re talking about a specific community — an insular, highly-tested, societal sub-set.

Go peddle your swill somewhere else — we’re not buying.

  31. tammyfoxxx says:

Michael you do make a lot of noise! Must be a defensive mechanism….something from childhood.

Lets get some things straight: I’m very much pro-porn and pro-worker.

The WHO isn’t “bush” medicine and if you think so then maybe you should remain a pundit and leave the science to more reasonable minds.

  32. Michael Whiteacre says:

I’m laughing at you, Tammy. I absolutely love you trolls. You crack me up.

So let’s get this straight, you prefer a system that fails 15% of the time or more and which, even if combined with testing, might lead to increased susceptibility to infection (due to abrasion, etc…). And you say you support porn and performers.

    What a great plan!

Then you use the Lubben line “Performers are a resource than needs to be protected and cherished!”

Did you ever have a real job, “Tammy”? Did the person who paid for your work “cherish” you? LOL

How many scenes have you done, “Tammy”, and where may I find them?

You also say I should leave the science to more reasonable minds. I have a doctorate, “Tammy”. What is your level of education, and could you verify that, please?

  33. jeremysteele11 says:

Between 3,000 to 49,000 people die per year from the flu. What should we do, walk around with masks? Demand Whinestein to protect us? I read an estimate of about 15,000 die per year from AIDS, but this is dubious, once you examine the dubiousness of HIV tests themselves, and how AIDS medicine also causes death.

STDs are not for life (unless you believe in HIV/AIDS). In fact they’re not even STDs. They’re STIs (infections). If chicken pox never went away you’d have it for life. If you’d ever had chicken pox you still have the virus for chicken pox, but so what? That’s why God/Nature gave us an immune system, which has existed a lot long than the Big Pharm. We don’t need protection pushed on us. We don’t need to try to police other peoples sexual behavior, whether or not they fuck others for money or not. The biggest problem I think we have is overpopulation is a ever-worsening, ever more corrupt, evil and exploitative world.

  34. RickMadrid says:

Very Good Article Mariah! So tell us how guys do YOU work with that are crossovers and show up to perform with you Test and all and probably have had 10-20 Gay for pay shoots and working in the straight side?

  35. jeremysteele11 says:

Thanks for sharing, Michael. I remember when the Italian journalist video interviewed me for the newspaper La Repubblica and I mentioned condom failure has been estimated to be at least 8%, he thought I was crazy. See video where I mention this about one minute into it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GxS0IW_8J8

The most liberal estimate of catching HIV during “unprotected” sex that I’ve read is 1 in 500.
It’s also been argued that since virus size particles are much smaller than the void holes in condeoms, it is like a hula hoop stopping a ping pong ball. And likewise, the notion that condoms protect from HIV, specifically, is as dubious, regardless of their 15% failure rate (which is monstrously greater than a 500:1 ratio).

Condoms are a dumb con. Let’s move on. STDs are STIs and aren’t for life unless you believe in the magic properties of HIV and/or you have an immune system which can’t recoup your health if you were to catch a common cold.

But money and power is based on FEAR. The Bush age has trafficked in fear and told us to always be afraid. That’s good for business but we should harken back to FDR who said the only thing we should fear is fear, itself.

  36. Michael Whiteacre says:

Here’s another article for you, from over the weekend:

    http://digitaljournal.com/article/311102

And you are 100% correct when you say that “power is based on FEAR.”

Fear is the most destructive force in the universe.

  37. max softcore says:

ha of course germy mentions Bush. Michael, I’ve read some of your stuff and for the life of me i cant figure why you’re getting sucked in by Germy and the House of Numbers tools.

  38. jeremysteele11 says:

MS. Lately alotta losers have been doing nothing but insult and attack while somehow thinking those attacks equate with victory. No, not if you don’t address any specifics, dummy. The doc reveals there is no gold standard for testing. You test in one place and are positive, the same results elsewhere will be determined to be negative. This is not a matter of fringe philosophy. This is indisputable fact. But why this means absolutely nothing to you; only you, in your dim-lit mind can answer that question. Curious George was a monkey. Sad that a monkey has more curiosity than you.

  39. RickMadrid says:

    Yes or No , Mariah??

  40. I’m still thinking about it. How can anyone who is pro-porn be Republican? Granted, there are many conservatives and libertarians–but Republicans? Republicans want to put you in jail. Seriously.

  41. i am pro-porn and a republican. I dont care what people do in the privacy of their own home.

  42. Romney as president would increase obscenity prosecutions…

  43. jeremysteele11 says:

You’d better vote for Republican Ron Paul, Travis. He’ll do what’s right for this CUNTry and turn it around to a country again worth being proud of. Plus, he’ll be sure to leave you with your right to watch porn as much as your right to worship.

  44. I love that picture, Mariah….perfect buttocks

If you were at my house I’d hide all the chairs so you would sit on my face

  45. Michael Whiteacre says:
