A federal judge in Boston, Massachusetts, has ruled that the federal ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional, because it interferes with an individual state’s right to define marriage.
The ruling gives same-sex married couples in Massachusetts the same right to federal benefits that heterosexual couples enjoy.
U.S. District Judge Joseph Tauro ruled that "as irrational prejudice plainly never constitutes a legitimate government interest," the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) violates the protection under the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution.
Tauro ruled simultaneously in favor on two separate lawsuits that were filed by the Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) on behalf of eight same-sex married couples and three widows, and by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, where same-sex marriage has been permitted for over six years.
Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley called the ruling "a victory for civil rights." Coakley, who attended court Thursday for the ruling, told reporters, "All citizens who are married in Massachusetts should be treated equally."

This likely won’t have an impact on California or even Hawaii (whose governor just vetoed a same-sex marriage bill).
However, other state governments may try to adapt their own definitions. It remains to be seen how court challenges in that regard will fare.

Good news for gay guys. Perhaps Chrissy and Seth Dick-ins can finally come out of the closet, embrace their homosexuality, go to Massachusetts, get married and live happily ever after. Hell, they can even adopt some kids and raise some proud gay children.

Yes Origen, I heard the good news. As we speak, Roman Polanski is on his way to France. Stupid Los Angeles District Attorney wasted this brilliant man’s time for nothing, and the bankrupt, corrupt, pathetic U.S. government owns Mr. Polanski a written apology. They tried to involve an innocent man in their shameless political games and cover up their own wrong doings and mishandling of a decades long case of conspiracy and extortion; and they have failed miserably. Let that be a lesson for them.
