Name another male porn star except for Ron Jeremy steadily working in mainstream? I can’t think of anyone else unless it’s a lesser known porn star. The only other porn star is Simon Rex and he still works in mainstream very well. But he only did a few solo scenes. He first got noticed as a VJ on MTV many many years ago. But they fired him soon after the news broke he was a “gay” porn “star”. It’s like near impossible for any man to get work in the mainstream unless it’s a movie about porn. The women have more luck crossing over.
Strange that the male porn stars have an easier time and are more accepted back in normal society than the women while the female porn stars are more accepted in Hollywood than the men.
Wasn’t it that Simon Rex ONLY came to some mainstream notice, when it came out (but was never substantiated) that he had starred in and filmed a second Paris Hilton sex tape (this one was allegedly a threesome — the other person never identified from what I saw in the press).
Also as far as I know of, despite being a MTV VJ for two years, he wasn’t a big part of the pop culture landscape. FYI Ms. Darrah — I doubt he was fired for having done gay porn, as again, he was at MTV for two years. They now frequently turn over VJs since they don’t have any real use for them, since the network is home to more ‘reality TV’ than ‘music videos’. MTV is a long ways from the days of Martha Quinn, Mark Goodman and Downtown Julie Brown. Now if they have videos to show, usually in the wee hours, they just show them without a ‘host’ introducing them.

Well, you can’t classify a movie like CryBaby or a TV show like Melrose Place (both of which featured Traci Lords in supporting roles) as B-quality.
She’s actually done a fair amount of decent TV work (Gilmore Girls, Nash Bridges, two seasons as a recurring character on the NBC drama Profiler).

Yes Traci has done a lot of big well known shows and movies. Everyone always brings up Cry Baby. But come on now people, she has done far more work since then. And the Gilmore Girls was a family show and they still hired her. She’s not Nicole Kidman but most aren’t either. She’s a successful working actress and makes her living from her work. You can’t say that about any other former or current porn star maybe except for Ron Jeremy who gets paid a lot in appearance fees to show up at clubs and parties. There is Savanna Samson but she makes a lot on her wine now. But mainstream, it’s Traci and edging her out is Ron Jeremy and Ginger Lynn. Ginger has said she has done more mainstream work than porn. As I mentioned earlier, I did see Ginger a year ago in one of the American Pie installments. She played Nurse Sanders in “American Pie Presents Band Camp (2005)”.
I mentioned Traci’s other roles, as I agree — she’s more mainstream that most want to give her credit for. But then, as for her porn work, you can’t really go rent it!!!
As for Ginger’s recent movies…American Pie stalled out after number 3 — but lives on in Direct-To-DVD nonsense (of which she had a small part in).
After the scandal, she started taking acting lessons and dance and vocal lessons. She said she went to every audition even after finding out she would never get them but they only wanted to meet Traci Lords. People have said her first husband is Jon Waters’ nephew. Yeah that can help a bit get an indie movie. But after they divorced and she was on her own, she was on her own and still succeeded. I don’t know though if she married him before or after Cry Baby. But Cry Baby would not give anyone a career for over 22 years. Traci has worked for her success in Hollywood. She also won the Film Discovery Jury Award in 2000 for Best Actress for her movie Chump Change. It appalls me when people say Jenna Jameson and Sasha Grey have done more in mainstream than Traci Lords.

I’ve seen her interviewed and she said no one ever forced her into porn or put a gun to her head. She said she was poor and needed the money. Yeah, pretty much everyone in porn says that. But she was underage, brought into Jim South’s studio at 14 by her stepfather, and a drug addict. Of course anyone in that situation would hate their teen years. But she did the Zack & Miri movie playing a porn star. So how much can she be distancing herself? She turned it down but read the script by her agent or manager’s urging and she loved the script and thought it was funny. That’s why she did the movie. I’ve also seen her interviewed and she was laughing saying she will always be known as a porn star and something bigger has to happen in her live for people to forget her past.

It’s my belief that she got CryBaby all on her own (abet, Waters was admittedly intrigued by a woman who had almost brought down the Adult Film Industry; which was a lot different place than it is today). Yet once she had the part, she didn’t show up to the set fucked up and with a bitchy porn chick attitude.
No she WORKED hard and kept WORKING HARD until she had some level of general respect in Hollywood. As you note Darrah she takes acting classes and isn’t sitting around waiting for Spielberg to beg her to do Transformers 3 or devising idiotic ‘reality TV’ shows for herself.
Again, I’m sure such dedication to their craft escapes the average porn person who if they showed up hours late to a porn shoot for a whole year, they’d most likely have zero repercussions beyond clowns like us talking about their shitty work habits on a blog.
So in that respect, doing a movie like CryBaby right out the gate after the scandal, HELPED her have a 22 year (and going) career in Hollywood. As if she had done even a handful of bullshit B and C list movies instead of CryBaby, she’d be a nobody whom everyone would simply know from having duped Porn Valley back in the day (and that’s all she’d have to market herself as; the girl who did porn while lying about her age).
If that was the case, she’d exhausted the talkshow circuit by now (Springer, Sally Jesse, Maurry, Tyra, et cetera) and would be on the road dancing at shitholes like Jumbos and trying to do Jim Powers latest cum-circus.
Likewise, as others have and will for sure remind everyone, Traci had a unique springboard to mainstream fame; fuck over the same industry that turned her into a cause célèbre. Was it right? Probably not, if you worked in Porn Valley when it all went down, or if you have a long memory and hold grudges against people you don’t even know.
Otherwise, it worked out pretty good and when she’s really old, she’ll write the ‘tell all’ solving the mystery once and for all of ‘who dropped the dime on Traci’ that Porn Valley has been waiting for…if only to settle old scores.
Darrah, as you pointed out, she turned the role down initially, so obviously she prejudicially didn’t want to associate with anything having to do with porno. But then her agent who wants to make money talked some sense into her. And the porn crew roles in that flick are a bit of a silly mockery of the industry, in general in case you didn’t notice, so that further suits her.
If the movie were a true and unauthorized biography of her, unlike that book of hers, I’m sure she wouldn’t approve. I’m talking about the perspective of the many who worked with her at the time…
Is there anything I regret doing when I was a teenager? No but what I regret not doing is getting paid to get laid at age 15. I could’ve been a cute little star like Traci Lords, and if I had done so I would’ve announced my revelation at almost the same exact time at 18, since we’re both the same age.
I know was a horny kid then. I also was in no ways ignorant of sexuality or reality, as society likes to suggest. I always have been offended by the term “minor” which infers that people under the age of 18 or 21 are of lesser importance, legitimacy or wisdom. I think our personalities and awareness are pretty much solidified at an early age.
