In Chapter 2, Author Chris Hedges explores the physical and psychological damage that the pornography industry wreaks on the women who pass through it and quotes Shelley Lubben, Jan Meza and Patrice Roldan, former porn actresses as well as Scott Smith, former porn addict.
He also quotes porn stars, porn industry leaders, Dr. Sharon Mitchell who runs AIM and others. It is the MOST eye-opening chapter I have ever read on pornography and has put an even BIGGER flame within me to fight against pornography and help those deceived by this filthy and abusive industry!

Although Chris’s book at times makes you feel the situation in America is hopeless, this is where I feel my call is to give people HOPE. Glancing through a copy this afternoon (it took three book stores to find, by the way), much of the verbiage of the book seemed all too familiar to me. It appears that Hedges simply took passages from Lubbens’ website, buying into her version of the industry hook line and sinker, so it is no wonder she is singing the praises of the book. In general through, his training to be a priest shined through time and again so your mileage will vary depending on just how much you want to hate porn.
Like Lubbens, he takes a handful of anecdotes and suggests they are the norm, painting with a very broad brush based on extremely limited experiences. And while I am a big believer that many in the industry don’t belong there, there are very few employment opportunities that pay nearly so well for people without any legally marketable skills or education. The basis that our society is mired in “illusion” in many ways (though strictly on a surface level) is certainly not without merit, it falls apart upon closer inspection.
The same holds true for the shtick presented by Lubbens and her followers. They find it easier to complain about the porn industry and how it worked out for them than to look inside at the epic failure of their own lives. Carefully selecting slanted experiences and suggesting that all porn sets are that way, the embellishments are as telling as the facts left hidden in the shadows. Ryan Lee Millay/Trent Roe was a petty thief with a sorted criminal history yet following the Lubbens model of life, his sins are washed away by blaming porn. Nadia Styles/Patrice was an abused teen kicked out of her home that earned six figures a year in porn but somehow everything that happened to her was the fault of the industry.
The list continues but always goes back to the fact that those served best by Lubbens are those that were very damaged goods long before they entered porn. If believing in a supernatural being makes them happy, good for them but blaming all their ills on their own poor choices as the fault of an industry that gave them more infamy/attention and money than they ever would have received otherwise is simply crazy.
And Colonel, much like we disagreed when you were supporting admitted child rapist Polanski, we will have to disagree on Lubben’s performance abilities when she was “Roxy”. While I did not see all of her performances, it’s good to see she got out of something she could not do very well to find her calling elsewhere.

General, fucking for a living, be it on camera or in private, is still not considered a great long term career path by the vast majority of people (and not just in the USA as some have claimed in their attempts to label us as “repressed”). Therefore, it is not unreasonable to expect many of those associated with the industry to come from the fringes of modern society. For unskilled, short term labor, the industry pays better than anything else these gals could have ever hoped for in most cases, many of them needing quick cash at the onset of their careers. And out of all those in the industry, the performers are the ones with the least economic risk, getting paid right away in an industry where a great many projects will never recoup their initial investment (thanks to pirates as well as declining sales).
Frankly, I doubt most people here would “run out and buy the book” being discussed too considering it is based on a hugely faulty premise and the weakest of Hedges’ churned out product of the last 7 years. Here’s a freebie in that regard:
His main contention is that modern American society is based increasingly on illusion and fantasy, the populace grasping at all sorts of things to fill their largely meaningless lives (such as porn, war, professional wrestling, TV). Okay, he might have a point except that his alternative is to worship a supernatural being, an invisible being with a whole set of “rules” to follow to stay in his good graces.
If trading one set of illusions and fantasies for another is to make sense, it should at least pay the bills lest it be considered properly labeled as “unworkable”.
Oh, and despite the claim, I don’t hate Lubbens in the slightest, I just find her preferred illusions to be less appealing and self serving. If I were religious, I would certainly find more logic in a female version of a deity (as in most “old” religions) than the fantasy/illusion presented by the majority of Christians I’ve encountered (nods to Kay).

In fact, I’ve found him to be almost as nihilistic as the Colonel is. I must admit I haven’t had the chance to read Empire of Illusion (too busy having fun with Inherent Vice). Finally, though, we have a scholarly approach to the all Consuming Spectacle of life in modern America. And a validation of many of the ideas, the French philosopher and cultural critic Guy Debord, illuminated almost 50 years ago. Let it be known the Situationist Internationale was a left-wing Anarchist (that means no government) movement, Anti-Capitalist by nature while searching for a greater vision of freedom.
I, myself, am beginning to lean toward Anarcho-Christian-Hippie-Communism as a future model for America. And by “Christian” I mean the true teachings of Jesus the teacher who walked this Earth. Not the voodoo, pie in the sky bullshit peddled by the Mega-Capitalist-Christian-Corporation. Chip, while he doesn’t take the extreme end of the argument (some of his work tears into the far right wing fundamentalism many of us abhor) his debates with Harris and Hitchens sure seemed to push his religious beliefs (I haven’t read his “I Don’t Believe in Atheists” but several clips are available by him summing it up as well).
I’m more of a “hands off” kind of guy myself, preferring less government interference in my life, lower taxes with fewer regulations, and tolerant of religion so long as it stays out of my way.
