Giana Taylor of Urban X Awards feels disrespected by Jeff Mullen

(August 3rd, 2009 Los Angeles)
Giana Taylor producer of the recent Urban X Awards, responds to the press release that Jeff Mullin director of “Not The Cosby’s XXX” sent out about being snubbed by the Urban X Awards.

“It really upsets me to read such stories such as the one released about the “Not The Cosbys XXX” not being nominated. The reason I am upset is because I put out press releases about the nomination deadlines, and I even extended them two times to give companies more time to submit movies.

For Jeff Mullin to put a negative story out such as the one he put
out is just very disrespectful to me, as the founder of Urban X  Awards, and to his
cast, to make them think that we would intentionally leave such a big movie out of
the nominations” stated Taylor.

“Just like the AVN and XBIZ Awards, “which we have high regards for”, there is a certain nomination period in which you must submit your movies to be nominated.
I want everyone to know for the record, that Jeff Mullin, had not submitted that project for nomination. We don’t like to have any negative press on an event such as this, which everyone really enjoyed, went very well, and was well received.

To the cast of “Not the Cosbys XXX”, please contact the folks responsible for submitting that movie for dropping the ball and not submitting it for nominations.

We have a lot of respect for the work that Mr. Mullin and his production company does, he attended our awards program this year, and we hope that next year he would consider submitting projects to us on time, we would be very happy to include them” added Taylor.

Ms. Taylor should re-read the press release a bit closer as it is obviously a spoof. Otherwise, if she wants to be taken seriously (and I’m aware of the many issues regarding how “credible” her awards are with most in the industry, she needs to learn how to spell Mullen’s name…

Here’s a bit from another website as to why the movie didn’t win any awards:
    1) Neither Hustler nor X-Play media sponsored the show

    2) A quick look at the winners in conjunction to who runs the show reveals where the awards go

    3) Will and Scott are white

    4) Bill Cosby is considered too “white” by many blacks (he has long been a thorn in the side of the poverty pimps in the black community)

    5) The movie came out well after the 2/28/09 deadline

Take your pick of the above, enough people of color have pointed out the politics involved in their awards surpassing that of all other industry shows, the limited number of judges, etc. Given how many award categories the production has expanded to since the first show (this was the second year), I suspect there will be more awards given to fewer people than AVN within a year’s time.

I suspect that if Hustler/X-Play becomes a full sponsor and guarantees certain talent will participate (for free) in the show next year, they will be tossed a bone or two but the big winners are probably locked in well before the nominations close if the scuttlebutt is even half accurate.

  2. Geez, I never accused the show of doing any of that. I read Giana Taylor’s words about Not the Cosbys XXX and wanted to give a quick response.

Since when was our story on Not the Cosbys XXX not winning an Urban X Award negative and disrespectful? It was a tongue-in-cheek parody-like news story so I can’t imagine why the super-beautiful Giana Taylor would be upset please re-read it. I would never disrespect a woman like that or an awards show. Now what other people blogged or commented about on other sites is not in my control but I had a wonderful time at the Urban X Awards and plan to attend next year as well.

As for Not the Cosbys XXX not winning an Urban X Award that is really not a problem at all and if they didn’t receive our DVD or my words that Thomas Ward (Cliff Huxtable) would bring the house down as a presenter at their awards show (Misty Stone AKA Denise Huxtable was on their stage) then I can understand them not putting our movie on their nomination list to consider. I know they certainly knew about Not the Cosbys XXX but if exact protocol was not followed I can totally see their point of leaving it off their nom list.

I do know however, that if I was having an award show for golfers and we hadn’t received Tiger Woods’ request for nomination consideration as Best Golfer, I would still make damn sure to put him on the nominations list. Now, I am not comparing Not the Cosbys XXX with Tiger Woods acclaim….on second thought yes as a matter of fact I am. Not the Cosbys XXX is the ‘Tiger Woods’ of porn. (That’s an LOL by the way) Now go out and buy the movie and stop downloading it for free.

Plenty of people thought the press release was serious. Why did you send something like that out if you never submitted the movie? If you did submit the movie, do you have proof that you mailed it, like a certified mail or something? You’re making a serious accusation without proof. People complain about not winning AVN Awards but they never send out press releases about it, even jokingly. It is simply not funny.

  4. freepornstarpix says:

If it was a ‘joke’, then it sounded crazy, like something Kurt Lockwood would write.

  5. MonicaFoster says:

Gianna is certainly defensive in regards to this…very interesting. I suspect she was questioned about the lack of acknowledgment by more than just bloggers/forum posters.

‘Lighten up people, Not the Cosbys XXX came out in JUNE while the awards deadline was at the end of FEBRUARY…’

    Dates count!

Why does a studio have to ‘submit’ a nomination?
That sound outdated to me. Why not the Nomination Committee make the nominations based upon actually seeing the DVD?

Right on with your right on, Jeff.

Jeez, the porn biz is gettin’ so damn testy lately. Too much worrying about HIV and various strains of the drip-drips, the AHF Inquisitionists, federal-obscenity boogiemen, Cal-OSHA and LA County Health Dept.’s evil minions, intelligence-challenged FOB-ers trying to live their dreams, and Shelly Lubben’s personal relationship with Jesus…

Let’s put the fun back in porn, people!

  9. freepornstarpix says:

Gee, Den, do you think that companies have to submit their DVDs because more than 10,000 porn movies are released each month? Ya think?

Monica, no one questioned Giana. People are lucky that she even wanted to put together a show with all the mainstream face she is experiencing.

Anyway, congrats on you and Jeff burning this bridge so she doesn’t have to deal with either of you ever again. This is bullshit and you both know it.

  10. Houstondon says:

Den, you scan through more porn in a month than most people will ever watch in their lifetimes but there are enough “ethnic” titles released on the market that I doubt very many people will have heard of if not for someone pointing it out (your outlines serving as an excellent example). I’d be more interested in knowing who was on the “nominating committee” and who voted in the awards given the shroud of secrecy and whispered comments by those who claim to “know” their awards are either sold or given freely to a select group of friends. I have no personal knowledge of that taking place but without some kind of openness regarding the awards, I can see why such rumors get started.

And in an ideal world, every voter should have seen every bit of all the nominated flicks they voted on; a process that impacted me on those award shows I participate on myself (and you know how much porn I watch).

  11. MissBiatch2U says:

10,000 movies a month are released? 333 movies a day? wow, and i heard there was no work in porn valley!

  12. freepornstarpix says:

    The majority are bad compilations.

  13. Houstondon says:

Keep in mind that they are not just compilations but all the specialty releases of niche product, most of which sell well under a thousand units before disappearing into the depths of the back catalog piles, never to be heard from again…

  14. Houstondon says:

MissBiatch2U, I’m sure she meant to say 10k a YEAR are made, a conservative number until just recently. I’d take exception to the “bad compilations” remark though; Private used to make some very good ones, New Sensations/Digital Sin make some very value oriented ones, and the Web companies make a lot of web-to-DVD titles that are really good.

  15. Harvey Dent says:

The Private Life of …., and the New Sensations “I love…..” are good compilation series.

  16. Houstondon says:

The “Private Life of…” compilations used to be a lot better but the “I Heart/Love…” stuff from NS tend to be pretty consistently decent. 😉
