Well Third Axis, in my line of work I have discovered that faith based charities are far less top heavy and far less likely o squander their resources in management than secular or worse, goverment based aid projects. Far less. For example In most goverment programs in the Third World only about 10 percent of the resources do reach the intented targets and that is true of most non faith based initiatives too.

You certaily have been not paying attention to the numbers, the fact that Western Civilization pays attention to those issues is part of the Chistian heritage. Most social issues start as Christian issues and them become secular in the Western World.

I would love to see a porn industry specific study. Studies done in other parts of the sex industry like stripping and escorting show that about 70 percent of the women do are mentally ill. I bet porn is even higher.
For the people that criticize Shelley, do any of you reach out to the girls having problems and help them too? Do you contact them in prison and try to help them throughout their pregnancies? She doesn’t help anyone unless they want the help. She doesn’t go out and kidnap people and brainwash them to leave and believe in God. For every one success story, there are hundreds or thousands of horror stories. Name any other organization that raises money to help porn stars? The only mainstream organization that usually can get enough money raised to help sex workers are Children Of The Night. Name another mainstream organization that can raise thousands or millions to help sex workers? None. So it’s hard for Shelley and the others like xxxChurch and so on to raise enough money to help the people who need the help.
Well, there are not too many organizations to help sex workers and most of them are faith based.

Dear Darrah: just yeaterday I gave my friend who also happens to be my driver a 100 dollars because he has hit hard times, due to the economic down turn. I didn’t ask why he needed it, he told me, I didn’t ask him to pay me back, although he said he would. I gave my naibor who’s daughter who was in a wheel chair and died sudenly from cancer, a 100 dollars for the funeral, and talked with him because he was crying. I had helped two of my friends who worked at a strip club. One who’s mother had died at the age of 12 and was a meth addict, I would ask her to quit and remind her she was better then that. My other friend was homless and needed a place to stay. So yes, I did and still do help all my friends, not just people in porn or members of my own family. Why? Because if everyone helped the people who asked them to, without being greedy about the giving or only thinking about themselfs or their famlies, thern there’d be a lot less missery in the world. Plus, with organizations that make it easy for people to just not help their friends or relatives. I believe that these organizations do the exact oposit of what Christs wanted which was: give from your heart and help your brothers and sisters, which meant your friends relatives and strangers if you could. I think that meant everybody, not just some speacial organization with all the responsibility of helping others. I’ve lost a friend to suicide, so now when some one says they’re hurting, I actually pay attention and listen and do trie to give emotional suport to them. Because I actually hated the fact that I told her we’d go to the beach and flacked that week, so that weekend she hit a bridge at a 100 miles an hour not wearing a seat belt. And my boss Charlie and one of the girls at the 7th Vail they went serching by calling every morg in L.A. and they found her remains. They called her parents in Russia who came and picked up the body to take her remains back to Russia. And everybody felt bad, because she was only 21 yrs old. Some but not all strip clubs really have carring compasionate people working there. I spent 2 hours once talking a customer out of going home and commiting suicide. I know there’s carring individuals in porn too, not everything is so black and white.
Donating to charities helping sex workers is not the thing to do. Children Of The Night yes because they’re kids. That’s how they can get Hollywood involved to help raise money. Roseanne Barr was a top donator and I believe gave 6-7 figures throughout the years. Traci Lords, Ginger Lynn, and other former/pornstars also help. But helping adult porn stars is not a high priority for many.

Everybody needs help. The Vietnam War—and other— veterans living on the streets of every fucking city in America need help. The clinical mental patients, also living on the streets of every fucking city in America, including those turned out way-back-when by the Reagan administration, need help. There are lots of charities for those things and millions raised for them. But for sex workers who need help, it’s very few. Children Of The Night only deals with teen prostitutes. So that’s why lots of money is raised for them and not adult sex workers/porn stars.

There are probably few agencies devoted strictly to sex workers (except maybe in SF) but that’s because the niche is too narrow to bring in a lot of funding. Shelley Lubben is not the only answer to a woman (or man) trying to leave sex work, so no need to deify her. And keep in mind that for someone who enjoys going on podcasts and websites to criticize porn, Shelley seems to enjoy getting publicity from websites like this one.

Nothing a radical feminist wacko like Melissa Farley does has much credibility with me. It’s like going to a fundamentalist Christian fanatic for information on homosexuality or abortion. Statistics are too easy to manipulate by carefully selecting the subjects and interview questions, and from what I’ve seen that’s what Farley does.
When the New Zealand government looked at prostitution reform they rejected Farley’s research because of it’s flaws. Even people who worked with her on it have denounced her findings as biased.
I’m not even arguing that she’s wrong – of course a lot of people in the sex industry are fucked up – but that doesn’t mean that the specific stats you’re citing aren’t pulled out of her ass to push her agenda.

Okay Captain Save A. Ho. Sorry, but it’s up to adults to manage their own “risk” they take when getting humped. Kendall, while studies done by Melissa are biased and that is obvious, specially her conclusion that all sex workers alike have the same risk of PTSD, her catalog of mentall illnesses in not. Also, in her book she not only publishes studies done by herself but studies done by researchers in places like Spain and Colombia were prostituion is legal and not challenged politically as in the US.
And they do reached the same conclusions, that an large number of whores are indeed mentally ill.

I didn’t see this until now. Shelley doesn’t hand out money flat out anymore. She has been burned before. Now she gives the money to specific certain things and not freely. She wants them to also better their lives but to also take responsibility now and take control of their lives without having to depend on others all the time. She also stays in contact with them throughout the years and some now also join Pink Cross and help her try to help others like how Shelley first helped them. Good for you trying to help others.
