“Treat ’em to the unglorious taste of sudden death.”

All The Love Is Gone

By The Colonel

I remember a scene from One Lonely Night, one of Mickey Spillane’s classic crime novels, in which private detective Mike Hammer is talking about members of the communist party who brutally murdered a woman in order to conceal their conspiracies. Hammer says:

‘I don’t give a damn for a human life any more, even my own. Want to hear that philosophy? It’s simple enough. Go after the big boys. Oh, don’t arrest them, don’t treat them to the dignity of the democratic process of courts and law, do the same thing to them that they’d do to you. Treat ’em to the unglorious taste of sudden death.’

Blood for blood, eye for an eye, justice done. The thing is sometimes the crime and the done damage is so dark, so deep and so destructive  that spilling the blood and taking an eye won’t  do justice, in fact nothing would; and that’s the case with Austrian  Josef Fritzl AKA dungeon dad who imprisoned, raped, tortured and dehumanized his own daughter, his own flesh and blood for almost a quarter of a century.  Statistically speaking and for whatever reason, that region of Europe is notorious for similar crimes, even though never of this depth and magnitude. Here are some old and recent examples:

Kaspar Hauser  was a mysterious foundling in 19th century Germany famous for his claim to have grown up in the total isolation of a darkened cell.  On May 26, 1828, a teenage boy appeared in the streets of Nuremberg, Germany. He would barely talk, but he carried a letter with him addressed to the captain of the 4th squadron of the 6th cavalry regiment, Captain von Wessenig. It was dated "From the Bavarian border / The place is not named/ 1828". The anonymous author said that the boy was given into his custody, as an infant, on October 7, 1812, and that he had instructed him in reading, writing, and the Christian religion but had never let him "take a single step out of my house". The letter stated that the boy would now like to be a cavalryman; thus, the captain should take him in or hang him. There was another short letter enclosed, purporting to be from his mother to his prior caretaker. This letter was found to have been written by the same hand as the other one. It stated that he was born on April 30, 1812, and that his father, a cavalryman of the 6th regiment, was dead.

Shoemaker Weickmann took the boy to the house of Captain von Wessenig, where he would only repeat, "I want to be a cavalryman, as my father was," and "Horse! Horse!" Further demands elicited only tears, or the obstinate proclamation of "Don’t know". He was taken to a police station, where he would write a name: Kaspar Hauser. He showed that he was familiar with money, could say some prayers, and read a bit, but he answered few questions, and his vocabulary appeared to be quite limited.

At first it was assumed that he had been raised like a half-wild human in forests, but during many conversations with Mayor Binder, Hauser told a different version of his past life, which he later also wrote down in more detail. According to this story, he had, for as long as he could think back, spent his life always totally alone in a darkened cell about two meters long, one meter wide, and one and a half high, with only a straw bed to sleep on and a horse carved out of wood for a toy.

He claimed that he had found bread and water next to his bed each morning. Periodically the water would taste bitter, and had been apparently drugged: drinking this would cause him to sleep more heavily than usual, and when he had awakened his straw had been changed, and his hair and nails had been cut. Hauser claimed that the first human being he ever had had contact with had been a mysterious man who had visited him not long before his release, always taking great care not to reveal his face to him. This man, Hauser told, had taught him to write his name by leading his hand. After having learned to stand and to walk he had been brought next to Nuremberg. Furthermore, the stranger allegedly had taught him to say the phrase "I want to be a cavalryman, as my father was" (in Bavarian dialect), but Hauser claimed that he had not understood what these words meant.

Even though he was under constant care and supervision, but  in the following months he got wounded several times. He was attacked, stabbed and shot by a hooded man,  most probably the same mysterious man who imprisoned him all of his life and taught him to speak and write his name. Finally, Kaspar Hauser died on December  17, 1833 from a fatal stab wound to his chest.  His life and death remains an unsolved mystery to this day.

More recently, Natascha Kampusch ,an Austrian girl was abducted and held in a secret cellar by her kidnapper Wolfgang Priklopil for more than eight years, until she escaped on August 23, 2006. Following her escape, the kidnapper committed suicide.

I can go on and give you more examples, but I believe by now you got the picture. All these crimes, all this insanity, all this fathomless pain human beings are capable of inflicting upon each other makes me think metaphorically: the bitter, cold and undisputed truth to be told, we humans are evil savages by the nature. It  doesn’t matter how we dress up and manipulate the nature and pretend to live in love and peace and harmony. In our heart of hearts, behind our warm smiles, beneath the comfort of our suburban homes  lies our true identity: indiscriminate, uncompromising, unspeakable  evil;  evil you cannot comprehend, define or justify, evil you cannot destroy. Evil that’s embedded in our nature and waits in our subconscious for the opportunity to emerge, strike and reveal to us what and who we really, truly are.

And that brings me to my ultimate question: what’s the worth of human beings, species that are capable of such evil deeds, tyranny and self destruction? Are they worthy of love, understanding and redemption, or are they doomed and beyond any salvation whatsoever?  To that, my friends, I have no answer. Maybe all my love is gone.

  1. The fathers and stepfathers of several porn whores are like that.

I have heard some stories told by some well known female talent under aliases that are blood cringing.
I was told of one that passed away each time her father dragged from bed when she was 7, to use her like a wife, while her mother looked the other way.
Or one who blacked out when her stepfather asked her to wear a bikini and come to the bath tub with him.

Luke Ford wrote in his non porn blog that Sophia Lynn father might has molested and raped her since she was 4 years old until she was 14. No wonder why she turned to be a huge train wreck.

What kind of sycho does that to his own daughter?

There are two well known porn stars by people in this blog that also has similar childhoods.

Sick. Everyone makes fun of whores, but some of them really had no chance at all.

  2. The Colonel says:

All this parental brutality reminds me of an old saying: the road to hell is paved with comfortable suburbs.

  3. Deep in your mind there is another side
A morbid truth one cannot hide
Unimaginable abuse was your past time high
To hear people scream, to watch them die

Return back to the burial site
Face your dreams upon this night
    Battered victims not far away
    Spirit past you now obey

    Images of your forgotten past
Your first life revealed at last
Now you’ll find to your surprise
All the victims you left behind

A place you feel you’ve been to before
Where life would turn right into gore
You dig deep down through the years of decay
The truth is revealed, you found your way

  4. The Colonel says:

That must be Death or Cannibal Corpse, if I’m not mistaking.

  5. That was “forgotten past” by Death.

Love all your writings Colonel but Im really impressed now.

Are you a fan of this type of music?

  6. The Colonel says:

jun jun, thank you brother. Yeah Forgotten past off Leprosy album, one of the best death metal records of all time. All boys who played with late Chuck Shuldiner on this record (Rick Rozz, Bill Andrews and Terry Butler) went on to form Massacre, another classic death metal band.

I got into extreme music in the early 80’s by listening to Venom’s Black Metal and Slayer’s Show No Mercy. Since I was an avid fan of bands like Black Sabbath and Jusad Priest, it was only a natural progression for me. Apart from thrash and death metal, I also listen to lots of Scandinavian Black metal bands such as Mayhem, Dark Throne, Emperor, etc. Me and some friends used to jam over the weekends and play some of our favorite songs. I was playing guitar; haven’t done that for sometimes though, but I think I should. It’s major fun.

By the way, the best 2009 album I’ve listened to so far is Kreator’s Hordes of Chaos. Check it out if you still haven’t. Killer stuff.

  7. chip love says:

    welcome to hell.

i read somewhere that varg “count grishnahk” vikernes is getting out of prison this year. could be wrong.

  8. The Colonel says:

In Norway the maximum punishment is 15 years, Count has been in prison since 1994, I believe this year he’ll get out; unless the authorities want to fuck with him for his failed attempt to scape in 2003. Man, if he gets out, chances are Euronymous fans are going to tear him apart.

  9. chip love says:

i have this bootleg mayhem disc. i think it’s called “dawn of the black hearts”. it’s got death with his brain hanging out as a cover. so sick.

saw a pretty good movie on halloween at the archlight in hollywood called “before the light takes us”. it was informative. i thought it could have been “darker”. but it had some good info. there’s some good footy of gorgoroth too. and a ton of darkthrone stuff.

i used to coordinate backline for the northwest deathfest in seattle/everett back in ’03 and ’04. we had some great shows. cannibal corpse was one of the stand outs. so raw, rapid, and evil.

  10. The Colonel says:

I have Mayhem’s Dawn of the Black Hearts, too. The story behind that bootleg’s cover always amazes me: Death, the singer of the band, commits suicide by blowing his head off. Euronymous, the guitar player of the band, goes to visit him and finds his corpse, but instead of calling the police, he goes to a local super market, buys a camera and comes to take pictures including that infamous cover. furthermore, he picks up some pieces of Death’s splattered brain and makes a nicklace with them which he used to wear untill the day he was brutally murdered by Count Grishnahk, the bass player of the band. These guys are truely one of the most evil bands in the history of extreme music. After all these years, still when I listen to Freezing Moon off this bootleg, I get the shivers.

  11. chip love says:

totally. freezing moon is the track. so cold. i found black metal through the band dead can dance. so i heard the electronic/burzum stuff before the metal side. but those early mayhem tracks are ice cold.

  12. The Colonel says:

Speaking of east coast metal shows, I think Milwaukee Metal Fest is one of the best, even though the quality of attending bands is not as good as it used to be. I was there in 96, some of the best American and European bands played that year, including Deicide and Hypocrisy.

Unfortunately we don’t have enough of those shows in the U.S, for example we dont have anything like Dynamo or Wacken Open Air. Instead we have Ozz Fest which has became a joke recently. But last year I was at two awesome shows: Metal Masters with Judas Priest, Heaven & Hell, Motor Head and Testament, and Iron Maiden’s Somewhere Back in Time.

  13. Same here Colonel. I was listening to Priest, Madien, etc. in the early 80’s. I also liked punk bands like Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Discharge, Minor Threat, and the first Suicidal record. So thrash metal was the perfect combo of those 2 styles. Loved all the usual thrash bands (except Anthrax) with my 2 favorites being Eternal Nightmare by Vio-lence and Slayer’s Reign in Blood (of course)

I was only 8 years old in 1980 and never heard of Venom or Hellhammer until around 1985.

Im not big on black metal but theres a few bands I like such as emperor and dark throne. Euronymous, Count Grishnahk, and those other crazy fucks make Glen Benton look like a lightweight. Right now Ive been listening to a lot grindcore such as early Napalm, Repulsion, Phobia and Siege.

Speaking of metal fests, I went to one of the first ones in Los Angeles called “November to Dismember” back in 2000. Tons of great bands, including Venom on the bill. However, a lot of bands never showed up including Venom. I later read in an interview that Venom didnt even know they were on the bill. Apparently, the promoter Jack K. (who also promotes the Miwalkue Metal Fest)has a habit of putting bands on the bill just to get people in the door. Lots of people were there to see Venom and were pissed off.

Thanks Colonel for the Kreator Hordes of Chaos tip. I always loved early Kreator (pleasure to kill, terrible certanity) but they kinda lost me on the later releases. Sounds like you know your stuff Colonel so I will definitely check it out.

  14. The Colonel says:

Right on brother. About Hordes of Chaos, it’s the closest thing to Pleasure to Kill, old school to the core. It’s great to have metal heads like you and Chip Love on this board.

  15. Im all over Hordes of Chaos. Sounds like Mille and the guys are back to their roots.

Just watched a DVD called “get thrashed, the story of thrash metal.” Its a nicely done documentary. Theres no narration boring with you shit you already know. Its just the bands giving their perspective on other bands. Exodus actually gets the most indepth coverage which I thought was killer.

Props to my guys The Colonel and Chip Love for having excellent taste in music. Always a pleasure to talk metal with those in the know.

  16. hey guys i’ve been reading, i’m not into the death, thrash metal, but cut my teeth on old school metal. you know ac/dc,priest,iron maiden, scorpions, ozzy of course, got to see all of sabbath reunited in ’99 it was a great show. colonel you talked about some metalfest in milwaukee, you guys familiar with texas jams of the 80’s. got to catch the last one they had in ’87 was kinda disapointed, acts were boston, whitesnake, tesla, poison, and aerosmith.

  17. The Colonel says:

jon jon, I’m glad you liked Hordes of Chaos, that’s some bad ass old school thrashin’. Speaking of Kreator, also check out this DVD if you haven’t:

At the Pulse of Kapitulation: Live in East Berlin,1990

This live show was recorded during their Extreme Agression tour, and had been out of print for years untill last year they released it’s digitally restored version. This DVD is loaded with bonus material including their classic videos: Terror Zone and People of the Lie.

I watched Get Thrashed, too. Awesome stuff. Exodus gets some decent coverage which they totally deserve. Of their more recent albums, my favorite is Tempo of the Damned.

  18. The Colonel says:

Pornfan, right on brother. I’ve been listening to Sabbath, Priest and Maiden for years, but I tell you, I’m very disappointed at what Ozzy Osbourne had been doing for the past years: first he under the influence of his greedy whore of a wife Sharon turned Ozz Fest into a joke by putting crappy, MTV friendly teen bands on the bill and turning a metal festival into a circus, and then they invited cameras to their house for their reality show to film Ozzy wondering around the house and picking up dog crap like a fucking idiot. That was bullshit and I hated it; but I’m glad that Sabbath boys got back with Ronnie James Dio and formed Heaven & Hell; they’re going to release a new album next month titled: The Devil You Know, following by a world tour.

As for Texas jams in the 80’s , I’m familiar with them, but I’ve never been in any. Like I said, we need more metal fests in the U. S.

  19. Oh my god you guys are all in love.
You really need to read these posts at one time!
Colonel are all those people Death etc, real? Did the guy who blew his brains out really die? And did the drummer kill the other guy?

  20. The Colonel says:

Kay, you’re awesome, man. All those people are real, the guy who blew his brains out is as dead as he could be, and it was the bass player who killed the guitar player, not the drummer. Welcome to the underground music scene. I bet they don’t talk about this stuff on American Idol, do they?

Here, check out the infamous cover of Mayhem’s Dawn of the Black Hearts for yourself:

    http://www.metal-archives.com/images/8/0/7/5/8075.jpg

  21. I know you are totally blown away that I am not a heavy metal fan!
OK that is gross. But I can’t believe that it is real, it has to be staged.

  22. The Colonel says:

No dear, it’s not staged, it’s real and everybody knows that. I’m shocked at how late you guys at New England get the news and facts. It gotta be the bubble thing.

  23. Colonel you flatter me that I would have ANY clue about heavy metal.
But as you say do your homework, so I asked a few friends that are into this music and of course I shocked the hell out of them that I knew what I was talking about.
They started to get excited thinking my magazine was doing to do an article…I was sorry to disappoint them.
By the way …where is my video???

  24. The Colonel says:

Good, so now you know if your magazine wants to do any article on metal music and culture, I’m your to-go-guy.

I’m uploading a new video for you as I’m writing this. Hope you enjoy it.

  25. chip love says:

    “black metal bitches”

    scene one:

claire dames in corpse paint and dog collar gang fucked by a coven of druids. (music “the rite of infernal invocation” by gorgoroth)

    scene two:

fictional black metal band “obscenity charge” cover cum junkie audrey hollander’s face. leaving her face fucked for dead with their own cum creating her coprse paint facial mask. (music: “chainsaw gutsfuck” by mayhem)

    scene three:

crucified whore lucy lee gets sodomized and dp’d before falling from the cross and revealing her stigmata. (music: “fucked with a knife” by cannibal corpse)

  26. The Colonel says:

That’s a hell of an idea for a movie, I love that. How about the sequel:

‘Black Metal Bitches Part II: Brides of Satan’

The casting is a work in progress, but here is the soundtrack list:

    1. Dead Skin Mask by Slayer

    2. Sacrificial Suicide by Deicide

    3. Post Mortal Ejaculation by Cannibal Corpse

    4. Corpse Grinder by Massacre

    5. Necro Lust by Mayhem

    6. Together As One by Death

    7. No Love Lost by Carcass

    8. Pleasures of Molestation by Hypocrisy

    9. Fuck Me Jesus By Marduk

    10. Down on Whores by Benediction

  27. Thats a killer soundtrack. Even got some Benediction in there. Dark is the fucking season.

I had a friend/producer who was going to make a movie similar to what Chip Love described. He had Felicia Fox in the cast. He never got around to making it but he did introduce me to Felicia. Very cool and down to earth woman who loved old Maiden and Priest.

RIP to a fallen metal brother who passed away at age 38 this past weekend. Phil Newbaker guitarist for Mausoleum-RIP bro

  28. The Colonel says:

RIP to Phil Newbaker, our condolences to his family and friends; it was too soon. These guys have released only one album so far: ‘Cadaveric Displays of Ghoulish Ghastliness’, but that’s old school to the core and very promising. I’ll look forward to listening more of their music.

Currently I’m listening to new Pestilence album in 16 years: ‘Resurrection Macabre’, good stuff, it’s similar to their classic album ‘Testimony of the Ancients’. It delivers.

Speaking of metal head porn whores, there aren’t enough. Of more recent girls, Amber Rayne is into stuff like Sabbath, Priest, Van Halen and Motley Crue; but I tell you man, one of the most hardcore metal head whores was Jasmine St. Claire, she was into extreme stuff from Slayer to Exodus, Cannibal Corpse, etc. I shot her a couple of times and used to hang out with her a lot; she was for real. She hosted some metal documentaries in the past few years.

  29. chip love says:

i was wondering about this today: why are all strippers, porn whores, and really american girls in general so solely into hip-hop, rap and r&B? i’m not racist in the least and i’m about to use some inflammatory language that i hope is understood to be coming from a post-racialist point of view.

most of these chicks are so only into the “american street-n***** dream”: quick money. de-prioritizing education while over-emphasizing the value of “street” knowledge. glamorization of the pimp and drug dealer whom are in fact exploiters. selling drugs. hyper inflated ego. general shamelessness. an overbearing sense of entitlement founded in the vapid lyrics of rap music. acting as if “the game” is all that matters in life. and a nearly psychotic self-centered sense of identity. a self-aggrandizing attitude with no real regard for human relationships beyond that which can further a selfish agenda.

now i know african-americans didn’t invent this mentality. i hate this attitude in the private schooled, uber-rich, white reptile assholes who sit on top of the pyramid scheme called America too. but black culture sure does glamorize this ridiculous attitude and perpetuate it on a street level in almost all the rap music they create and sell. i am critical of that aspect of their culture, rather “our” culture, but i am not a racist. i love a good rap jam too. i even like the street thug rap. but sometimes it’s just too much. too simple. too stupid.

i hope that wasn’t too offensive to any black people who may have read what i wrote. obviously if i am out of bounds the moderator should feel free to delete this. i’m not even sure i should press the “submit comment” button right….now.

  30. The Colonel says:

Porn girls in general have dependent personality disorder, hence they need to cling to something and/or somebody that gives them the illusion of control and security. They mostly grow up in toxic envirouments and emotionally and mentally become dependent on abusive family members. So when they break from home after they reach the legal age, they don’t go too far. They simply replace an abusive step father with an abusive street pimp or a gangster wannabe. They can relate to that mindset.

  31. Of course blacks did not pioneer getting quick and easy street money. Italians and Jews did (Al Capone, Bugsy Siegel etc.)

Most rappers are from the hood and they grew up in the 80’s and 90’s when shit was at its worst. They are products of their environment. You can’t criticize them for speaking on what they know. John Mayer or Jason Mraz come from nice stable middle class homes, so what do they sing about? Love. Well there’s no love in the ghetto, at least its in short supply.

All the things you mentioned are extentions of real things. Virtually none of these rappers were ever big time gangsters or hustlers, but they saw it. We shouldn’t be lamenting that rappers talk about drugs, money cars and bitches, we should lament the society and root causes which cause them to have that limited mindset. Ghetto’s didn’t create themselves, if you want there’s a great book about the Bronx called Amazing Grace.

  32. The Colonel says:

Allright, you expressed your opinion on my article and my thread which was against our mutual agreement. You offered to not contact me, not comment on my threads and not respond to me directly or indirectly if I do the same. I agreed, and I did not communicate with you and made any comments about you; and I expect you to respect our mutual agreement and your own words and make no further comments on my threads and do not respond to me.

  33. That’s not a problem, but that is in response to Chip’s comment which has nothing to do with this article. If you want to interpret it that literally that’s fine, I don’t have a problem with that.

  34. “de-prioritizing education while over-emphasizing the value of “street” knowledge.”

Thomas Sowell and other might say that blacks got that from the Southern Scot Irish cultural heritage.

Is even in the Southern Evangelical tradition who is deeply antintelectual. While Judaism and European Christianity traditions (Catholicism, Anglicanism, Lutheranism, Dutch Calvinism, Methodism) cherished education, Southern Christianity was and is very antintelectual. Being a nerd or a egghead became an insult in America when that tradition became dominant in pop culture due to the influence on black culture.
A distrust of education and any complicated idea. That is the heritage being passed on to poor black people. As a Jewish friend of mine told in a race forum, the black underclass and the white trailer trash has more thing in common that they are willing to accept.

  35. The Colonel says:

All this socio-economic and historical reasoning is only an excuse to justify bad behaviour, while the truth to be told, everybody has choices in life. I refuse to accept a gang member who makes a living by pimping and selling drugs in the street didn’t have the choice to become something else such as a construction worker, a cab driver or a security guard.

He has chosen the easy way out by becoming a gang member, not knowing choosing the easy way out is not always the easiest thing to do. So now the least he can and should do is to be straight forward and admit to his choice and live with it’s consequences without seeking to justify and reddem himself.

You are what you are and you reap what you sow, for better or for worst.

  36. I didnt know Jasmine St. Claire was into the music. I remember her hosting some metal dvd magazine a while back. Also recall her introducing bands at some of the festivals, including Milwakuee. I thought it was just a way to promote her movies. She was always on Howard Stern pimping herself and her gangbang movies. One time she was on Stern to promote her fucking a big fat pasty virgin. She went out with the drummer in Slayer (Bostaph). She said in an interview that he was nothing special in bed, lol. Anyway, glad to know she’s not a poser and is truly into the music.

Definitely not enough metal porn whores. Briefly spoke one time with Misty Mendez. She mentioned she loved Slayer’s haunting the chapel. Still, we need more. I might have to hit up porn star karokee and belt out some Deicide style vocals to get the whores into it. I’ll dedicate “Sacrificial Suicide” and “Lunatic of God’s Creation” to Shelly Luebben while I hold one of her gay pink crosses upside down.

Im going to have to make a trip to Downey and Dark Realm Records. See if the Sadistic Intent guys have the new Pestilence. If its anything like “Testimony of the Ancients”, it will be a worthy purchase. Thanks Colonel

  37. in response to the issue of rap. times change society changes. i was a teenager in the late 70’s to early 80’s. i grew up like most white kids then listening to classic rock and old school metal, i also dabbled a bit into r& b.(we did’nt know what rap was in ’82 when i graduated). now, a majority of your white kids listen to thug and gangsta rap. all classes rich, upper, middle and your trailer trash. it’s been like that for more than twenty years. i’m starting to ramble, but i’ll remember sitting at a signal light one time, a jeep pulls next to me with four hot blonde teenage girls blarring the hardest rap shit. i had to laugh.

  38. The Colonel says:

jun jun, You’re welcome brother. About the new Pestilence album, it’s released in Europe, and is scheduled for release in the U.S on April 28. I bought the import version from amazon.com, you can do that too but it’ll be a bit more expensive. Here is the link to order import version from amazon.com:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001RTWX1W/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&qid=1237928212&sr=1-2&condition=new

Speaking of record stores, man they keep disappearing into thin air. Tower Records went out of business, F.Y.E, Virgin, Bionic, and almost every other franchise stores are closing their branches like there’s no tommorow. It’s hard to imagine a few years from now there would be an actual, phisycal store left where you can walk into and buy a fucking CD or DVD. The music industry is in crisis, according to a recent Rolling Stone report, CD sales dropped %50 in 2008. Sometimes I wonder whether this abyss our world has fallen into has any bottom.

  39. Yeah it is amazing how record stores are becoming extinct. I went to Huntington Beach a while back and was shocked to see Bionic records closed down. I used to live around the corner from it and loved that place. About a month ago I was down there again and glad to see noise noise noise records is still around on Beach Blvd. Bought a DVD of the first Ultimate Revenge Tour there.

In LA, you have Amoeba and a few Wherehouses left, but thats pretty much it. It seems the music industry is having the same problem as porn-everyone is downloading the material for free.

  40. The Colonel says:

True, and it’s terrible, internet piracy and the irresponsible sense of entitlement among the decadent new generation is destroying the entertainment industry and unfortunately the independent artists and new comers are the ones who suffer mostly. For example when a band like Judas Priest, Slayer or Cannibal Corpse releases a new album, they have an established fanbase and avid fans who will buy their music and merchandise and concert tickets; but when a new band who have probably financed their own album by their hard earned savings and borrowed money releases a new album and people steal their music instead of paying for it, that band can go bankrupt, because they don’t have the established fanbase and avid fans and they can’t rely on selling merchandise and concert tickets either; they will never have the opportunity, and in the long run, there won’t be many bands left.

That’s the same situation with porn: internet piracy has effected everybody from top to bottom, I for one can survive it, because I’ve established adequate business connections and tools and adapted new strategies (domestic and foreign cable, VOD & clip sales, etc); but new comers who don’t have enough business connections and tools and must rely on DVD sales of one movie to finance their next one, suffer the most and can even be driven out of business. It’s a complicated situation and like I said before, we’re all in this together, and eventually everybody pays the high cost of free material.

  41. chip love says:

it’s true, colonel. new bands are so fucked. the only bands record labels will pick up are bands that are really just faggot models or insipid fashion bitches who they can cross market with faggot shows like “The Hills” or the new “90210” or “Twilight”. then you’ve got prissy little trannies like Pete Wentz from Fall out Boy who claim that Perez Hilton is the new record industry. fuck that homo. he doesn’t know shit about music. and the bands he pumps on his site all completely suck on it.

if you’re a new act then you’ve got to get the buzz. which really just means you’ve got to be amazing. and you have to work the road and be hella focused and hella organized. then, to get kicked up to the big leagues, you’ve got to get an ipod commercial like Feist and all that pussy indie rock coming out of canada.

but some bands have made it on pure persistence. for example, in the jam/indie scene the band My Morning Jacket just worked the road real damn hard. they toured and they made some great music. i saw them play a third stage at some festival in 2003 to maybe 200 people and now they have 80,000 fans going nuts at bonnaroo.

Andre Nickatina in the hip-hop world is making it happen based on word of mouth and a sick ass original rap style. hyphy didn’t even claim him in the beginning and now he’s one of the key gangstas along side Mac Dre, E-40, Keak, Richie Rich and Mistah F.A.B. Andre Nickatina is like 37 years old and he’s been around since the early 90’s. But he’s finally breaking as we speak.

also, colonel…i thought of another killer metal band from that metal fest i worked on. INCANTATION!!! death metal for sure. i like the high pitched screeching vocal approach of black metal bands better than the satanic gutteral throb of death metal, but Incantation fuckin’ rule it.

Chip Love, you’re absolutely right. One of many devastating effects of internet piracy is that record labels and distributers refuse to sign up and support independent artists, because they see those artists as a liability, a risky investment in a declining market. Instead, they sign up and support teen whores and girly looking school boys who have the potential to become household names and sell thousands of merchandise from t-shirts to perfumes, lunch boxes, etc. Eventually that will shatter the essence of independent music.

In 1970, four young musicians from Birmingham, England got the opportunity to record their second full length album. They had 3 days to finish all 8 songs for which the record company paid them £400. The name of the band was Black Sabbath, that album was Paranoid; and the rest is the history of heavy metal music. Do you think something like that can ever happen in today’s world? I doubt that. Maybe Deicide’s Glen Benton said it best: ‘These days you have to be a whore to get a recording contract.’

About Incantation, I agree with you my man, they’re one of the best American death metal bands, especially they’re really strong at live performances. I saw them on tour with Morbid Angel and Nile a few years ago. They kicked some major ass. My favorite Incantation albums are ‘Onward to Golgotha’ and ‘Diabolical Conquest’.
