Some People You Just Can’t Reach

With all the constant swirling talk of the death of DVD (and the porn industry in general), and the sense of impending doom it has left floating around the San Fernando Valley, it was shocking to hear people talking at this weekend’s Erotica LA about actually launching new production companies. I think you’re a few years late to the gold rush, folks. It was great watching Lynn Lemay walk around the show floor trying to find someone to distribute her new DVDs. The only people who benefit now are the distributors who take 30-50% off the top, and pay the producers when they feel like it. Lynn should invest her money in a nice mutual fund instead.

The reason why porn is in the doldrums is because today there are few creative visionaries beyond video sex acts. When you stereotype the biz, it makes it all the more difficult to crossover or diversify. So everyone gets draged down into this self loathing mediocrity. Sure, free web content may have all but destroyed the video star. But then there are people who have talent above and beyond the ins and outs and wish to do other things to overcome the stigma. This is why Jenna Jameson is a millionaire. Critics may have a point about the rogues and scoundrels. But it does not rank their place in the social pecking order above the industry they write about or make a bad situation any better.
