Sept 23. 9:15 p.m. After some perceived slight (some guy called her a "Little girl"), Aaliyah started screaming. We're in a residential neighborhood. All Media Play's invitation emails implored us to keep quiet so as to not bother the neighbors of Remmet Studios in Canoga Park. Aaliyah shrieks: "You don't know what I've been through. I've been sick. I've been poisoned... I've been punched. I've gone through so much." Bob from Dane calms her down. He holds her. She lashes out at him with her fists and screams. 9:40 p.m. Jeff Mullen pulls Aaliyah aside and they have quiet chat. Aaliyah goes home. I call Bob from Dane Wednesday afternoon. He says: "I wanted to clear up something. I've known her for over a year. She's done a few movies. She doesn't drive. I pick her up Saturday night and take her to the party. I told her, 'Meet me outside your building' so I wouldn't have to wait. She was a little bit strange. She said she was with some people and a guy gave her weed and it tasted weird and she smoked it. "As I'm driving her to the party, she's acting strange. We get out of the car and she really starts to act weird. She's talking to the car, she's talking to the wall, she's talking to the pole. "She goes to the building and has a fight with one of these guys. She runs down the street screaming. "She was on something. "She's a kid. I don't want this ruining her life. She needs the money to work. Nobody will shoot her now. They're afraid to even talk to her. "I drove her home. "I do this a lot. I take girls back and forth. "My other girl, Nyema Knox, she decides halfway through the party to strip totally naked. She was running around naked. I'm watching over her to make sure she's OK. You give these ladies free drinks and that's the end of the whole evening. They were putting them away... I don't drink when I'm driving. "I've known Aaliyah. She's not that way. She's dependable. She shows up on time. She does the job and she leaves." I run into Suzy Mandel, who starred in 1981's Blonde Ambition and appeared naked in several porn movies (though she never had sex on camera). She's working as an assistant to Jennifer James. Suzy looks her age (about 50). She's put on weight and her hair has turned grey. Her attitude is cheery and her figure is busty. She retains her British accent even though she's lived in the America since 1980. Christina Aguchi says she will graduate with her Business degree in a year. "I love the attention of being a porn star and I hate negative people," she says. Jasmine Byrne audio interview. Jasmine says she's written a movie that spoofs Jennifer Lopez. It will be shot in a month by Jeff Mullen and Adam & Eve and Jasmine will star. "I get married a lot. I'm actually going to be singing in the movie, my own lyrics, my own music." Luke: "You wrote the script?" Jasmine: "I have a lot of talent. I wrote my own music. Do you want to hear me sing?" She imitates Mariah Carey. The resemblance is frightening. Jasmine: "I'm working on a demo and an album. I'm going to try to crossover. "I'm going to write a lot of stories about my nightmares... I'll be the next Stephen King." "I've had a few songs stolen. I heard them on the radio by one-hit wonders." Luke: "What do you write poems about?" Jasmine: "The hardships of life. Relationships. "I want to remake the song Rumors." "I've had a hard life. My mom left me when I was younger. Everybody who has done something wrong to me it makes me put more feeling into my writing. When I sing it, everybody understands." Luke: "How does being a porn star affect relationships?" Jasmine: "It's hard. I would never date someone outside of the industry. Hopefully there's a gentleman out there." Luke: "Did you lose any friends [because] you entered porn?" Jasmine, who grew up near Riverside: "Before I was in porn, I didn't have any friends. Everybody hated me. I don't know why. I was a nice girl. I almost got suspended. I almost got expelled. I was always fighting." Luke: "Have you made friends since you entered porn?" Jasmine: "Yes, it is easy for me because so many people in the industry have gone through similar things. You can totally relate to each other. You break down walls. I've lost a few friends in this industry too but this is L.A. You've got to expect that." After telling what she likes about the industry, Jasmine says she does not like the "disrespect. A lot of male talent and a lot of people in the industry see you as a porn star and they only see a little girl who likes to f---. I'm not that. I have a huge woman's worth. I get pissed off. Everybody knows I have a temper. I go from zero to boiling point in two seconds." "You really do have a camera of death," says a woman. "Every time I go to your site, I reevaluate my whole body image." Gram Ponante moves away from me. "Did I offend you?" I ask. "No, not at all," he says. "I just hear time's winged chariot hurrying near." 11:40 p.m. There's a sweet smell of marijuana. Amber Rayne's drunk. One old photographer, about 60, wheels a canister of oxygen around with him. I've seen him at several of these events, always with the oxygen linked into his nose. The man appears to have one foot in the grave but he'll risk everything to photograph porn chicks. Van Styles tells me: "You're not supposed to wear white after labor day." LFP dramatically slowed shooting over the summer and will continue this selective attitude through the rest of the year.
