AHF’s Newest Bill- Free Condoms For Prisoners!

Nl- Just one of the many free bennies you get in the big house right? And just as an aside, when you get a press release and a photo it is meant to be distributed by the press. Funny that this condom photo is labeled by them, LA Times Condom. Does that mean they sent it out with permission to let everyone use it? Or just decided that they could use it without permission… Just curious…

Assembly Bill 999, a bill introduced by California Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Oakland, 18th District) requiring the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) to phase in condom distribution in all CDCR facilities over the next five years passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee on April 9, 2013. AB 999 will be heard by the CA Appropriations Committee on May 24, 2013.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) has always supported condom access as a cost effective means of reducing the spread of HIV. Through our Public Health Division and Global Advocacy efforts, AHF has embarked on an international condom distribution campaign (Condom Nation) that has provided more than 11 million condoms for free since 2012.

Bonta’s legislation rises from earlier efforts to allow prisoners access to condoms. Most recently, a report from a Solano State Prison pilot ordered by Governor Schwarzenegger in 2008 found that condom access did not increase consensual sex or rape, but did create a cost effective barrier to HIV, Hepatitis and other life threatening diseases.

Bonta and AHF maintain prisoner access to condoms is a very cost effective means of reducing the transmission of preventable diseases both within the prison system and in the communities into which prisoners are released.
