Freedom Isn’t Free

Reflections on Independence Day
by Larry Flynt from http://www.huffingtonpost.com/larry-flynt

On Independence Day, I ask you to think about how many freedoms we have and how many we’re in danger of losing. Every day, the right wing moralists are trying to chip away at our basic civil liberties. They’re trying to restrict women’s access to healthcare, strip workers of their ability to earn a living wage and pass laws about who you can marry.
The right wing is fond of saying that freedom isn’t free. And they’re right. It isn’t. We see it in the cost of the lives of brave men and women in uniform. But it’s more that. I’ve said this many times, the freedom on which this country was founded is not the just freedom for the thoughts we love and agree with, it’s freedom for the thoughts we hate the most. That too is a cost of freedom which must be paid by everyone.
Today as we pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifices made to build this nation, it is important that we remember the full cost of liberty, and not forget that independence is more readily available when people remain focused on the fullest pursuit of their own happiness rather than condemning the way others pursue theirs.

The law pursues us for pursuing happiness but cheers to “freedom”. Freedom isn’t free and the cost of freedom doesn’t fall within most people’s cost of living budget.

  2. Freedom my fucking ass…name ONE just ONE thing you do that isn’t regulated by the government in some way…theres my challenge for today

Well thank god we still have the freedom to watch porn today, I mean where else can a guy like Rod Fontana go from Vet to bad porn actor with the world’s ugliest dick, or this side of Blake Palmers. God Bless America.

We’re all free to say how free we are, Mike South, even if we aren’t! How’s that?

You’re also free to drink a crappochino from Starbucks… except you gotta pay star bucks for it.

  5. Right wing moralists bla bla bla. Left wing pieties bla bla bla.

It would appear that bloggers are free to post the same worn out shtick from Larry Flynt.

Actually, freedom IS free. Saying “freedom is not free” is to misunderstand the foundation of freedom itself. This is what the philosophy of the United States is supposedly all about: that people are free by their nature, fundamentally born free. U.S. political theory basses itself on the premise that freedom is free, a birthright, something we get for free just by being born.

The problem is the SUPPRESSION of freedom, which is what Larry Flynt is bringing to our attention, and that this suppression is NOT coming from a foreign country, but from our own political and religious leaders – specificially, and quite correctly, “Right Wing Moralists” aka The Republican Party.

The constitution was created by slave holding freemasons who excluded women from voting. One man’s freedom has always depended on manys’ slavery. The moment you’re born you become property of the state.
