Steven St. Croix

Steven St Croix "has enough acting ability to make it in straight films. He's got a wicked sense of humor and has the talent to turn in great character performances, as seen in Dogwalker and The Masseuse 2. For comedy, watch Steven do his best Jerry Lewis on acid opposite Johnathan Morgan in Arabian Nights, Haunted Nights and Western Nights." (Tim Connelly, AFW)

Steven grew up as the class clown and didn't lose his virginity until 18. "When occasions arose, I took them like Jack Nicholson would."

From an AVN review of Western Nights: "St. Croix makes on-going Nicholson references as though the actor were some kind of Indian spiritual guide leading St. Croix through the cactus, rock and sagebrush of life."

Steven: "When I got into the business I told myself I would not look for a relationship. I couldn't handle it, knowing my partner was having sex with other guys. I realize that's a Dark Age opinion, but with my feelings of self-esteem I'd prefer to keep my business and private lives separate." (AFW)

Steven didn't live up to his plan. He gradually fell in love with his current girlfriend - Vivid girl Dyanna Lauren.

"I wanted to be a singer and dancer in the worst way. Well, I figure I can't act. I can't sing. I'm pretty homely, but I'm one funny motherf---er." (AFW)

St. Croix went to vocational school to be a mason, but all the job openings he found were bussing tables and doing dishes. So he began stripping and then became a production assistant for director Ron Jeremy for Deep Throat 6. When one of the scheduled actors couldn't appear because he was in jail, St. Croix stepped in.

It took him a while to decide whether to make porn his new career. "First I had to consider what would my family and friends think. Once I found out who my true friends were and that my family loves me for who I am and supports me in my decisions, my decision was made….. If I have to have sex with a woman in front of a camera so that I can work regularly and have a decent standard of living, then I'll do that because I want to act." (AFW)

Along with Johnathan Morgan, Steven starred in the Western Nights, Haunted Nights series for porn's leading comedy director Jay Shanahan. "The repression of sexuality in America is atrocious," says St. Croix. "To display sexuality is natural. Repressing it snowballs into society with crime, anger. Violence is life-denying. Sex is life-providing, life-cultivating." (AFW)

In early 1996, with Jon Dough, Steven became a Vivid boy. "Usually girls get all the attention, the contracts and the money."

In the spring of 1996, Steven directed two movies shot back to back over four days - Mind Set and Hard Feelings. He plays the lead in both and he wrote Mind Set. Frank Marino, Steve's Director of Photography wrote Hard Feelings.

"Directing only works for me if I direct material that I have written and I have a vision for. Instead of being one of those directors who churn out two or three videos a week to pay their bills, I'd rather only do it when I want to.

"I'm learning directing in hopes of going mainstream."

Steve's ambition is to make a movie with hardcore sex and mainstream actors who could help bring the story to life.

The Vivid boy never studied acting until he entered porn. "I've always been an entertainer, the class clown. I like holding people's attention and getting them to believe what I'm doing.

"I've worked construction since 13 and I'm a mason by trade but this is the work I enjoy most.

"Directing boils down to telling a story. If you remember friends who told great campfire stories with detail and emotion - that's directing: taking that emotion and channeling it tothe cameraman, the lighting guy, the actors. Some people aren't in tune with their feelings. Acting is all about expressing feelings, being able to bring out diffferent emotions. Many of the girls in this business are either repressed sexually or have been abused. They all have their own chaotic stories.

"What I've tried to do is find the best way for me to get to the person I'm talking to. I need something from them and I have ways of getting it out of them." (AFW)

AVN Publisher Paul Fishbein says that the best publicity stunt of 1996 was Steven St. Croix insuring his penis for one million dollars.

The 7/15/96 San Francisco Examiner profiled Steven under the headline "The Making of a Porn Star." The subhead read: "Steven St. Croix is an actor - and he has a mission: To help other 'adult entertainment' stars cross over to the mainstream."

Writes Barry Walters: "Steven St. Croix comes across like any regular guy who puts a little too much gel in his hair. With a background in sales, the Los Angeles-based 27-year old actor is talkative, opinionated and tends to sell his ideas with sweeping hand gestures that draw attention to the Rolex on his wrist. Maybe his slick taste in clothes and orangey, possibly poured-on suntan whisper American Gigolo, but St. Croix's average-Joe demeanor fails to suggest that he is one of the top adult entertainment actors.

"During his mere four years of working in what he calls "the industry," St. Croix has appeared in approximately 350 films. Last year he became the first male actor to sign an exclusive contract with Vivid Video…"

When the Connecticut-born stud bought another motorcycle, Vivid took out a $1 million dollar insurance policy, payable upon "accidental bodily injury which results in physical severance of his genitalia."

Steven says that "male actors are a staple in adult movies as much - if not more so - than women… The life of an adult actress is maybe one, two years. You get these beautiful girls coming into this industry and everyone wants them. All of a sudden, they've done 100 movies, they've worked with most of the guys in the industry and it becomes too much of a good thing. Men get bored. They see a girl a few times and move on to fresh meat.

"The male actors have been mostly life support systems for a penis…. I'm trying to make male actors more recognizable."

In the fall of 1996, Vivid terminated Steve's contract after it discovered he'd done a scene for Tom Byron's Cumback Pussy series.

Soon afterwards, Steven quit porn to concentrate on his mainstream career. In 3/99 he wrote to me:  "I'm seeking a manager right now to sign on to do action movies. Most likely they will be straight to video movies but I hope to parlay that in to bigger studio films. I'm also training with the Groundlings Improvisation Group. Hopefully I'll be working in their shows towards the fall. Me and Dyanna [Lauren] are still together (3 years) and she currently provides foster care for abandoned dogs thru an organization called New Leash On Life, which finds homes for dogs brought thru the city kennel Department. If you could put up a link to www.NLOL.org and her personal web site www.dyannalauren.com we would be greatlly appreciative. She is also planning to start a film company with the Spearmint Rhino Corp - owners of the gentlemens club."

Steven and Dyanna broke up in early 2000.
