Michael Zen is another Hollywood wanna be stuck making porn. After graduating with a Master's Degree in Filmmaking from UCLA, he additionally honed his craft editing adult films through the '70s and '80s.

He directed two hardcore versions of The Purple Rose of Cairo and Cinesex 1, 2.

"A nifty idea, well done by Zen, who has a love of Hollywood filmmaking and is one of the best and most overlooked talents working in adult," writes AFW.

Cinesex 2 is not as good, but "if you are one of those porn fans who complain about the lack of story in adult films, this is for you. Otherwise, you may find the schizy plot and inability to act...disturbing when all you want is hot sex." (AFW 96D p. 108)

Zen made Ice Woman 1 & 2 for Vivid in 1993. Once again, the original is fine but the sequel sucks. Vivid has a habit of cutting one good movie into two inadaquate halves.

The Secret Garden, parts one and two, appeared in 1992. "A look into the secret lives of the well-to- do Hyde family where a staid exterior conceals the father's (Mike Horner) investment and indulgence in X-rated movies, the son's (Randy Spears) porn and sexual excesses, the mother's masturbatory fantasies, and the multiple personality of Ashlyn Gere, who affects every member of the family. Story, production values, and sex of the highest caliber are all woven into a seamless journey into the depths of depravity and the heights of arousal. Zen sets up the scenes with the master strokes of a classic painter and presents the sex with the studied eye of a lewd voyeur." (AFW)

Secret Garden 2 is the only Zen sequel that lives up to the quality of the original. "More delvings into the deep dark secrets of the outwardly staid Hyde family. In this second half, Ashlyn's multiple character moves in with the son, Johnathan Morgan. And all hell breaks loose...

"Charged with high voltage erotica, the story takes a back seat to the fine f---ing on display." (AFW)

In 1995's Blue Movie, Steven St. Croix stars as a cross fressing porn director obsessed with uncovering the secrets of female sensuality. "Visually, Zen is brilliant. The sex deserves more attention." (AFW 97)
