Jerry Butler (Paul Seiderman) may be porn's all time best actor.

His autobiography Raw Talent (1990) goes beyond criticizing the porn industry and its leading personalities, to slandering them. Many of its stories are exaggerated if not fabricated.

Raw Talent effectively ended Jerry's tenure in the biz. He says that the only persons he knows in porn who still like him are his friends that he didn't write about and William Margold.

Jerry lives in upstate New York. Split from his previous wife Lisa Loring, the child actress on the TV show The Adams Family, Butler married a woman in 1996 who insists that he avoid the porn business. The former coke head drives school busses and ambulances.

Jerry says he's been a sex freak since age three when he began masturbating. At age seven he watched porno films on his dad's 8mm projector. At 13 Jerry lost his virginity to a prostitute.

At 18, while studying acting in New York, Jerry found himself surrounded by gays trying to seduce him. He auditioned for ABC's soap One Life to Live and the gay casting director offered him the part of Brad if Jerry would have sex with him. Jerry refused. The actor playing Brad's father, phoned Jerry frequently at home, impressing his mom.

She wouldn't have been nearly so happy if she'd known that the man had a bet going with another actor on the show on who would first seduce Jerry. Charlie, a Polish guy in his early 50s, took a particular shine to Butler, calling his home frequently. Once when he called, Jerry's mom answered the phone. Jerry told her that he didn't want to talk to Charlie. She remonstrated with him until Jerry yelled at her, "He wants to f--- me in the ass."

"What?

""He wants to f--- your son in the ass. That's why he calls all the time. And he wants to marry me in a gay church."

Scanning through Backstage, Butler came across an ad looking for extras on a porno set. He answered the call and did his first flick, 1979's Wet, Wild and Wonderful. Jim Clark directed.

"In my first scene, a woman gave me head. She sucked my cock in an unbelievable way and I came all over her face. I discovered she was a drug addict. Maybe my cock represented her next fix and that was why she sucked it with such desperation."

In his next scene, Jerry did Kandi Barbour who suffered from hypochondria. She spent much of her porn income on unnecessary medical tests.

After three days work, Jerry walked away with several hundred dollars. He determined that he'd never again do porn, a determination he repeated over the next dozen years. But Butler kept doing porn until porn no longer wanted him.

He appeared in Chuck Vincent's Roommates which opened at the 8th Street Playhouse, which runs general release movies, not pornos. Judith Christ gave the movie a good review and singled out Jerry's performance.

"People in the business didn't take Roommates seriously. Somebody looking to get off would rather see five barrels of cum on some girl's face than emotion and drama.

"Veronica Hart and I had fun. Later she said our sex scene was the only one in porno which "felt like love" to her, and her husband still teases her about it."

Butler developed his friendship with gay Chuck Vincent who was so nice Jerry wishes he could've given himself sexually to the director who died of AIDS.

In an acting performance equal to that of Courtney Love playing a junkie in the People vs. Larry Flynt, Butler plays a coke addict in 1987's Inner Blues. He's so under the influence he can't do his wife played by Taija Rae - another coke head who became a street hooker after her porn career.

Jerry blew most of his porn earnings on cocaine. "I've done tons of cocaine watching videos of Tina Marie. She's the ultimate porn queen. We've never had a sex scene. I love to watch her play with her pussy and perform lesbian scenes.

"I had great sex with Nikki Randall while she had a boyfriend. Before I married Lisa [Loring], I was always with women involved with other men. I was a vacation, for the women always went home.

"My guess is that 70% of the people in the business have herpes. Women can easily disguise it if the breakout occurs inside, but it's amazing what men will do to try to cover it up. Such as "I got my dick caught in my zipper."

"Recently guys like Jeff Stryker, who was the king of male homosexual movies, have started making heterosexual porn. Stryker has tried to fend off criticism by claiming he was always the f---er, not the f---ee, in gay anal sex... I'm not reassured."

The Raw Talent series is partially based on Jerry's life and uses the same title as his autobiography. AVN calls series the best adult movies about adult movies.

In the first scene of the original, Jerry Butler as Eddie, a struggling actor, works as a waiter. When a rich old woman gets crusty with him, Eddie vents all his frustration (masturbates) on a twenty pound cooked turkey and serves the violated bird to the old bitch with polite satisfaction.

Butler returns in Raw Talent 2 as the actor who wants to do more porn. "Joyce Snyder's clever script comments on many subjects while the sex accents three-ways. This was one of Colleen Brennan's best roles, and the erotic romp with oriental Sheena Horne and Buck Adams achieves classic status.

"The cynical finale in the trilogy runs the entire industry over the coals - nothing escapes the wrath of he screenwriter's pen. Jerry Butler is still trying to get out of porn, with Ona Zee as the sleazy producer and April West as the jaded, lustful film star. Scott Baker making love to a toilet is priceless, and the Dark Brothers satire (Jerry Butler making love to three black chicks on the subway) creates laughs and hard-ons." (AVN)

AVN: "If you think Jerry Butler is a pain in the ass in real life, watch him in Special Treatment. Butler plays a key government witness...and is being guarded for the weekend. Nothing satisfies him. He wants his girlfriend Ashley Nicole, even thoug he's offered hooker Alexandria Quinn, whom he turns down." (AVN)

Jerry was not easy to work with. Many of his peers thought him crazy. "I usually bring toys to the set to pacify Jerry Butler," Bill Margold told the authors of Porn Gold. "I'll bring him little plastic men, or little dolls for him to play with, to pacify him, because he needs his toys or he goes nuts! He's a nice person, and he is a very good performer. But the man will disrupt the set faster than anybody else I've ever met - he just starts rolling around and making noises and jokes. I bring toys for him and he chews the heads off them…"

Elsewhere in his autobiography Raw Talent, Jerry Butler gives opinions on his peers.

"Sharon Kane's boyfriend Michael died of AIDS and she stuck by him till the end. People from New York like Sharon Kane, Sharon Mitchell, Veronica Hart and Kelly Nichols are more grounded than California girls."

Jerry compares going down on one famous porn actress to eating out a dirty birdcage.

AVN's Gene Ross conducted his first interview with Butler in the early '90s. He remembers Jerry frequently comparing his penis to a sword.

In AVN's 12/97 issue, Ross describes his encounter with Butler at that fall's ECVS. Butler, looking buffed and happy, told Gene that he wrote Raw Talent "out of anger, frustration and bitter resentment. I lost control of myself." Jerry wants to rejoin porn.

"I was a child in that world. Now I'm an adult who can understand why I had to stay a child. A lot of people don't want to grow up in that world [porn]. You want to feel free. The freer you feel in the business, the less guilt you feel and the easier it is to do your work.

"Cocaine was shoveling the locomotive to keep the train going. The movies were a reason to make the money to do the drugs. Late at night it was hard to accept who I was. Because after the applause, the attention, the laughs… I was a lonely person." (AVN 12/97)

In 12/98, I received this email: "Jerry Butler works out regularly here in south Brooklyn, New York at Bally's in Sheepshead Bay. He is employed as a yellow-school bus driver, transporting mostly developmently-disabled children in the Brooklyn-area. Jerry (aka Paul Seiderman) lives with a girlfriend in Staten Island, New York, and said he also has extended family there. I
asked him if "the women in porn were really that good-looking, or is it just a good make-up job or camera tricks?" He said that many were really "that good-looking (also-some were very un-clean and many used heavy drugs)." I mentioned that I had grown up watching many of his films/videos. He replied simply with "I bet you did."

"Paul's dad used to manage, for many years, the original "Nathan's" hot-dog store in Coney Island, Brooklyn (where I grew up). He was a well-known, recognizable guy for millions of tourists who visited the once-famous Coney Island amusement park area.

"Paul is a stand-up guy, but obviously some substance abuse in the past has left him a little less sharp."
