German pornographer Gerd Wasmund began printing hardcore magazines in the early '70s but went bankrupt. He reentered the biz as the producer for several Lasse Braun movies made in 1976, including Country Life, Satin Party, Sex Maniacs and Sin Dreamer.

In 1977, Wasmund set up his own porn production company in Cologne called Mike Hunter. "I liked the sound and it wasn't German." He built one of Germany's biggest porn empires.

In the late '70s he made Sex Maniacs II starring Laura Martinelli. In 1983, he took a German crew to Las Vegas where he shot Las Vegas Maniacs starring Annette Haven, Richard Pacheco, John Leslie, Lisa DeLeeuw and Rhoda Joe Patty. Shot over 25 days, the film cost about $600,000. It was released in America as Sex Loose.

Bill Margold remembers it. "That's the strange murder mystery…all the actors' voices are dubbed into English."

As he was preparing to return to Germany, Wasmud received a telephone call. "We've got your soundtrack," said the anonymous voice. "You can have it back in return for a quarter of a million dollars."

"I realized then that the Mob wasn't happy with me working in the United States," says Wasmund. He refused to cave in to the blackmail. Instead he took the film to Berlin and employed American actors to redub the soundtrack.
