Mal wanted to direct but he first needed to gain experience. So under the name Carter Stevens he made the 1972 porno The Collegiates starring Harry Reems. Two years later Carter directed Lickidy Split which was Screw's number six film of 1974. It ranked amongst Variety's top 50 grossing films for 1974. One week in New York it was the city's highest grossing movie. "I lost money on Lickidy Split," says Stevens. "I worked for a flat rate.... I managed to make a couple of hudnreds bucks' profit on the fiml, but I got busted and had over $5,000 of legal expenses.... After I was arrested, the police investigated me, found out that I was not a member of the underworld, that I had no underworld ties.... They said they're weren't interested in me. They're using pornography busts to go after themob, they want the mob tie-in. They checked me out, found out that I was a legitimate businessman, and dropped the charges. We took a corporate misdemeanor, paid a $250 fine, and that was the end of it. But in the meantime I had $5000 worth of legal expenses, so I lost on that...but it established me." (Film Maker's Guide To Pornography, p. 125) "Before I got into adult, I talked it over with my mother. She wanted to know if it would hurt my career. 'What career?' I said. "My parents had liberal attitudes. My mother used to say about sex, 'When it's great it's great and when it's lousy, it ain't too bad.'" Whorb took the first part of his porn name from his first wife's middle name - Carter - while Mal's middle name is Stevens. "Gerry Damiano came from a Catholic background and his films are obsessed with guilt. I'm Jewish. We don't have that problem. You won't see obsessions with guilt in my work or that of other Jews. Damiano and I had fascinating discussions on this theme." Whorb married twice. Of his three children, two are adults. Mal has a younger sister and a younger brother who practices Orthodox Judaism. Avraham Whorb has a Masters Degree in Philosophy and has written two arcane books on Jewish theology. Carter Stevens' second wife was a stripper and occasional porn performer who used the name Baby Doe. She appears in Throat - 12 Years Later. "I met her when she came into a porno casting session I ran but decided she didn't want to do it. Still, we got to know each other..." Carter specializes in S-M. His best known flicks include Rollberbabies, Hot Oven, White Hot, Teenage Twins, Tinseltown, Punk Rock and Mount of Venus. He performed in over 50 films as well as hundreds of loops using such names as Steve Mitchell and Peter Sutinov. "Marlene Willoughby and I felt like husband and wife. We became that bored with working with each other. She was skinny while I'm big. We weren't well matched." During the 1970s and early '80s, Carter worked frequently for the Mafia's main man in porn - Robert DiBernardo. Carter's last pornographic feature film was 1982's White Hot. During the late '80s, he shot numerous bondage flicks in Europe which Bizarre distributed in America. Like other high testosterone males such as John Dough and Steve Hatcher, Carter enjoys riding motorcycles. He was hobbling around in the Spring of 1997 after an accident when I first talked with him.
