During the late '70s, Laurie served as Hustler's talent coordinator. According to rumors, Laurie only used girls from World Modeling in exchange for kickbacks from Jim South. When Althea Flynt discovered the payoffs, she fired Smith. Laurie returned to South, who lived up to his word by making her the porn star he'd long promised. "Laurie and Jim are mirror images," says a porn journalist. "They recognize the other as entirely without scruples." Smith appeared in Hustler and Chic magazines. She made her porn debut in Olympic Fever where she's billed as Kristin. A car accident in late 1979 left her sterile. "[Bill] Margold...was the first person in the business that I know of to accuse Ms. Smith of being a "bad person,"" writes ex-porno journalist Hart Williams on RAME 7/26/97. "This was in the fall of 1979. Mr. Margold was beside himself, claiming that Ms. Smith was only signing up Jim South's models when she was talent coordinator at Hustler (where I worked with her every day) and not hiring any of HIS models from REB- Sunset International. "Later, he claimed that
"Althea caughter her!" and that she was fired for taking kickbacks. I
cannot confirm THAT (Smith certainly was fired) and she went to South,
who, as they say, "made her a star." If Bill ever worked with Ms. SMith
after that, I don't know about it. He had very little dealings with South's
actors and actresses unless they "defected.""
