John Stagliano is Buttman, porn's most influential director.

"I met Stagliano back in 1973," remembers Bill Margold. "He was in a constant state of heat and still is. When he entered the XRCO Hall of Fame, he said that Margold told me to do everything, not just one thing. John makes me proud."

John denies saying anything such thing.

Buttman is the most beloved male in the biz, says Margold. "I'm the most hated. John's the male version of Nina Hartley."

Bill believes that John's popularity will only climb as he struggles with AIDS. He tested HIV Positive in February, 1997. "He'll be porn's Magic Johnson. He'll outlive us all."

The same day that US News and World Report hit the stands with its "Business of Porn cover story", Stagliano found out he was HIV positive.

Eric Schlosser begins his article with three lengthy paragraphs on Buttman.

"John Stagliano is a wealthy entrepreneur, a self-made man whose rise to the top could happen only in America. Raised in a conservative, Midwestern household, Stagliano read the books of Ayn Rand and was greatly influenced by their heroes, rugged individualists willing to defy conventional opinion...

"Today, Stagliano is the nation's leading director of hardcore videos, a porn auteur whose distinctive cinema verite style of filmmaking has been widely imitated... Stagliano shoots without a crew, edits the film hijmself, and performs in them. He also is a major contributor to the Cato Institute, a well-known think tank in Washington D.C., where he regularly discusses policy issues with its economists." (US News 2/10/97)

Stagliano's company, Evil Angel Video, sold about half a million videos last year. One subject that Eric's article doesn't discuss and wasn't publicly known - John's active bisexuality. Most people thought Buttman was only into female butts.

"I admire guys who can swing from both sides of the plate," says Bill Margold about men like Stagliano and Jamie Gillis. "Fifty per cent of the men in this business have had a cock in their mouth or had their cock in some other guy's mouth. Working in sex encourages bisexuality. As James Dean said: "Why go through life with one hand tied behind your back."

Patrick Collins, who worked for John for years before the two split in 1996, evidently knew of John's sexual tastes. In the January, 1997 issue of AVN, Patrick talks about their breakup. "I don't want people to think that John is coming off like a jilted lover... I hope this doesn't impact our sexual relationship. I am not ashamed to say that sex with Victor [Evil Angel sales manager] and John was one of the highlights of my life. Victor, at 220 pounds, is much gentler than John, and a lot less needy."

Margold: "Johnny has a little boy charm. I tell people that "This is a legend." And he blushes and says "No, I'm not."

"Stagliano validated the video camera. He took it out on the street where it belongs.

"He and Brandy Alexandre lived together as boyfriend and girlfriend. Then they broke up and Brandy says he ripped her off. But Brandy will always love John. She just didn't always like him."

The photo of Stagliano that appears in US News was shot at John's luxurious home in Malibu. Formerly belonging to singer Jimmy Buffet, the house overlooks the Pacific Ocean.

"No sooner had the magazine article hit the stands proclaiming him king," writes Gene Ross in the April, 1997 issue of AVN, "than Stagliano's status on the chessboard plummeted with the shocking revelations about his HIV status. The internet, thanks to an industry gossip monger named Luke F-rd, had already begun rushing to judgement well before any facts were in.

"Of his condition, Stagliano offers neither profound apologies nor excruciating details, except to say he believes his condition is a direct result of a sex episode that occurred in Brazil last year. It involved a transsexual. The gravity of the situation was sufficient to prompt Stagliano to test for results he felt were inevitable. But he also admits this wasn't a virgin flight."

"I've been f---ed in the ass before," says John. "I wanted to try it again. I'm not a conservative person. If there's something I want to do, I do it."

Stagliano says he had "a death wish that evening." He felt obsessed with creating a situation where he "made an irresponsible choice."

John denies the US News statement that his videos cost $8000 to produce. "That happened one time. It was a Buttman 'big tit' feature. I wish it were the case for all my features, but it isn't."

Two 1997 releases from Evil Angel create additional questions about John. He performs with Ruby - who says "Nobody eats ass like John Stagliano" - in Rock N' Roll Rocco and with Kay London in Butt Row. Stagliano says the scenes were shot months before his Brazilian tryst.

In January, 1997, John played around with porn newcomer Kristina St. James, with the busty blonde giving him head and Buttman eating her out.

St. James, who was discovered by the Bogas Brothers, suffered guilt by association.

As soon as the news of John's HIV status got around, people talked about Kristina's intimate moments with the Evil Angel owner.

Due to play the role of Debbie's mother in the 1997 Vivid production Debbie Does Dallas, Kristina was dismissed on the set. Director Paul Thomas says Tony Tedeschi refused to work with her.

Kristina's tests show her to be HIV negative.

Born around 1951, Stagliano says he's been a porno fan all of his life. "I started jerking off to pictures of Raquel Welch in a bikini in PAGEANT magazine when I was 15. I'd come home for lunch during eighth grade, lock myself in the family bathroom and jerk off everyday.

"Also, I'd ride my bicycle to the newsstands three or four miles away, inside Chicago. I lived in the suburb just outside Evergreen Park. I'd bike to 63rd and Ashland, just on the border of the black neighborhoods, back in the '60s when it was still dangerous, just to get magazines to jerk off to. I remember off to see Sandy, the Reluctant Nature Girl, which was an old nudist-camp movie and one of the arousing experiences of my life, and jerking off in the theater under my coat.

"I got caught jerking off a few times, and once I was arrested [in an adult theater on Hollywood Boulevard]. If you watch Shadow Dancers, the whole experience is recounted.

"I like to beat off to Tail Ends and other bottom fetish magazines.

"I enjoy looking at a girl's ass more than I enjoy actually doing anything. I get turned-on if I put my finger in a girl's asshole, and I really enjoy licking asses and burying my face in girls' asses." (Hustler)

Stagliano graduated high school in 1969. In 1972, he moved to Los Angeles at age 20 to study at UCLA. Wanting to become an economist, he had no intention of gettting into the entertainment field. "I didn't even know that Hollywood was in Los Angeles. The closest to any artistic motivation I'd had was taking modern dance in Chicago, motivated by the chance to watch girls in leotards.

"Once I got out here, I got sidetracked," John writes on his Evil Angel internet site. "I answered an ad at the UCLA Placement Center looking for models. They wanted girls but I met the agent and he also edited a porno newspaper. I wrote a porno story for the paper. After that he sent me on softcore modeling jobs which I wrote stories about. I did my first hardcore moie in 1974 - an 8mm loop. In the '70s I did a few movies while I worked part-time for market research companies."

In 1979 John read an ad in Daily Variety for male stripers at Chippendales. Stagliano says that all the other guys in his first show were gay, which allowed him premium access to the women.

In 1982 John published a porno mag on newsprint, doing three issues called HEAT, two called ANGEL and one called HOT SLUT ORGIES.

The next year he started working adult videos with Bruce Seven. His first video, Bouncing Butts, starred Stacy Donovan.

In 1985, John made a 30-minute tape How To Enlarge Your Penis. Scott Taylor inserts his penis into a clear plastic tube about 15 inches long which is attached to a pump.

"You need grease on your prick to create a vacuum," says Scott. "The pump will stretch your cock a mile, but it won't hurt. I pump twice a week. It feels great. See it growing! I can feel the blood rushing into all the capillaries."

In 1989 John started my own company Evil Angel. "When I stripped, the MC called me Evil John to distinguish me from another guy named John. Also, I had a nasty girlfriend called Angel...

"I'm this guy with a degree in economics who wanted to do more intellectual things but because of his dick, got stuck moving in this other direction. I'd watched porno for years and was always frustrated with the camerawork.

"A salesman for a video company described this scene to me that looks like it's for an amateur movie, but then the camera becomes an entity in the movie. At the same time, I was thinking about doing a buns fetish movie... I wanted to incorporate this technique I'd seen in European porno still picture layouts where the girls look into the camera seductively... I put these elements together and invented Buttman.

"In porn, the best stuff happens when you get spontaneous and real things happen. That's why I'm successful. I show spontaneous sex and people want to see real sex. They don't want to see these stupid, staged things where people can't act.

"Camerawork on a porno set is difficult. You're shooting a lot of stuff in a hurry. It's like shooting a live performance that you know has to be edited. So I shoot a lot, and then put a lot of time into the editing.

AVN 2/94: "As the focus of the company's [Stagliano's Evil Angel] shifted from Stagliano's avocation - dance - to his true passion - the female butt - the popularity of EA went stratospheric."

"Lots of people like butts," says Stagliano. "Those who are into assholes, into licking and f---ing assholes, tend to be sexual people..."

The wild ride began with The Adventures of Buttman in late 1989. Stagliano's alter ego became the most popular and most imitated characters in porn.

"The butts used to be undervalued," says Stagliano. "Other films with anal themes didn't even have lingering butt shots. While jerking off to porn movies, I always thought there should be more butt shots. After becoming Buttman, I was even more obsessed."

A series of loops that connects in an odd way, The Adventures of Buttman ranked as porn's most influential production since Deep Throat. "Sensuous...Great skin tones, even with dyed blondes in bright sunlight....You don't know what is coming next as person after person is spied on. A different, sensual feature with excellent sex, plus a you-are-there feeling." (AFW 96 D. p. 247)

Until 1989, even the most low-budget porno attempted to make a movie, but after Adventures of Buttman it became ok to take the camera off the tripod and shoot reality. Those following in Stagliano's footsteps include Seymore Butts, Ed Powers, Philmore Butts, and Max Hardcore.

In 1991's American Buttman in London Stagliano joins his friend Rocco in Britain "on another erotic journey where English bottoms are marveled at, sought after and screwed till the boys are sated." (AFW 96 p.247)

The original Bend Over Babes appeared in 1990. "Buttman goes around with his home video camera and goofy sense of humor and takes pictures of girls butts. It's amazing how a simple approach to movie making can be so effective and steamy. Stagliano is smart enough to blend the softcore aspect with some ball-breaking hardcore footage." (AFW 96 D. p.249)

Bend Over Babes II appeared in 1991. "You've got to love Stagliano. He's unassuming, gentle and horny. And the hand-held camerawork keeps you interested at all times. No fast-forwarding needed here." (AFW 96D. p. 249)

Bend Over Babes III appeared in 1992. "Buttman's on the prowl again, going from Las Vegas back to his college and stopping off at the beach. He picks up women and gets them to pose, undress and have sex in myriad positions. First-rate f--- and suck footage in the Buttman style, with a tease scene here and there to boot." (AFW p.

249)

The Best of Buttman appeared in 1991. "John Stagliano hosts a dizzying array of new footage, favorite unseen moments and the erotic highlights of his much-lauded Buttman movies. If you like butts, this is rear heaven. Even those who are indifferent may find themselves converted into ass men forever after Stagliano narrates a stroker's paradise of porn bits and pieces and plenty of pud-stiffening scenes where we learn not only how he arrived at the Buttman character (Tracey Adams' ass was the inspiration) but see his camera style and directorial approach evolve." (AFW 96 D. p. 249)

Bend Over Brazilian Babes appeared in 1993. "John Stagliano and Rocco join forces with South American muscle stud Felipe for a journey through his continent where big butts go hand in hand with horny, cute and sexy women. The guys' feelings about women are so heartfelt, you never get bored hearing them say, "Oh my God!" or when they can't resist touching one of those large bums in a tight skirt. The women they choose to sleep with are all sexy and hot in their own way." (AFW 96 p.249)

Critic Patrick Riley has a different view. "Stagliano is on his Brazilian kick again, roving the streets and beaches of Rio and Sao Paulo and picking up ugly hookers. Boy, are they ugly; Whoopi Goldberg look-a-likes." (X-Rated Videotape Guide 4, p. 97)

Other Stagliano flicks include Butt Freak, Buttman Back in Rio and Buttman's Ultimate Workout. "His style is an unusual combination of childlike innocence and X-rated action," writes Harris Gaffin. "His point of view is like a lost kid's and audiences identify with it. Low angle, looking up, just as he might have done at the age of his first sexual sensation."

Mystic Pieces appeared in 1989. "A struggling screenwriter (Stagliano) deals with personal and business relationships as he tries to come up with the classic sex script. The story gets murky, but the nut-busting sex is crystal clear." (AFW 96D p. 261)

Shadow Dancers I & II appeared in 1990. In the original, "John Stagliano wanders the strip club circuit, searching for his former dance partner. He eventually finds her at Shadow Dancer's nightclub, a den of forbidden sensuality. We're taken through a Dante's inferno of torrid couplings that prove to be Stagliano's most intoxicating fusion of dance, tease, and volcanic sex yet: a masterpiece of unbridled eroticism." (AFW 96D. p. 267)

Buttman In The Crack lasts 140 glorious minutes. "Buttman follows a statuesque redhead (Ruby) and, camera in hand, gets sucked into the crack of her awesome behind. There he finds a strange world of oddball characters and wall to wall sex." (AFW 97D)

While John makes consistently long movies, the longest X-flick ever is Cecil Howard's The Last X-rated Movie which is seven minutes short of four hours.

John says that Hollywood shows too much nudity. "If you're focused on a dramatic story, showing skin doesn't work. It makes people squirm. People are there for another purpose. I know that my purpose is to get guys off.

"I do better movies on video because I have more control over what's going on... Now I shoot on Hi-8 all the time and post on 3/4"...

"Francis Ford Coppola says filmmaking is art, and not related to budget. That some girl in Ohio, with a little camera, is going to make the next great thing. I like that."

Some people blame John Stagliano for a decline in porn quality during the '90s. Douglas Swalen listed on RAME his porn dislikes:

"1. Boob jobs-- Obviously this is a no brainer. So many girls these days have been enhanced, it's pathetic. And they've been badly enhanced. Even more maddening is girls who are already endowed and STILL get one (Celeste, Zoryna Dreams, Amber Lynn, Jordan McKnight). Very few girls'

implants do anything for me. Kitty Young and Staci Valentine are exceptions for me, but they're in the very tiny minority. Maybe that's why I like European X more these days. The girls are by and large natural.

"2. Money shots-- I know there is a demand out there for semen splattered faces, but I'm not in that group. Obviously blow jobs are the exception to this. But how many guys out there take the time to exit their partner

at the height of orgasm, scramble over to their partner's face and shoot their load? I'll bet it's a small group. So why the need for this stuff. I realize that way back in "the day" cum shots were used to prove that they guy was actually getting off, but now the novelty is long since gone and it's a dime a dozen. But it's still the mandatory end for any sex scene (I'm having a flashback to the movie "Exposed" with John Leslie when in the final scene he's making it with his girlfriend on a porn set and the director screams, "He came inside her! s---! We have to

shoot this again!") Personally, I could do without another "turn and blast" scene for the rest of my life.

"3. Genital shots vs. reaction shots - Back in the good old days the emphasis was more on full body or reaction shots vs. closeups of the guy pounding away. These days it's not uncommon to have long closeup shots interspersed with short reaction shots and maybe if you're lucky a full body shot. I've timed some of these closeup shots and frequently they

run a minute or longer. I really can't fathom why this is. Ten seconds is more than ample time IMHO. Anything more is boring.

"4. Overlong blow jobs. This is getting rediculous. Some of these oral scenes (with either the guy or the girl doing the blowing) last longer than the actual sex scene. We get five to 10 minutes of oral and then four to five minutes of actual sex (consisting of the above mentioned overlong genital shots).

"5. Gross anal--I know there's a demand for Max Hardcore and his ilk, but I am not one of them. I see nothing redeeming at all about seeing some poor girl upside down on her neck with a gaping dilated asshole while the guy puts his prick in, pulls it out, puts it back in, then pulls it

out, etc, etc, ad nauseum. I am no prude (after seeing 10,000 plus XXX movies over the last fifteen years, I think its pretty safe to say that I definitely don't fall into that category). But I consider this kind of dreck to be repulsive...right up there with the "bizarre" crap that

comes out of Germany and France (to this day I'm still flabbergasted at what Jeannie Pepper did in movies like "Goldwater").

"6. Lame kissing scenes--Okay, in this day of AIDS, kissing in this industry is probably a bad idea. But if you're going to do it, at least make it look like you want to. This "let's touch tounges for five seconds then strip" is just laughable. I'd rather see no kissing at all than this.

"7. Overlong sex scenes--Some of these scenes run twenty minutes or more. I have to assume this is done for economical reasons. It's easier and cheaper to have four girls in a film do long scenes, then say six or more do shorter scenes. Ever since the late 80's the scenes have gotten longer but nothing is done to enhance the increased length. Indeed, the number of different positions used hasn't changed. It's still three or less on average. Sometimes it's only one. Boring...

"8. Complete nakedness--Back in the Golden Age directors knew that sometimes a little clothing went a long way. These days stars can't wait to rip off everything (and frequently it's done off camera) I'm not saying that only the organs should be exposed, but I find something titilating about people not removing everything at once. In Europe things are more along those lines.

"I'm not even going to comment on the overabundance of G/G scenes or the bad lighting, poor sound, and lousy cinematography that all to frequently make up the majority of X these days. I guess I'm a Golden Age man...."

Brad Williams: "Yeah, too bad it's gone. That was the price paid for the much more convenient and pleasant experience of watching porn on the VCR. Of course, the only thing stopping people today from making GA-type material is money, lack of talented performers, lack of directors who

know what they are doing, people who take pride in their work, companies that can see more than 2 weeks ahead of time, critical assessments in magazines that review movies... I remember the total disgust and revolt of Adam Film World in their reviews over the lousiness when post-GA porn started, but they unfortunately abandoned it pretty quickly. Guess they lost too much ad revenue from

telling the truth."

Swalen: "The early post GA erotica still had hope. It wasn't until the late 80's that the last semblances of a storyline and good direction went to the wall. I really have to blame Stagliano for this. I know he didn't set

out to destroy porn. He was a man with an obsession and his "Buttman" tapes were great. It's just his success paved the way for the "wall to wall" sex tapes with no real storylines. Couple that with Vivid's degeneration (though every now and again they put out a winner) and you

wind up with the dreck we now have to sift through."

Peter Van Aarle: "I feel I have to defend John Stagliano here. It's true that his successful Buttman series spawned a whole host of imitators, in fact it (probably together with Powers' Debutante tapes) spawned a whole new movie type now commonly referred to as Gonzo.

"But, he is NOT directly to blame for plotless wall to wall sextapes. This trend started earlier, back in the mid 80's (86/87 or so) when the first signs of the present glut of movies started. Before there still was a fairly large number of videos and films with plots (just look at some of the good stuff made in 1984 or 85). But soon more and more wall-to-wall sex tapes started flooding the market since producers found these would sell anyway, so why bother putting in any semblance of plot."

Ron Yamuchi: "Powers is probably more responsible for the glut of amateur, pro-am, and pseudo-am tapes. I find his stuff plotless and wall-to-wall, obviously, but he is just as clearly a man infatuated with sex and at least a little bit respectful of (perhaps awed by is more accurate) his talent. Compare his cheeky, self-deprecating, downright nerdy demeanour with that of the real avatar of gonzo, Max Hardcore. MH is the one with the major impact on the genre today, in my view.

"Plot is great in movies that are coherently edited, and performed by people able to utter dialogue plausibly. And plot added heat, when skillfully integrated into the sex action; consider Cafe Flesh, or to a lesser degree, something like Neon Nights.

"However, time and budget pressure means that there are few actors in the biz, and not much can be done to get a meaningful acting job out of them. So why not go wall-to-wall? I think that's a more honest and reasonable

approach to the work than to have your performers embarrass themselves with trying to act, when there is little or no quality in the dialogue, theme, etc. We don't need to see more lame parodies of hit movies or soap operas.

"Perhaps there is a middle ground, though. Instead of trying to make mini-movies, with a concomittant requirement for expensive (and in my view extraneous) sets, costumes, props, and such, directors and producers trying to bring a quality experience to this medium should be trying to

make theatre, which requires only minimal staging and a few lights to be effective. There are a lot of things that you can do with this idea -- monologues, improvs, comedy, live audiences, sound effects, mime, odd lighting (eg. flashlights playing over the body) -- that would bring a

new, fresh perspective on the the ol' f--- flick. And it won't cost money, just some imagination."

Faceman911: "I think the reason multiple facials, hard anal sex, ass to mouth, etc. is so popular is because most porn viewers seem to be the exact opposite of you and your wife. They want to see the type of sex that they can't get at home. I don't know about the rest of you, but I've never (purposely) come all over a girl's face. In her mouth, yeah, but that's different.

"I know what you mean though. It's refreshing to hear someone say that normal sex doesn't have to be boring to watch; a lot of people aren't happy with porn sex unless it involves like circus midgets climbing into the girl's vagina or something."

Here are a few paragraphs from a lengthy essay in the 11/22/97 Guardian - a left wing British newspaper:

The pioneer and undisputed king of high-volume, low-budget porn videos is John Stagliano, aka Buttman. Although he's now semi-retired, Stagliano is still America's leading porn director, an auteur with dozens of titles and millions of sales under his belt. He's even got two separate websites through which you can order photos and hard-core videos of `babes with big butts'. In 1989, Stagliano and his business partner Patrick Collins founded Evil Angel, and started casting, shooting, editing, copying, distributing and marketing their own distinctive porn movies. Their style has since been much copied, but they moved quickly enough to capitalise on it first.

A typical Buttman movie - there is no crew, and Stagliano does the editing himself - costs around $8,000 to make, and can earn him more than $250,000. At Evil Angel's offices, dozens of VCRs are running every day, as hundreds of tapes are copied for distribution. Made on shoestring budgets, shot with hand-held camcorders and featuring Stagliano himself as Buttman, these films quickly defined a new genre: the `gonzo' movie.

While they lack anything that resembles a plot, gonzo movies do provide their protagonists with some kind of activity leading up to sex. This is not so much for dramatic purposes as to induce some semblance of authenticity (regular themes include the gym and the dance class), which remains so crucial to viewer enjoyment. We want to believe, apparently, that the actresses involved really are enjoying the multiple penetrations, and not merely going through the motions. Most convey the impression that they thoroughly enjoy their work.

John Stagliano's is a typical American success story, with one exception. Having made his fortune and become, perhaps, the most influential figure in his field, in February this year he made a confession that rocked the entire porn industry - following unprotected sex with a transsexual at the Rio carnival, he had tested positive for HIV, the Aids virus. Stagliano, who is taking protease inhibitor drugs and has not developed Aids, refused to be interviewed in person for this article, saying he wanted to conserve his energy while he decided on his future.

When he did come to the phone, it was only to deny that the decision to go public about his HIV-positive status was inspired by any sense of public duty or altruistic intention. `Even if I'd wanted to, I couldn't have kept it secret. People talk all the time in this business, so it was only a matter of time before it came out. I figured it was better to tell people myself than have rumours going around.'

***

On 5/4/98, John Stagliano left a message on Luke F-rd's voice mail. "I've read the stuff that you sent to my assistant Jeff, in regards to the interview that you wanted to do with me, And I just didn't like the stuff that you wrote. I didn't think it was accurate and I didn't want to do the interview. That is still my position. I want to make that clear. I don't have time to give interviews to everybody. I do have criteria. If you want to send me some stuff that might change my mind, I am open to that."

Buttman Confidential 2

HIV positive John Stagliano talks about getting f---ed in the ass and catching HIV in his recent release Buttman Confidential 2. From the review at www.cavr.com: "John looking at movies & jerking. She-male footage. Max Hardcore footage. Grainy footage. John giving she-male head briefly, getting head. John rims her. Fingers her ass. John gives her head. John says this is the confidential part. Talks about HIV & getting screwed in the ass."

Other male gonzo makers, aside from Stagliano, enjoy sex with he-shes. Luke estimates that about half of the heterosexual male talent pool has indulged in homosexual sex.

Also in the tape, John talks about his past loves Kristi Lynn and Brandy Alexandre, recently fired from the Forest Lawn Mortuary in Glendale where she'd worked for three years. Forest Lawn recently found out that Brandy had been a porn star.

Recog writes on RAME about Buttman Confidential 2:

I just watched most of the two part Buttman Confidential, and I had to force myself to stay awake on this one. If you plan on renting this two part 4 hour long feature, I would strongly suggest that you indulge in some sort of chemical substance abuse immediately prior to viewing. I have not smoked anything since college, and I suspect that my sobriety hindered my enjoyment of this video. Themes: Stagliano jacking off, Stagliano's life story complete with the "Buttman" philosophy on life, Anal Sex

Scene One Video opens with a fleshy, female with short black hair. John sits on the floor jacking off, showing us closeups of the woman's cottage cheese ass for approximately 15 minutes. During this time, Buttman repeatedly places his hands on the woman's buttocks, and rubs his face on her but while he jacks himself off. No actual sex here at all, and unless you are immediately captivated by this womans derriere, I suggest you fast forward.

Scene Two- Hopefully you heeded my advice and took some hallucinogenic drugs since you will enjoy the next fifteen minutes. Buttman finds several old videotapes, mostly German and a few from some company called Andalusan(SP) in houston, and proceeds to watch them. The camera captures the images as they play on his monitor, and in hindsight all these videos look like they would be alot more interesting that the one I am currently renting. We are next treated to a bizarre kaleidoscope effect of Nikki Anderson private parts. The overall effect was pretty cool at first, but after the first two minutes, it got pretty old to my sober mind.

Scene 3 Buttman in Budapest with Christophe Clark, Nikki Anderson, and a brunette with large natural breasts. We get about five minutes of bum shots, complete with Buttman pawing the girls stocking covered asses. Best line of comes when Buttman asked Christophe to tear a hole in the Brunettes stocking , Christophe does so with his teeth, opening up her genital region, but first says softly,"It's me" to the girl before doing so. Which brings up my whole problem with this video, namely that Buttman's style requires direct interaction between him and the girls. However, because of his HIV status, he can not penetrate the girls, instead he can only grope and pinch at them. If the desired effect was to make Buttman seem a somewhat pitiful character, then he succeeded. The rest of this scene is pretty standard Christophe style anal f---ing, and was pretty good. After this I nodded off, so I missed anything that might of transpired in the remainder of tape , and inserted tape two.

Tape Two Here we have Buttman watching more of the old Joey Silvera videos, and jacking off to them. During this time we are treated to his personal philosophy. We finally get into the sex with a hot brunette in Budapest, with a standin stud. The girl is gorgeous and has that natural tan skin which looks gorgeous year round. Sex starts with the guy fingering her. He gets two fingers in and is pumping pretty vigorously. Then a quick cut, to a blow job for him and some pussy liking for her. A quick cowgirl follows, then followed by finger insertions into her pussy by the guy. We get good closeups of his fingers going in, we get up to two fingers and then cut away to some standard doggie style vaginal f---ing. Somehow, I am left with the feeling that they may have been more fingers in that one, but not in my edit. Then follows a little anal, thankfully without condoms.

The guy in question has a big pigmentation spot on his dick, where one area is noticeably lighter than the others, which is a little distracting, but is a competent swordsman. As an aside, the thing that keeps standing out in the European videos is the smaller cock size of the studs, compared to our standard American swordsmen. The scene ends with a blow job and a facial. Not many gaping anals in this one, so I am slightly disappointed in this scene. John is back watching his old videos and jacking off, smoking his pipe and reminiscing about Kristi Lynn. Then follows what looks like scat tapes from Andulasan videos. We are teased but we don't see anything. Next is the same girl with we see at the opening with short black hair. A guy comes in, does some tricks with a wooden walking can, and then he and the girl start to f---. No anal, and it was fast forward thru this baby for me. Back to John in his room watching porno jacking off. He may have said something very deep here, but it was fast forward for me.

Next comes the very graining scene of him and the Brazilian TV, with brief glimpses of him giving the TTV a BJ. The entire scene is shown in reverse. You see the cars on the street traveling in reverse which again leads me to believe that the scene was probably geared for the altered states crowd. The TV was a pretty boyish blond btw. John shows closeup of her/his ass. and gets a blow job from her/him. John gives her/him a rimjob in hallway.Focus fades in and out and the whole thing is again very grainy, but in terms of shock value, well, let us just say if Rob Black wants to top it, he will have to bottom for Tom Byron.

Next we have Buttman discussing Kristi Lynn in detail, and more of his philosophy of life Last scene is the hottest girl in the tape, a gorgeous german blond. German shows up from an escort agency. We have the standard Buttman stroke her through her clothes thing, but surprise he actually fingers and gets a blowjob from this one. No actual penetration by him, except with dildos . The chick by the way has the most awesome breasts I have seen in a long time. Some pretty nice close ups of her pussy as well, making this the best scene of the entire tape.I can't decide if the tits are fake or real, but I love the way her nipples protrude. This girl is hot, and HIV+ or not, I want to see more of her. I think this is Jessika.. No sign of heaven here, just some rundown, imitation white clouds.

From the February, 2001 issue of Talk, an article by Martin Amis:

With vaginal [sex], Stagliano elaborated...you have some chick chirruping away. And the genuinely discerning viewer (jacknifed over his flying fist) has got to be thinking: Is this for real? Or is it just bulls---?

With anal, on the other hand, the actress is obliged to produce a different order of response: more guttural, more animal. As Stagliano quaintly put it, "Her personality comes out."

"Rocco has far more power in this industry than any actress... I was the first to shoot Rocco. Togetehr we evolved toward rougher stuff. He started to spit on girls. A strong, male-dominant thing, with women being pushed to their limit. It looks like violence but it's not. I mean, pleasure and pain are the same thing, right? Rocco is driven by the market. What makes it in today's marketplace is reality."

Tricia Devereaux Gives Birth

InsideAdult.com reports: "Tricia Devereaux and her new daughter go home March 6. Kabella was delivered by Caeserian section March 3, weighing 4 lb., 9 oz. Both mother and daughter are reported doing just fine."

The father of Tricia's child is Elegant Angel owner John Stagliano. Both Stagliano and Devereaux are HIV positive.

John Stagliano Alleges I Called His Woman Tricia A 'Heroin Addict'

4/10/05

John Stagliano is still telling people that I called his woman (John does not believe in marriage) Tricia Devereaux a heroin addict.

After seven years of him and Tricia propounding this lie, I've decided to hold them and myself accountable to the evidence and investigate who's lying here.

I recall alleging no such thing. I have no evidence of such a thing. I can find no evidence that I ever did such a thing.

I check her l-keford.com profile and find no mention of heroin. I check my 1998 posts on rec.arts.movies.erotica (RAME) and find no such allegation on my part. I've never asked Google to remove any of my old newsgroup postings and the good, the bad and the ugly things I wrote in the heat of the moment are still available for anyone to view.

I check web.archive.org and can find no such allegation.

In a May 3, 2000 chat on ADT, Tricia Devereaux said: "Luke F-rd is an asshole and I don't care if he does read this. He has no business making judgements of people or twisting people's words around. After I got HIV, he accused me of doing heroin, prostituting, etc. I threatened to sue, and he laid off."

I never got any legal threat from Tricia or those representing her. I can find no evidence that I ever accused her of doing heroin or prostitution. I'm sure I said or wrote that those were questions that needed to be asked of her and any porn star who comes down with HIV. I never laid off my reporting on Tricia.

I did make one horrendous mistake in my reporting on the 1997-98 HIV-outbreak. In April 1998, I named someone as HIV-positive who wasn't. Within an hour of this mistake, I published a retraction on my website and notified the moderators of RAME about my mistake.

I'm sure that when Tricia tested positive for HIV in January 1998, the logical first reaction from me or any thinking person was that she caught HIV either through unprotected anal sex or through the use of dirty needles. Those are the two primary ways of transmitting HIV.

It's never been proved, to the best of my knowledge, how Tricia caught HIV, though she did do an unprotected anal scene with HIV-positive Marc Wallice a few weeks before her infection (like seven other girls who came down HIV-positive in 1997 and 1998).

When there is no reliable information on a matter of grave concern (such as how Tricia and other porn stars in 1997 and 1998 came down with HIV), there's always going to be a flow of gossip to fill the information gap. The best way to stem speculation is with facts. In this case, the industry had a desperate need to know how Tricia (and later Brooke Ashley, Caroline, and Kimberly Jade) caught the deadly disease, and when no facts were brought forward, people whose lives were on the line (and those who were interested in them) were desperate to understand what was going on and were manufacturing scenarios to explain the outbreak.

You can't become a porn star, catch a deadly disease, and then make a convincing claim for privacy. As Bill Margold says, "When your privates become public, you become public." People who publicly make their living through having sex are going to face public scrutiny of their private lives when they catch deadly diseases that can be transmitted through unprotected sex or the sharing of needles.

The closest thing I can find to what John Stagliano alleges is this quote I got from Brooke Ashley 7/11/98:

"I remember Sharon Mitchell saying that Tricia Devereaux did not get it from the business. Many of the people who said that she did heroin [with needles], they've now [in the light of the revelations about Marc Wallice] retracted. I've never known her to do any IV drugs. She has admitted doing ecstasy…"

On 6/18/98, I talked to Joey Silvera. Here are excerpts:

Luke: People were probably doing drugs to get this latest HIV.

Joey: I've heard that, man. I can tell you 100% that there is zero evidence [of what caused the HIV outbreak].

Luke: Tricia Devereaux and Brooke Ashley were thought to use drugs.

Joey: Was it ever substantiated? It's all, she said, he said… They [the five performers who tested HIV positive in 1998] have all said that they didn't know where they got it.

In my question to Joey, I referred to widespread industry speculation that Brooke and Tricia used drugs, but I never specified what type of drugs and I didn't allege that either of them were addicts.

I searched the Google archive of newsgroups using the relevant terms and couldn't find anything that substantiates John's complaints.

Based on my research, I am positive that I never alleged that Tricia Devereaux was a heroin addict (as her husband John Stagliano still claims I did). Based on what Brooke Ashley says, many of Tricia's peers did initially make unsubstantiated claims that she was a drug/heroin addict as a way of explaining her HIV-infection.

I've tried several times over the years to interview John and Tricia. They've always refused. Right after John Stagliano tested HIV-postive in February 1997, I left repeated messages with his office. He never called back.

Based on my research, I conclude that the person in this case who is making false allegations is John Stagliano (and Tricia Devereaux).

JMT writes: "Blame it on Brad [Williams]. If you search the rec.arts.movies.erotica archive on Google for the phrases "Tricia inject herself" and "'Tricia Devereaux' well-known IV drug user," you will see who was the one spreading the rumor."

RAME moderator Brad Williams wrote 2/7/98: "I had heard a few days before it appeared here that Tricia Devereaux was HIV+ and a well-known IV drug user..."

Here is another link to this 1998 unsubstantiated internet allegation about Tricia.

There were certainly people talking on the internet and elsewhere, inside the industry and outside, about the possibility of Tricia having a drug problem, but I was never the one propounding this. Yet, for some reason, John and Tricia, for years have wanted to believe that I was the one spreading this nasty rumor about Tricia. This tells you more about what John and Tricia want to believe about me, despite the evidence, than it does about what I reported on Tricia.

John likes to think of himself as very rational and swayed by empirical evidence but I suspect that here he will continue to advocate his lies against all evidence, and it will be a cold day in hell before I ever get an apology from him on this matter.

Injecting Heroin

I have never seen Tricia Devereaux inject drugs nor have I ever alleged (either privately or in print) that she has.

When Tricia tested positive for HIV in 1998, however, many people in and around porn rationally wondered how she got the deadly disease. There are two most likely sources for HIV-transmission -- unprotected anal sex and the sharing of dirty needles.

To this day, Tricia and John Stagliano maintain that I printed and publicized the rumor that Tricia injected heroin. I can find no evidence to support their assertion. Therefore, I say that they are lying. I doubt I'll ever get an apology from them.

I know they've been saying this about me for years and I've just ignored their accusations. Who wants to fight back against people who caught HIV?

I normally ignore it when people lie about me. Then on Sunday I snapped and decided this matter would be better dealt with head-on. Now the matter has spread to XPT.

I think part of the reason this rumor circulated about Tricia and other girls who do extreme porn is that it is hard to imagine why any girl would subject herself to such abuse unless she was warped by drugs or something.

I am not arguing that a girl has to be warped by drugs to do extreme porn. I'm arguing that it is rational to expect many people to look at things this way.

During the early part of the 1990s, there was heroin-chic in mainstream fashion and this look also translated into porn. One did not have to take heroin to be part of the heroin-chic craze.

Da Burglar writes on XPT (and he claims no first-hand evidence that Tricia injected drugs):

Tricia was hot during her heyday, exhibiting a debauched gothic heroin decadence that worked really well in her porn scenes.

I remember her [Tricia Devereaux] from the mid 90s. One consistent thing stuck out in her scenes. Tricia was almost always SWEATING profusely and always PALE. Anyone remember Her Gangbang Girl stint with Chloe (who admits she was strung out on heroin during that period) and 15 Anabolic Penis Zombies? The scene was shot outside on a cool, overcast day.....The penis zombies, who were doing all the work, seem cool and hardly breaking a sweat. Tricia and Chloe were sweating profusely 11 minutes into the scene...

The Mid 90's saw a huge boom in Heroin use in general (and NO, it wasn't cuz of Tarantino's Pulp Fiction.) I personally know 4 former friends, business partners and / or classmates who derailed cuz of their love of JUNK. In 1996, in a span of 8 months, One chick (MBA, fairly hot but uptight) went from a $185K Marketing Executive Position in South San Fran to screwing visiting Japanese businessmen for $300 a pop, stealing CDs 2 at a time from friends (like me), living in a van and eating Skittles morning noon and night. She was able to remain strangely funcitonal in spite of her use, and during times when she had plenty of dope, she still looked and acted kinda normal, including a relationship with a sometimes-dopefiend boyfriend. In the end after 2 years, however, just before "the family intervention," she was always pale and always sweating.

Random writes:

Life definitely gave her a fierce kick in the crotch, no doubt. I have no clue about the heroin accusation, though with this biz nothing would surprise me.

I've got no qualms with her. She seems like a decent person. Of course I'm just basing this on posts from ADT, but she's always seemed nice and reasonable.

Apparently she's well (at least regarding her HIV condition), married to a very rich man and has a healthy daughter. She seems to be doing great given the unfortunate circumstances Wallice appearently caused.

Smiling Arab writes:

That whole era predates me, but the whole thing seems hazy anyway and Luke is probably the only one that remembers with any precision. But I think it went something like:

1. Luke printed that Wallice was HIV+.

2. Everyone denied, Luke retracted.

3. Wallice tested positive. AIM released a test that Wallice had gotten from some hokey clinic to prove that he hadn't been knowingly working while HIV+. Showing their competance, AIM didn't notice that it was actually the test of a middle-aged female.

4. Between #2 and #3, rumors were spreading like contagion. I think I recall reading about a year ago that Tricia accused Sharon Mitchell of helping to spread the more lacivious ones about Tricia.

5. After #3, Luke went down to AIM for a big hug session with Margold and Sharon. This probably conflated Luke with the two of them in her or her husband's mind.

I've picked this all up second hand, so feel free to correct if something is out of place or not included. Da Burglar can probably attest, intravenous use is hardcore and wasn't really a staple of '90s addiction until people went around the bend on it. There was actually a myth back then that you couldn't get hooked if you just inhaled (chasing the dragon) and stayed away from needles altogether. Of course, for a junkie anything but shooting up is a waste of product, they all eventually use needles if my high-class clientele is any guide.

Frankly, if I came down with a potentially fatal STD and people were openly speculating that I sucked a dirty syringe rather than Wallice's Dick of Death, I might be a bit huffy too. I have no clue what's the truth, I don't know any of these people, but I could see how she would be touchy about it if that wasn't true.

Ivor Biggun writes:

She was indeed a superlative whore in her time and of that she can be justly proud. Unfortunately she isn't, instead she's another delusional (former) porn star who refuses to acknowledge that nature of her work, preferring to consider herself an "actress". This leads her to come out with absurdities such as that in my sig, which dates back to the argument on ADT that resulted in Jeff's banning and the creation of this very forum. So in a way I suppose we should thank her.

"I do think I'm a lady. A model for teenage girls." - Tricia Devereaux

JRV writes:

At that time Marc Wallice wasn't some marginal meatpuppet. He was effectively A-list (yeah it was that bad back then). Marc had been in the business for a dozen or more years, was well known & was friends with many people in all parts of the business. Tricia has said that she turned down shooting with some new guy (either Brandon or Erik Everhard, I can't remember) to shoot with Marc instead because Marc was established & trusted by everyone ... and she thinks that's the shoot where she was infected by HIV.

Luke kept beating the drum until Patrick Collins (Marc worked at Elegant Angel at the time) finally made Marc get tested for real. Had Luke not kept at it Marc might have gotten away with it for longer.

What struck me at the time was that Luke wasn't told by Elvis that Marc was The One, nor did Luke discover this on his own. Someone told Luke. That means someone knew. I have never heard who finally blew the whistle; it was probably a friend of Marc's or an employee at Elegant Angel, but it still leaves open the question of how they knew. It may be someone had seen Marc's tests and noticed a pattern of suspect, perhaps faked, results. But it may also mean people other than Marc knew he was performing while HIV+.

I don't remember AIM “releasing” Marc's older tests. I think AIM started after the Marc Wallice outbreak? Federal privacy laws on medical tests wouldn't have allowed releasing results anyway unless Marc had signed the right kind of release, which probably wasn't done at that point (prior to Marc I don't recall people thinking in terms of deliberate fraud – they just wanted to make sure people got themselves tested).

I broke the news that Marc Wallice was HIV-positive April 22nd on l-keford.com and RAME. Then it felt like much of the industry descended upon me, including Mark Kernes at AVN and Wallice himself, saying Wallice was HIV-free. I posted that if I was wrong, and if they were right, then I was very sorry.

My reporting forced Wallice to get a proper HIV-test and it revealed he was HIV-positive. Sharon Mitchell, who was then working through Bill Margold's PAW (Protecting Adult Welfare) organization, funded by the FSC (Free Speech Coalition). AIM started a couple of months later.

I based my April 23rd 1998 report on Wallice being HIV-positive from several sources:

* Gene Ross had written in AVN two years before that Wallice had changed the dates on HIV-tests and, I think Gene wrote the following in effect, had been suspected of transmitting HIV.

* Various pornographers told me that Marc Wallice was HIV-positive, was perhaps responsible for the string of HIV-transmissions, and was avoiding proper testing.

* That Wallice had had unprotected anal sex with all the girls who'd come down HIV-positive in the past couple of years.

At the time of my April 23rd report, I had not seen an HIV-positive test result for Wallice, nor had I spoken to Wallice or Margold or Sharon Mitchell or Jim South.
