General words of advice for aspiring porn starlets include:

* Start slowly. Do magazine work. Let the video offers come in. Mull them over. Choose carefully and wisely. Go with those folks who pay the best and treat you the best -- such as Vivid and Ed Powers.

* Go slowly. Don't do anal or gangbangs at first. Perhaps not even work with guys. Just do girl-girl for a year or so, then guys... Then after a few years, do your first anal. That way you're always holding something back. You increase the tease and increase the interest in seeing you go all the way. Asia Carrera is an excellent example of this.

* There is usually an oversupply of men wanting to enter porn and a lack of beautiful women. So guys who want to get into the business, generally need to persuade some beautiful woman to enter with them.

If you're thinking shooting porn is the road to riches or even to making a living read this, it might save you some money and time.

I would like to state this is to help those who are determined to become porn producers and deter those who think it's easy.

Firstly, porn is a saturated market. The last figures I heard for the US was 16,000 videos released in a year, that's over 44 a day. An average magazine every month receives 10 times the amount of content they need.

The Internet is probably the least saturated section but look around at some of the prices people are working for. People are offering content to us at prices we cannot produce it for, we don't buy it because we know we can't sell it. Because the bottom of the market is flooded.

So if you're still determined to follow read on.

First decide what niche to shoot, you need to know something about the niche as those buying it, the surfer, will definitely have a clue, there is no niche called "Crap Pornography". Research, research and research again. Then learn about what you researched.

Buy decent equipment, otherwise you will look like an amateur to the models and your work will suffer. The better your cameras and lights the better your work will turn out. Crisper, cleaner, better lit, better color balanced, in focus images or video will sell. Content shot on cheap equipment is everywhere and being practically given away most of the time.

If you don't have a budget of $5,000 minimum for equipment forget about it. Even that budget is pushing it.

Now learn how to use the equipment. The new digital photography age makes life so easy. There is absolutely no excuse for out of focus, poorly lit and bad color pictures. Calling it amateur is not an excuse.

So now you know your niche and equipment. Next is your market. Take some time to research it look at what people at the top are publishing. You will never enter the market at this level, this is where you're aiming for. Be very careful what you post or email, because people will start to ask to see samples.

Next stop is models and this is the tough part. Where are they going to come from, what kind of models can you find, what will they do, what will they want to earn? All these factors need to be resolved where you are, not asking me about how I do it. Models in Czech will do more, do it better and be more plentiful than models in Afghanistan or even New York, they also tend to be better looking. Your models situation will need to be resolved by you locally.

Learning how to make a model who is only there for the money and with no intentions of fucking anyone, look like she would fuck for a pizza is the real gift of a pornographer. Each model is different, needs a different approach, different direction and different motivating. If I have to explain how to do this I seriously suggest you go practise for a year until you get this right.

This is the tough part. Learning how to get the maximum out of a model when they intend doing the minimum is the hardest part of my job. Any pornographer will tell you they are part photographer, part pornographer, part psychologist and part wet nurse, with a little bit of favourite uncle or lover thrown in. And if you think this is an easy way to get laid, forget about it.

Remember the bottom of the ladder is crowded and saturated. If you think it's going to be easy with 100 other people producing content no better or no different from what you can do then think again. In addition to the many letters and emails I receive from men wanting to become porn studs (see the report on "How to be a Porn Star" at www.davecummings.com), I also get lots of inquiries from people looking to be producers, directors, script writers, and crew members. Instead of lauding the upcoming late-April release of my new series "Sex Fun", or the happenings of the last 30 days in the Adult Film Industry, this month’s column will cover my personal views on some of the other avenues into porn.

Though I prefer to be positive and encouraging, I also have a responsibility to be personally honest in what I write here as my personal view. First of all, you need to know that there is a HUGE glut of video tapes in the market place; some folks credit this disastrous situation to people with some extra investment bucks, a 3-chip digital camcorder, and the (mostly) false idea that they can get laid and/or become millionaires in the $4.2 Billion Adult Film Industry. Many want to improve the quality of adult video, or appeal to renters and buyers who have the same specific preferences as they do (indeed, there are different preferences for different viewers, but the majority of consumers are mostly men watching by themselves who often seem to prefer: to have little time "wasted" on set-up/plot/dialogue; to see beautiful and sexually enthusiastic young girls having hot sex; and, after the "money shot" for that sex scene, to view other/additional sex scenes but with different girls----hence, the reason "Gonzo" videos are so popular. Full length features with plots, nice settings, high production values, and love-making as well as sex, seem to appeal primarily but not exclusively to couples and women—--features cost much more to produce, but often bring in soft core cable money not available to many gonzo videos. And, of course, there are specialty videos which appeal to a specific audience, such as those viewers who like B&D, older women, heavier women, gang bangs, foot-lovers, etc.). Because of the glut of many kinds of available productions, some wholesale buyers/distributors are extremely picky about their selections (and sometimes are a little slow in paying their accounts payable). I’ve heard of instances where producers waited many months before they got fully paid and had enough proceeds available to finance their next release).

Since I’m familiar with the financial aspects of my "Dirty Dave, The Sugardaddy" gonzo line, let me use it as an example. Generally having five regular-length sex scenes and three "quickie" sex scenes of additional actresses who will be in full-length scenes in other volumes of the 90-minute series (all eight scenes have different girls/set-ups/sex, and cum shots), I spend approximately $10,000 in hard costs to get 1500 fully completed copies delivered to my sales distributor for onward sale and shipment to wholesale distributors/buyers at approximately $12 each. If (and with today’s massive glut of product, it’s a big "if") all 1500 copies are sold, it brings in $18,000 which is split 75%-25% with my sales distributor, leaving me with $13,500 or a gross profit of only $3,500. As a result of the glut of product and the low profits for Producers, I now release a new video every 6-8 weeks instead of every month as previously. An investment of $10,000 yielding an eventual profit of $3,500 is not going to make any producer or investor rich, especially since it often takes 2-6 months to get your money. Follow-on foreign licensing, catalog sales, and Internet sales might possibly bring in some additional profits, but not much. If someone plans to put out a $10,000 video a month, they probably need at least $50,000 to finance the first five productions before enough collections from their first release will be available to finance subsequent productions. The video your sales distributor sells for $12 to wholesale distributors and buyers probably winds up being listed in a retail store at $39.95 –-- rather than produce videos, perhaps investors should become distributors or buy adult bookstores!?!? "New" producers/investors sometimes mistakenly think they will make a lot of money, when they actually are merely contributing to the already huge glut of product while waiting to eventually realize that they are not going to make a worthwhile profit, let alone become rich! (And, as far as the "fantasy" that every adult actress can’t wait to f--- every guy/producer/crew member they see, forget it!)

Script writing seems to be centered in a few select insiders, while most directors prefer to either write their own script or come up with a "set-up" just minutes before filming. In spite of increased numbers of productions, I’ve not noticed even a slight increase in the demand for scripts; instead, I hear of scripts from want-to-be writers being routinely trashed by producers, directors, Production Managers and companies without even reading them. I also hear that in those few cases where a relative/friend/writer provided a script, the pay for it was only a couple of hundred dollars.

Directors seem to prefer using the same experienced crew members they’ve previously used. Additions to crews usually come from recommendations from other directors, the production company, or present crew members, thus proving a basis for experience and professionalism instead of someone who might make mistakes or "hit on" the girls while working on the set---and, no, the girls do NOT have wanton sex with crew members or others on the sets! I’ve noticed that even the experienced and dependable crew members have to hustle to find work. There’s no shortage of qualified crew members.

Incidentally, all performers must have a not-older-than-30-days PCR by DNA HIV test before they are allowed to participate in a sex scene. Unlike the somewhat basic Elisa test that most physicians order under routine situations, we get a VERY expensive state-of-the-art test every 28-29 days.

Just like I know of NO Adult Industry company which will give auditions to guys wanting to be porn actors, there doesn’t seem to be a need for investors, producers, directors, writer, or crew members either.

The above is my personal opinion, and even though everyone might not totally agree with me, I’m confident that it’s pretty much right on target. I wish I could be more encouraging for folks wanting to explore alternative ways to get into the Adult Industry, but I have to be truthful.

Don't worry, the industry will probably find a way to crew it up and keep it underground, and in their hands only."

Mike South: "I have tried more than thirty guys as talent and of those only one could get the job done. Truth is trying out a guy is a waste of my time and money unless he:

"1. gets an HIV test

"2. sends me footage of him and a girl getting it on and shot by a third party cameraman. This proves to me that he is not camera shy and can last more than a few minutes

"If he will do these two things I'll give him a shot when I am in his area.

"If you live in Chicago, Atlanta, New York, Dallas or Podunk and you want to be a porn star you are dreaming (OK you're an idiot), how much porn is made in your city? If you are serious move to LA.

"If you are serious about being in the biz LA is where the work is, go there and spend your days at Jim South's office, you will get work.

"The best way to get in the biz is to find a good looking girl who wants to be in the biz and ride her coat tails, anyone in the biz will give you one shot at it with her.

"As far as any kind of fan phobia, that's really a stretch, I mean porn stars are far more accessible than most in the public eye. Take CES for instance, fans hang out with us in the bars as well as at the show, no one has body guards and most of us understand that without fans we are out of a job, so truth is we love fans, so don't put it off on the fans if some guy doesn't have what it takes to work in the biz as male talent.

"This business is no different than any other in that, if you want a job you need to exhibit some proficiency for it, telling me you can drive a nail doesn't make you a carpenter.

"As far as professional cameramen, directors and photographers anyone with a mainstream Hollywood background actually has a leg up, most people in this biz would give them work in an instant. That is not to say that if you have been a photographer for Field and Stream that Penthouse, Playboy or even Totally Tasteless video would hire you, but if you are accomplished at taking pictures of females, you'll get work if you want it. It may not pay as much as Hollywood but you'll get it.

"If you want to be in this business you can be but we aren't going to come to Lugnut, Louisiana, drag you off your f---ing sofa to LA and make you a porn star, you gotta get off your ass and do it yourself."

Give them a percentage of the gross. Yeah, I know the Hollywood porn producers don't do that. But is there a law that says they're the ONLY producers that can do porn? I don't think so. You want to get beautiful women, you have to be attractive for them.

"There are a TON of amateur and semi-amateur producers out there too. For instance, where did Seymore Butts and Shane come from? (I really don't know where they came from, but I know I hadn't heard of them before they burst onto the scene....). They seem to do pretty good.

"I don't know how they do business in California with the porn industry and frankly I don't care. I don't NEED to know. All I need to know is what I can do here in the midwest.

"Equipment for making the videos themselves: Around $10,000 for a good Hi-8 video camera and editing machines. Not state of the art mind you, but good quality.

"Duplicating the tapes: I personally can get this for free for a while. I have connections. Cost is the cost of the tapes themselves.

"Packaging: With the advent of cheap, high quality 4-color presses such as the Aqua Chromapress and others the video-box graphics would be pretty cheap. Doing the graphics themselves is a no-brainer. I work in the pre-press industry.

"Marketing: Set up a web site with direct orders for the videos.

"Now, I just laid out a simple plan (yeah, I know, there is a lot missing in between....just trying to simplify things here) for producing porn. Is this a closed industry? Hardly......"

Bushmiller: "The parallels between porn and wrestling are uncanny:

* Both businesses consider their fan-base cretinous and beneath them

* Both glut the market.

* Both think only THEY know what sells...

"I've found very little amateur porn I liked but it most definitely was a wake-up call, just as when some indy rock band sells 100,000 records by itself. All of the sudden the majors go searching for "street cred." Those who put out porn are usually complacent, condescending and lazy."
