I have been spending alot of my time overseeing production of video for our reality sites as this is where we are making a big push currently. I am also lucky to have an outstanding team of employees who do an excellent job which enables me to work in the background on developing new business for the company.
Biggest changes I have seen is the continues thinning out of the business. Many people leaving, or taking a much lower profile to disassociate themselves from the adult side.
Many people have simply gone out of business. Profits are not what they once were for most. For those who were in the biz for partying as much as for real business, the wake up call is well underway. There are still a few idiots you see around at shows partying 24/7 who have no business sense and have made some $, but I expect them to be gone within a year. Those days are over, and I for one am pleased to see it.
Also spam is now readily acceptable way to generate traffic. If you do not have email traffic these days, it is hard to turn a profit. I would say 50%+ of joins are from email overall.
I do not see the VISA regulations having much of an affect. The small fees they are now charging will help to weed out some of the smaller sites and fly by night operations. I figure if you can not afford $1000 fee, you should not be in business.
VISA also hopes they can ensure the people on their "do not process" for list are out of business, but this will simply not work People can hide behind partners, shell corporations, etc. Frankly I would love to see VISA shut these folks down as they have done tremendous harm to the business, but I do not see it happening. Maybe you can get your hands on this list of people VISA says can not process. I have heard a few names on it, and they are people we all know.
Why should I be afraid of Ron Levi [Fantasyman]? He is washed up and has been in this business. People used to say if you crossed FM, he would kill your business. Well I guess those days are over as he has pretty much lost any of the little influence he had left. I would not put his company (which I can not recall the name of since they recently changed names for some reason?) in the top 20 as far as revenue on the adult internet. Even since his partner left... CE has become a much smaller player. If they do 500 to 1000 joins a day anymore, I would be surprised. Surf around, nobody sends them traffic because their payout rate is very sub par. It would not surprise me to see FM walk away from this biz shortly as he realizes he is no longer a big fish in the sea, he is becoming more of a minnow every day. I think he has too much pride to let that happen, and will simply exit stage left in his purple prowler.

A studio needed to test screen a black comedy. So they booked it in a theater in South Central Los Angeles, where the blacks, browns and a few working class whites live. The studio execs, including the studio president, drove down in their Jaguars and Mercedes, scared out of their minds.
The movie that caused a near-riot at the preview was TRESPASS. It may have been in Compton, or possibly south central, Baldwin Hills or some such non middle-class neighborhood. It needn't have been cast with two African American leads, but somebody though that would make it "hip" and "urgent" and even "socially relevant" and instead the blacks threw their refreshments at the screen!
Blacks don't sit quietly in movies the way middle-class whites do. They talk back to movies. They emote. They let their feelings be known. They often shoot guns and riot. This particular crowd hated the ending of the film. They became hostile. They wanted to take their anger out. The execs were frightened and had to be hustled out of the theater.
Some producers and studios write contracts that prohibit "urban movies," the most famous euphemism for black films, because they don't sell overseas and many domestic theaters fear attracting large black audiences because they can become violent.
MasterCard Adds Merchant Service Fees
AVN.com reports: Following closely on the heels of VISA's announcement that it will begin charging "high risk" merchants initial and recurring fees to use its services, PayPal revealed today in a letter to its Webmaster clients that MasterCard's fees will be even steeper. According to PayPal, on Nov. 1 MasterCard will begin charging all merchants who process charges through an Internet Payment Service Provider, or so-called "third-party processor," an initial fee of $1,000 and an annual renewal fee of $500. The credit card company also will require "sponsored merchants" to complete a registration form about their businesses, URLs, and the like.
Earlier this month, MasterCard ordered that adult online merchants remove its logo from their Websites. The letter PayPal sent to its merchant clients follows:
Dear Merchant, We would like to update you on new VISA and MasterCard regulations that affect the way Internet Payment Service Providers (IPSPs) such as PayPal conduct business. Both VISA and MasterCard require high-risk merchants to complete a registration form, pay an initial registration fee, and pay renewal fees on an annual basis (details below). We value our merchants and are dedicated to providing you with the high-quality service to which you are accustomed. Please note that these fees are imposed by VISA and MasterCard, not by PayPal.
In keeping with PayPal's core policy of not charging set-up costs and/or annual fees to our merchants, PayPal (in contrast with many IPSPs) will not add any additional or hidden costs to these Visa and MasterCard fees. PayPal,, like all other IPSPs, must comply with the regulations. In order to assure your continued access to PayPal's transaction platform, we need you to provide the requested information by November 1. If we do not hear from you by the close of business on November 1, PayPal will be unable to process your transactions until all such information has been submitted. While some IPSPs have announced that they will cease processing for non-U.S. merchants, that is not the case with PayPal. PayPal will continue to process transactions for high-risk merchants in the United States, Canada, and Europe through our existing banking arrangements in these areas. In addition, we will continue working to expand our banking relationships worldwide.
Below is a summary of the requirements for both Visa and MasterCard:
VISA:
Visa will require an initial registration fee of $500. Visa will require
an annual renewal fee of $250.
Paypal must provide Visa with monthly sales, chargebacks, and refund
information on each adult merchant.
MasterCard: MasterCard will require an initial registration fee of $1,000. MasterCard will require an annual renewal fee of $500. What Caused The Demise Of YNOT?

End In Sight For Recurring Billing?
Internet pornographers make most of their money off recurring billing, where, unless you cancel, you get billed each month for a subscription to a site. Due to new implemented security systems from Visa and Mastercard it won't be possible to do recurring billings anymore. New regulations will make it necessary that credit card information will be directly entered on the Visa/Mastercard system. At the moment there's no specific date known when Visa/Mastercard will implement this new procedure but they already informed us that this will come shortly. Message Boards were POWERFUL harvesting tools for doing business. We tried our issues in the Public eye, and it was addictive to watch these train wrecks occur. The media blew up our industry very rapidly and there was such an influx of webmasters chasing the gold, that the community kinda lost control of policing the environment and it became kinda renegade around 1997-1998. This frenzy and stampede brought in alot of "Gen X" who had no regard for the infrastrucure previously laid nor concerns about stealing website designs and content even when confronted. Honor was not a big deal anymore as it was a given in the beginning.
We now entered an era of shock marketing, where banners read like utter filth. The middle age pioneers with the exception of Rick MuenYong who started YNOT at age 18 saw a huge runaway train coming. The reach for gold was becoming high risk and reckless. The younger ones saw porn as acceptable and never realized they were subjecting themselves to indictment, risking their family etc. Most important they never considered their actions when exposing children to their shock marketing & utter filth while tricking mainstream domains to their porn sites [ie-whitehouse.com]. It was all about greed and decieving the surfer, it was about double billing, misleading surfers on signups so they would be too embarrassed to grieve the CC charge. The adult industry was now a predator.
As the industry grew each generation of webmaster was getting younger and/or more nieve. Our single community was now fractured, we were no longer unified. Traffic was no longer reciprocated which was our standard, we did not have to know you, if you had a good site and you recp'd back, we linked you. So a new site could instantly go up with 1000-2000 hits a day in less than 24 hours. Everyone was doing basically general porn...a few niche sites, but that was not the bomb yet as legal content had not caught up yet to handle the growth. So sites were contingent on what legal content they could afford and that kinda dictated what kind of site you had. You were a paysite, a link site, a toplist, free site or an adult directory/search engine, AVS, or retail product site. There were only a few affliliate programs but these few paved the way for the others to come on the scene.
During the boom & industry fragmentation, sub-cults formed. Wallstreet attended the shows looking to enter the business. Rumour had it some Fortune 500's were looking for a way to enter the adult industry without blowing their mainstream image. Mainstream failed at making money as we ran outta pots to catch the falling coins. The internet adult business had arrived. Innovations were being born from our industry, mainstream wanted adult webmasters as consultants [quietly of course]. Webmasters jumped ship from the adult side chasing rainbows they believed were bigger on the mainstream side. Lost their ass and faded away, and some have returned back to their roots.
By 1998 the players were in place, often referred to as the "cartel" [CE known as CECash now, CEN, MaxCash, Python, Intergal]. I am sure I forgot many, you can field the other names [lol]. The original GIA ppl. Everyone knew the name FantasyMan, RB, JoeE, David/Python, Dean Shannon/Intergal etc.

I think FM invented the cross bill. I remember the old days where when you joined CE, you were also "given" a CEN membership. Much like the old Xpics, you have won a membership scheme. As recent as a few months ago, they were doing it with Silver Cash, until VISA axed posting. Not saying it is illegal, it was just done in a sneaky manner and IMHO was deceptive in nature.

Third Party Processors Narcing Each Other Out To VISA

They are scared s---less that a bunch of people are going to run off to GloBill and the other third party processors who have been claiming they are immune to these new restrictions by VISA USA. Caldwell claims that VISA INTERNATIONAL is completely behind these new regulations and will nail webmasters using offshore merchant accounts and third party processors who do the same.
Ron Caldwell: "I have returned from NY and have additional information from our Banks and Visa regarding the new IPSP rules. We will be sending an email on Wednesday to all CCbill Clients regarding the Registration process, but due to the questions posted ealier I have posted this. I will try to answer some of the basic question, with more details to follow in Wednesday email
1. The new IPSP rules are worldwide, and will be in effect in every Visa region on Nov 15th.
2. Visa stated that 80+% of all adult webmasters are located in the US. and they plan to enforce the Crossboarder issue vigorously on any US webmaster processing offshore. (This means if you are a US webmaster you must process your transactions in a US bank. If you are French you need to process your transactions in a EU bank)
3. Visa expressed they are aware of claims from some of our competitors that they would be able to avoid New IPSP rules. Visa response this was absolutely not the case and these companies will be speaking with their acquiring banks shortly. In fact Visa was quite upset regarding this issue.
4. On Wednesday CCbill will be starting U.S. webmaster registration.
5. Registration Forms will be available late Wed. in your admin section.
6. U.S. Webmasters will be give a choice of deducting the $750 registration over 1 to 3 pay periods prior to Nov 15th.
7. The GOOD NEWS. CCbill will be offering a $750 Credit to current and New customers Here is how it works. You still have to pay the $750 up front. CCbill will be refunding your processing fees on new transactions ONLY (not rebills) for the next 9 months. Once you have reached the $750 processing credit your normal processing fees will begin again on your new transactions. Bottom line, continue to send new transactions and CCbill will pay the fee.
7. Foreign Webmaster registration will begin on Oct 28th. in the Webmaster section
8. We are working with Visa on the exact reporting info and fees for the different Visa Regions.
9. We expect to be able to offer our foreign webmasters a solution in the EU region and Asia Pacific Regions. More details and Registration process will be available on the 28th
10. We will know more later this week with Canada. We now feel there is a 50/50 chance that we will also be able to offer Canadian Webmasters a solution.
New VISA Regulations

How much better - if your conversions arent at least 30% better (I'd say more like 70%) I'll double the difference from your current programs. Oh yeah - we prepay, the others don't. I'm printing money at the moment and happy to spread it around!!!

There are two organisations, visa usa and visa international. Both hold roughly equal power in the big scheme of things. Europe is bigger in terms of infrastructure, etc, but smaller in terms of money since Europeans are more credit-averse than Americans. There is historically some anitpathy between the two. Its easy to understand why.
Chargeback processing costs are a much bigger issue for US acquiring banks than european acquiring banks, since most signups come from the US. Visa International can't quite come to grips with what the fuss is about (I know thats an oversimplification) The visa business model loses money on the acquiring side and makes it back on lending to consumers.
Visa prints money - dont let them fool you, they just lose a bit on the frontend of our business and milk it back off the consumers over time. Its a very very very oversimplification but my gut feeling is that visa international would just like to up merchant fees to make it profitable from the get go - while visa usa wants to put the squeeze on 3rd party IPSP's and get rid of the unprofitable sections of the industry - a costly and infrastructure intensive process.
Visa International has no intention of following the lead of Visa Usa. (although they probably will in a year or so, which is a lifetime in internet terms) How do I know? I have 5 count em 5 merchants scattered all over the world. I've got the same story from all 5 without the slightest variation. Thats 5 bankers in 5 different countries (3 different continents) who gave me the same story. Visa USA has absolutely NO JURISDICTION over any acquiring bank outside the USA.
If Ron, Ibill, Epoch, or any of the others want to try and pretend that the whole world is in the same s---ty boat as they are - let em lie. Which are the highest paying programs right now? Anyone with their own merchant. The game has changed. Once traffic was key, now its processing. Let webmasters come on the board and say which programs they are making the most money out of right now?
In my dealings with Visa they have NO PROBLEM going back on their word. IMHO whichever processor is doing the most sucking up, the most trying to secure their position will be the one that gets screwed first, being the tall poppy that gets cut down.

Especially yours Serge :-)))) The General and I were both processing through the national australia bank at the time, printing money as though we were hallucinating it and it was real. You were doing the same thing with Yishai (who was also printing money on a scale never before imagined), playing both ends against the middle.....Ahhh I digress.
Anyway. 2 weeks before Christmas 1999 Dean has a meeting with all the top visa management who flew up to see him. They all told him how happy they were with the arrangement, everything was cool, chargebacks were low, etc. I got the same, I was in daily contact with the bank, licking ass like a good smut peddler should to his bankers.
Exactly one week after they shook hands, told Dean they couldnt be happier, they ganked both our merchants with ZERO notice. They gave us an ultimatum. $50 per chargeback fine. For us about $450K - him it would have been more. To test the waters I said "no problem, just tell me who you want the check made out to, or where you want the money sent - I'll do it right now" The bank manager started stuttering. Said he'd have to call me back. When he called me back he said "if you want to pay the fine, next month we will double it to $100 per chargeback, if you still want to pay that we will double it again. If you want to do that we will make it RETROACTIVE. We will do you a deal - he said. You agree to stop processing, we will leave you off the banned merchant list" Visa's word *cannot* be trusted under any circumstances.
They can and will change the rules as and when they see fit. Thisis the start of Visa USA squeezing the unprofitable segments from the industry. Its the first turn of the vice which will end, finally, with customers having to opt in by email for each rebilling. My money for the first of the big 3 processors to fall is epoch. Whichever one it is I will laugh my ass off even though I have substantial recurrings with all of them. Although Ibill has screwed webmasters more (myself included), by doing so they have protected their ass a bit in advance. In doing so they lost a LOT of ground to epoch and ccbill, whos management is not nearly as conservative. Its going to be interesting times this coming year - and there will be just as much money to be made as ever before - just spread between fewer people.
CJ writes on Oprano.com: our conversions dropped overall by less than 20% when we moved to a 3rd party processor. the signups we're losing were not the ones making us money in the first place. the webmasters with the biggest drops are those with stacks of duplicates and all the other crap low scrubbing lets in. there's no question that a well setup merchant network gives you many advantages, but eventually it stops being worth the hassle.

On reflection, you are right. If I was top visa management - the effect I would want to achieve would be achieved best by.... Hitting the biggest player, the one that has tried hardest to play by the rules strictly and has the best reputation for looking after their webmasters. The one that looks most legitimate (being a public company) and which is the best managed. The one which contains the highest percentage of the problem sector of the market (spammers and beast site owners - those evil motherf---ers ;-) hidden amongst a sizeable portion of low chargeback non-adult business. Now I think about it this is reminiscent of the DMR situation where technically DMR had very low charegebacks.
The new VBV (verified by visa) standard is being pushed heavily by visa international. Visa USA doesnt like it at all - some kind of turf war s---, because visa usa thinks the address verification is adequate. Of course we all know the address verification doesnt work for s--- unless you are residing in the US. It would be great for the industry but slash signup rates for a while. If everything goes to s--- VBV is the best solution IMHO, but visa usa wants no part of it from what I have been told.
OK there is a fundamental unresolvable conflict of interest between paysites and 3rd party procesors. Deep down they hate us for thinking up newer and cleverer ways to risk their merchants while f---ing surfers and generally giving the industry a bad name, while deep down I resent them treating us with such disdain after all the f---ing money we have made the ungrateful s---s over the years.
Paysites (ME) want to f--- the surfer as hard fast and as deep as I can. I'm under no illusions as to what I want to do. Whatever I can get away with on a 3rd partys merchant - I will do. This is my edge - this is how I pay more to webmasters. My only integrity and loyalty is to the webmasters who send me traffic. Period. 3rd party processors want to stop me f---ing the surfer too hard so they dont lose their merchants, but still want to let me f--- the surfer enough that they get their cut. Therein lies the philosophical quandry. I guess we kinda sorta do this at the expense of the 3rd party processors merchant relations, although thats why they take such a big percentage (hint - key to the gordian knot solution to the whole problem) I f---ing hate you being smarter than me!!!!!!!
We think in terms of percentages of chargebacks - they think in terms of numbers of chargebacks. We forget there are massive rooms FULL of hundreds of people working around the clock processing our chargebacks. I visited the NAB's such room in Melbourne in 1998. They had over 100 full time staff working 24 hours in 3 shifts on our chargebacks alone, and EVERY DESK had a laminated copy of the pbits.com terms and conditions. And that was chicken s--- compared to todays numbers. CJ your program RULED the net for so long it got so big that it came to EVERYONES notice at Visa. Frankly you paid so well nobody could hope to compete with you. I know your chargebacks were low too.

Steve Seidman, the bombastic editor-in-chief of Adult Stars Magazine, is leaving. Word of his pending resignation (one of the industry's worst-kept secrets) began circulating during last weeks' East Coast Video Show with official confirmation being released today.
Seidman, an industry insider since 1965 resigned his five-year post at Adult Stars Magazine to assume a variety of editorial and managerial duties at Dennis Hofs' World Famous Moonlight Bunny Ranch in Carson City, Nevada. While the full extent of his responsibilities have still not been finalized they will include such activities as: managerial editorship of the ranch's print magazines - Bordello Confidential and Cathouse Files - as well as their varied website venues (among them www.bunnyranch.net, www.sunsetthomas.net) and existing and future video and cable television projects.
Under Seidman's leadership, Adult Stars Magazine, grew from a simple monthly (free) website with basic pictures and a handful of video reviews to become a major industry player with pay websites (Adult Stars Magazine and Gay Adult Stars Magazine), a daily web-based newspaper (Porno News Network), as well as a direct provider and producer of adult cable television and website content.

Jenna Jameson's Second Book For ReganBooks Announced
From AVN.com: Jenna Jameson's second book under her two-book contract with ReganBooks will be titled How to Make Love Like a Porn Star. "I've already started work on my book and feel confident that there's never been anything quite like it. I want both men and women to have fun reading it and really improve their own love lives by reading about my experiences," Jameson told AVN.com.
Jameson signed a two-book deal with ReganBooks, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, in August. The first book, an autobiography, is slated for release in July 2003. How to Make Love Like a Porn Star should be out in 2004.
Gauge Update
Gauge writes on RAME: I wish you guys would stop speculating on who
it is and what sport. All I did was vent my hurt and frustration on
my website, in my personal journal. It's all true, 100% of it. The
fact is, the journal entry was meant more to be a wakeup call for
him. Because I know he'll see it, and now he KNOWS that I found out
he was flaunting the tape around to his friends. If you read my journal,
you'll see that I really thought this guy was nice, he din't treat
my like I was a pornstar, and he didn't try sleeping with me right
away. So, I let my guard down and when we did become intimate we had
a great time. He said he wanted to make the tape so he could watch
it when he was away on road trips. So it was a personal intimate type
of tape, not a SMUT tape. Something that a couple might make together,
not something you get paid to do. So when I found out I was the "hit
of the locker room" so to speak, or at least to his friends who he

is that he grows up and stops showing people the tape, and that he's
