ATLANTA (AP) - The owner of a popular strip club used the bar as a base for the Gambino crime family, bribed police officers and procured prostitutes for celebrities, a federal indictment alleges.
The indictment, unsealed Wednesday, named Gold Club owner Steven Kaplan and 15 others, including a current policeman and a former officer, on charges including racketeering, money laundering, loan sharking, credit card fraud and prostitution. Kaplan and 10 others were arraigned today before a federal magistrate.
Millions of dollars were skimmed from the club's profits to make cash payments to the New York-based Gambino family, said U.S. Attorney Richard Deane. The protection money was ``sort of like an umbrella insurance policy,'' that allowed Kaplan to spurn offers from rival crime families when they approached ``wanting a piece of the action,'' Leach said.
Kaplan also is accused of obstructing prior investigations of the Gambino family by paying off and hiding witnesses. Kaplan and his associates are charged with knowingly permitting prostitution in private rooms at the Gold Club and providing dancers to professional athletes and other celebrities for prostitution at the club and other locations.
Two Delta Air Lines employees were charged with providing sharply reduced air fares to Kaplan and his associates. Some defendants are charged with double-billing customers' credit cars or altering receipts by adding huge tips. Another is accused of raping a Gold Club dancer in a limousine. Two dancers were charged with participating in acts of prostitution and helping organize prostitution services.
