Men Need Women

Personally I perceive myself as being very anti-social while wishing I had more reliable friends. Bruce and I were the equivalent of pillars of stability in the porn world -- now I'm more a pillar of salt or a swamp or something. Testosterone is a barrier to socialization. Team sports -- male bonding is shoving each other around. Join the army and learn to fight together. Does NOT having the urge to bop one's fellow man on the head make one homosexual?

All I read is true crime books, the Times and occasionally your site. I have just read "The Mad, The Bad, and the Innocent" by Kirwin, which is "true cases of evil, madness and murder" etc. Some new cases. I'm always searching for new cases and new insights. This woman's specialty is forensic psychology using standardized testing. I'm going to read it again but might share. There's one I want to read that's still in hardback which I can't afford.
Re Porno Magazines: A newsstand tour with Luke F-rd might be in order. I won't go through magazines at a newsstand unless I want to buy something to take home. It feels like throwing trash out the car window -- something wrong. But maybe you can find an exception somewhere in some organized moral system that would let me justify it. Like, would looking for work in magazines make it more moral?

Paul Wisner Dies
Pornographer Paul Wisner died in his hotel in Germany last night. He owned Gourmet Video, Parliament News and American Art among other porn companies.
His numerous employees are wondering if they still have jobs.
"It occurred to me," said porner Lynne L-patin, "that one of the things about Paul Wisner's passing, and the end of an era, is that now we can't put a contract out on a guy. Now they can call the police and put us in jail. I'm so confused. The other way was easier."
Wisner owned Gourmet Video and its building together but Wisner owns Parliament News and American Art exclusively, I think.
An intensely private man, like the whole Wisner family (he has a son and daughter), Paul bought out Milton Luros in 1974.
Lynne L-patin entered porn in 1974 as an 18-year old nude magazine model. She worked before the camera and in the office for the biweekly newspaper LA Star before moving to Paul Wisner's Parliament News in 1977 where she worked in magazine design and distribution. In 1983 she graduated the University of Massachusetts with a degree in Management and returned to the LA porn biz in 1989. That same year she married Bruce Walker who worked at Wisner's Parliament News/Gourmet Video.
Lynne: "Friday I am going to put on a nice dress and go by American Art...
"I remember Christian Mann's father Kurt coming in to see Paul... [Kurt Mann was in the porn magazine business.] It makes me feel sad. Reuben died, and it's the end of an era. Paul represented that era for me. Can you think of anyone who was working in the 1960s who's still creating?"
Luke: "Bobby Genova, Eric Edwards..."
Lynne: "All Parliament News is doing now is making occassional magazines and reprinting...
"I was told that Wisner was very very smart, but I wasn't told that by anybody who themselves was very smart. I don't feel I can be objective about Paul because I wasn't treated well.
"Paul was in dock with Bruce [Walker, Lynne's late husband], and Howie [Wasserman] and Joey [Spallone]... But ultimately none of that meant anything [Wisner got rid of Bruce Walker and Joe Spallone].
"I once was punished for discussing Paul. A customer asked 'how is Paul.' I said, at the time he was smoking a carton [of cigarettes] a day, 'I wish he would stop smoking. I really worry about him because when he climbs the stairs every morning and I hear him [wheezing]. It turns out someone in the restaurant overheard that and I was disciplined for it.
"I was not expressing any deep dark secrets or private secrets. Everybody knew the guy smoked a pack a day, two packs a day, and everybody could see his bright red nose and hear his breathing and see he was overweight.
"For me, this is one more break in the chain... And the people [connected with Wisner] did not stick together very nicely [because Wisner did not treat them nicely].
"What do you think of the future of porno magazines, on paper?"
Luke: "I think they will always have a future. The internet will not totally supplant them. I still see dozens of porno mags on the newsstand."
Lynne: "I will give AVN 24 hours and then we'll have to call them misogynistic racists [for the bad review they gave of Lynne's couples oriented ethnic feature Indigo Moods]. It's true. My movie is not bad. Bruce and I wanted it to go to black couples everywhere and they deliberately blocked it and I don't know if it is because they're afraid of upsetting Christian Mann or because they're misogynistic racists and they wouldn't want a movie that shows black people as nice and not as Freaks, Hoes and Floes or because they're racists and I'm white and Mr. Marcus says white people can't direct black movies.
Wisner made and distributed child pornography.

EVEN if such charges are brought against distributors or bookstores,
a labyrinth of fake publishers, fake addresses, murky juvenile and obscenity
laws, porno dealers taking the Fifth Amendment - all protect the photographers,
the recruiters of children and the people who make "chicken films"
and magazines.
Take the case of Lollitots magazine.The masthead leads one to believe
the magazine is a coast-to-coast operation - published by Delta Publishing
Co. Inc. in Wilmington, Del., and distributed solely by Parliament News
in Sun Valley, Calif., just outside Los Angeles. But according to Delaware
authorities, Delta Publishing is a fictitious front. Parliament News,
however, is for real.
The city of Los Angeles is prosecuting Parliament News and its president,
Paul Wisner, 52, charging them with possession with intent to commercially
disseminate obscene material.
This month, a number of District book sellers were picked up in a raid
and charged with the misdemeanor of selling obscene material, Lollitots
included. The case is pending trial.
"Under the D.C. obscenity code we could move on Lollitots - because
a section prohibits the lewd exhibition of genitals of minors,"
says Robert Kendall, special assistant U.S. attorney for obscenity prosecution.
But enforcement officials trying to get a tougher federal case against
Parliament or the still unknown publishers face problems.
Phil Wilens, chief of the Justice Department criminal division's government
regulations and labor department, said he "almost retched"
when he saw Lollitots. "But the only federal statute involved is
in interstate transportation of the magazine. Posing, recruiting the
girls, is all a state offense and how do you get back to the source?
I haven't any idea."
Presumably, since Lollitots is distributed solely by Parliament News
in California and was available over the counter at a 14th and H Streets
NW "adult" bookstore, some interstate transportation took
place. But Wilens says, "You have to actually prove beyond a reasonable
doubt that Parliament indeed shipped that particular edition of that
magazine - packaged and delivered it to a carrier and in fact carried
and delivered it to an address in a particular state." Records
of such shipments are hard to find. "We can make a case from time
to time," Wilens said, "but it takes a
monumental effort, and resources are low."
In the California case, Parliament News' lawyer, Stanley Fleischman,
of the Beverly Hills firm of Fleischman, Brown, Weston & Rhode,
plans to argue that Lollitots is not obscene and therefore is covered
by the First Amendment. "It is simple nudity, nothing more. For
something to be obscene [in California, unlike the District] there has
to be sexual activity."
Parliament News Inc. is no stranger to pornography indictments. It is
part of a conglomerate of printing, publishing and distributing firms
operating out of southern California.
A man named Milton Luros was once described by a Los Angeles district
attorney as "the biggest pornography publisher in Southern California
and operator of a multi-million-dollar conglomerate." In a 1972
lawsuit, it was alleged that Luros operated companies under the names
of American Art Enterprises (a publishing company), World News Inc.,
Seven Towers Inc., Academy Press, Socio
Library, London Press, OxF--d Bindery and (Lollitots') Parliament News
Inc.
Although Paul Wisner is listed as president of Parliament, Luros is
still active in the organization. Today, if you call Parliament News
and ask to speak to Luros, the operator refers you to American Art Enterprises,
the publishing house. The operator there informs you that "we go
by several names." If you then ask Paul Wisner, she refers you
back to Parliament News.
Helgeson said there is another seperate obscenity case pending against
Parliament News. Asked if there were any convictions against Wisner,
Fleischman replied, "Never one that stuck. The jury convicted and
the trial judge dismissed."
Fleischman says American Art Enterprises is not Lollitots' publisher.
When told that the publisher listed on the masthead was a fake, Fleischman
repeated that Parliament had nothing to do with the publisher. It was
pointed out that any distributor has to pay some person or company supplying
the printed material, who in turn knows the publisher. "What are
you doing, hounding me?" he snapped.
Wisner, out on bail, said he did not know who published Lollitots. "It
comes from overseas. It's published overseas." Reporter: "But
the masthead states that it is published by Delta Publishing in Wilmington,
Del." Wisner: "Yeah, that's who we deal with."
Reporter: "But that company does not and never did exist, according
to Wilmington authorities." Wisner: "That's who we deal with."
"But if it's nonexistent, how can you deal with them?" Wisner:
"We deal with an agent." "In the United States?"
Wisner: "Yes." "Then why do you say it is published overseas?"
Wisner: "I'm not interested in any interpretation of that."
He would not give the name of the agent.
Wisner was told that some people find the material in Lollitots objectionable,
that they think the children are being sexually exploited and that they
would like to find the publisher and photographers to prosecute them.
"That is not of any interest to me. I'm the distributor. If somebody's
interested in that, that's their problem. That's not my problem."
Edward Wedelstedt told the 1/98 AVN: "I was arrested 40-something times… Went to trial six times. One time [1991] I had tax problems. The government took everything I owned. People were laughing. People were making fun, that Eddie W. was out of business. It was Reuben Sturman who called Ron Braverman and Paul Wisner and said, 'We've got to help this man. We've got to get him back on his feet.'"
From a conversation with porner Lynne L-patin 10/19/99:
Lynne: "I remember Lollitots. I remember a story on TV... I thought it [Lollitots] was exclusively sold in Southern California.
"I remember going by Circus of Books in Hollywood and seeing child pornography for sale in the front door.
"I joined Parliament News in 1977. [Milton] Luros was not active in the sense of coming in and spending an eight hour day there. But he came in every few days. He looked at the books and picked up the receipts... He and his wife were in poor health."
Luke: Stanley Fleischman says that Parliament News was not Lollitots publisher.
Lynne: "Untrue. Actually, American Arts Enterprise was the graphic arts shop that built the magazine but Parliament News was its distributor. And American Art was owned by the same people who owned Parliament News even though they may have wives rather than husbands on the paperwork. That was my first job for Parliament News, shredding those photos [of child pornography]. Shredding all the 8x10s that were in the files because we were getting ready to move from Chatsworth to North Hollywood. And they had me shred thousands of photos. All the nudist photos [fo kids]. All the Lollitots photos. I saved a few at the time but I got rid of them by 1979."
Luke: So just in case there's any doubt, here's a small list of pornographers who created and distributed child pornography: Paul Wisner, Milton Luros, Reuben Sturman, Parliament News which morphed into Gourmet Video, Circus of Books and the list goes on and on and on. And folks like the revered late Stanley Fleischman led the charge defending child pornography and obfuscating the issue of child porn.
The only reason that pornographers do not create and sell child pornography today is that they can no longer get away with it.
Lynne: "As far as I remember from the news reports on TV at the time, it [Lollitots] was all shot here in Southern California and it was definitely printed on Parliament presses and it was definitely distributed by Parliament. And today I don't think you will find anybody to cop to it.
"I was 14 when I started having sex. And if you had told me then that I shouldn't have sex, I would've been really upset. So 14 is one thing, but Lollitots was people who were five and six [years of age]. And they cannot give consent. So what was happening was that the moms were giving consent and back then $500 was a lot of money."
Lynne: "When I was 17, in 1972, I was a runaway hanging out in Hollywood. And you could buy kiddie porn at any of the newsstands. And the kiddie porn I am referring to is Lollitots and Moppets [distributed by Paul Wisner's Parliament News]. And there were others, and most of them were from Mexico and most of them were from India. And then a couple of years later, when I went to work for the LA Star, I got a better handle on what was out there and what was available and what the attitude was toward it. And the first thing we noticed was a story on TV that there were five year old being paid to do these magazines. And it was all over the news.
"So they [Parliament News] were probably told to cease and desist. We were approached... Mickey Leblovik (Dr. Susan Block's husband) knows this stuff intimately. He was getting busted. They came to us and said stop. But I don't remember anybody being threatened or prosecutions..."

In previous years, Adult Video News sponsored a porno Halloween Ball, but when organizer Ron Miller decided to go it alone this year without AVN sponsorship, AVN retaliated by denying his show coverage.
I hear that AVN VP Darren Roberts really screwed up AVN's role in last year's event.
Most of the AVN staff requested and received free tickets this year but have yet to justify their "press passes" (giggle giggle when applying the word "press" to AVN) with any coverage of the event.
Wise readers should understand that when Luke, and most porners, rant about AVN, we're not really talking about what we're talking about. AVN occupies a mystical place in this ultra-physical industry.
As attorney and AVN columnist writes, "AVN is the glue that holds the industry together." Porn wallows in self hatred, and hatred of AVN frequently tends to be an expression of porners hatred of themselves (like much hatred of the FSC).
Paul Fishbein has more integrity than anyone I know in the adult industry, and also more power. He generally uses his power to further what he sees as the industry's interests. Like all trade publications, AVN frequently sacrifices journalism for the "good of the industry."
When folks say that the AVN awards are corrupt, they shouldn't be taken literally. AVN execs don't add up how much certain advertisers advertise and award awards accordingly. Rather, porners are ranting about AVN's status as the only industry trade publication, as one of the rare publications that accords porn any respect. AVN is family and it hurts more when family don't recognize you than when strangers diss you.
For Luke, AVN represents, among many things, the compromise of hard-hitting journalism for the sake of community, a value Luke has never mastered in his life. Paul Fishbein, by contrast, has risen to great power in porn by nurturing relationships. Luke has willingly sacrificed porn relationship after porn relationship for the sake of the story. Long after Luke will have left porn, AVN will be representing the hated (for it will be hated as long as God is loved) porn industry in a soft positive glow.
AVN functions for porn like Jules Streicher (Nazi propagandist) functioned for Adolf Hitler. AVN apologizes and justifies an industry many regard as evil.

Ron: Define "bath", please. The event did not make money for EROTICA LA but, it didn't lose a significant amount of money either. While not addressing exact amounts I will tell you that it cost me money out of my pocket. On the other hand I believe that these type of events serve as excellent P.R. for EROTICA LA in the position of continuing to "bridge the chasm between the adult industry and mainstream America". I do have several thoughts regarding future Halloween parties and will be seeking the input of industry, including talent, press, sponsors and companies alike. Please share your thoughts on improving and economizing the event.

Johnathan writes: I just read it. You'll be happy to hear that several libraries in the Minuteman Library Network of Eastern Massachusetts have bought the book and display it. I liked it. Though you post criticisms that say it's poorly written and organized, it is clearly at the same level as books written by the usually accepted investigative reporters. My capsule review, pretending I know nothing about the subject, is:
"A History of X" an enjoyably written, fairly light and easy reading book about the porn industry. It is in no way salacious or obscene. Unlike many investigative books, this is no polemic hammering over and over on the same points. It appears on the whole well-researched.
It would be impossible to write a comprehensive, readable history of sex films. There are too many threads to pull together, ranging from porn's relationship to the sexual revolution to organized crime involvement. This book touches on the major themes and is a useful primer.
I found the quality of the facts (or proof-reading) improved as the book moved closer to the present. For example, on p. 38, while talking about European porn in the 1960's, this sentence appears, "Over the next two decades, Europe published over 250 billion sexually explicity pornography magazines." That would be over 10 billion a year! Ten million is possible, but 10 billion hardcore magazines would be 2 per person on Earth each year.
The book's strongest sections are about the period when porn became legal and how it dabbled in the mainstream. It becomes clear that the shift into video and away from theaters leads to an increasing focus on fetishisms, like anal and degrading sex, that cater to the narrow audiences that rent tapes. In this way, porn is shown as moving farther away from what women like.
I got the strong impression that porn is ever-changing yet eternal, complex but simple; it responds to changes in society but presents the oldest acts known to humanity. Many of the pioneers of modern porn seem to have had mixed motives, with avarice competing with urges for sexual and cultural freedom.
The modern porn maker comes across as a businessman whose complexity comes across as a combination of business skills and fetishistic sexuality. It's clear that the moment of idealism has faded.
This book takes a unique point of view. It clearly condemns the sleaziness of the industry, but there is an underlying acceptance of the fact of porn's continued existence, indeed of the needs that porn clearly serves. Most books about porn are aimed at stirring outrage or at making claims about the role of porn, positive or negative, in the development of sexuality and in the progress of women in society. This book is far more clear-eyed.
Porn Stars Protect Their Rights
Porn stars are combing the internet to protect their rights. Some have trademarked their names and are going after people who are profiting from the use of porn stars names, including in meta tags (invisible words on internet page coding that attract search engine selection).

I am not a lawyer, and don't pretend to know everything there is to know about intellectual property law, but it is my understanding that if Bianca and others want to copyright or trademark their name, they are free to do so...actually...not completely sure if you can copyright an individual name...perhaps a real attorney would have more info on that...but...even if they could copyright or trademark it...they would be required to pursue any and all individuals or entities who used the copyright or trademark without specific permission. If they don't, they would lose their right to pursue it. Meaning...They would have to go after you, AVN, any magazine or website that uses their name. Not just certain website who use the name in a metatag. Images are another issue altogether.
I'd be interested to get more info from a real attorney about these issues. I believe however, that Bianca and others are a bit misguided in this. Let's face it...if this were possible, the National Enquirer and Time, People, even the New York Times would be in big trouble. Sorry, Bianca, but your name is in the public domain, and you are a public figure. The first time you signed a model release, you gave up a whole lot of rights to privacy and such. Let's hear from some lawyers on this.
