IEG To Buy Out Metro?
Bigscatkat writes on Yahoo: The rumor I hear is that IEG (Internet Entertainment Group) is talking to MGMA [Metro] about a buyout of sorts. This would give IEG a road into Nasdaq which they have been trying to get for some time. IEG is huge and has been trying to get an IPO of their own. If it's true then this stock will explode.
Luke: Metro stock has plunged from $4 a share to a $1:50 in the last three months.
FSC Changes
I hear that Steve Hirsch of Vivid Video will be the new president of the Free Speech Coalition, replacing Gloria Leonard. I also hear that the FSC has hired a new insurance commissioner, Patti Juneau of PMJ Insurance in Orange.

Email: I lurk around RAME sometimes to learn about the porno industry and I've been repulsed by the way fetishism is taking hold. I mean, I guess my point is you have to recapture that passion, or at least do a little self-analysis. I still think your site worked best when there was a voyeur aspect, when the reader is let in on a secret conversation, or meeting. But the focus should remain on the adult industry. Russell Williams writes: As one of the few people who has actually read the Meese Commission's Report, I was amused by Jarrad's attack on Edward Donnerstein. Donnerstein was the Meese Commission's favorite researcher; they cited his research in their report and in press releases at the time to "prove" that pornography causes violence against women. In fact, it showed nothing of the sort, and Donnerstein was angry about the misrepresentation of his research.
Just for the record, what Donnerstein's research showed was that in a laboratory setting, viewing certain kinds of violent images -- with or without sex -- increased by a small but significant amount the severity of pain that subjects would administer to others in a lab experiment. Viewing sexually explicit images (hard core porn) alone -- at least the materials he used -- produced a slight but statistically insignificant *reduction* in the level of pain that the subjects would administer. The question of whether viewing certain information causes harm, what constitutes harm, and what society should do about those findings, are all tricky ones. Certainly an examination of the research doesn't reveal the monolithic porn-peddling amoral agenda that ranters like Jarrad claim. Some of the researchers believe that violent (or "degrading", or especially sexually violent) images do cause harm and ought to be regulated. Some of them have joined the current trend of viewing things that cause societal harms (such as guns or drugs) as a public health issue, while others believe that "the law says I can have my pistol, my gin, and my porn collection, and it's anti-American to try to take them away. Guns/booze/Max Hardcore don't kill/rape/destroy people, people do". As is usually the case, reality is not so neat as those like Jarrad with an axe to grind would have you believe.

Teens Charged With Making Porn
UPI 10/14/98: Four teenagers from Mayfield Heights, Ohio, who made a porn video at home were reprimanded by a judge at their sentencing on charges of pandering sexually oriented materials to minors.
Juvenile Judge William Chinnock said the four teens - a girl and three boys - used their bodies not as "sacred vessels" but as "garbage cans." The video was made in 1997 when the girl was 15 and the boys were 17, 15, and 14.
The girl had bragged to friends she was "Mayfield Heights" own little porn star.
Investigators told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that copies of the tape are in the hands of hundreds of college and high school students across the nation.

June 5, 1968: Presidential candidate Senator Robert F. Kennedy, having just won the California Primary and en route to a press conference at the Ambassador Hotel, is assassinated by Sirhan Bishara Sirhan in a hotel kitchen-pantry area. Five others are wounded, only Kennedy's are fatal. Sirhan, a Palestinian Arab, was Sirhan was arrested at the scene--where a 22. caliber revolver was recovered--charged and convicted of first degree murder. [Sentenced to death, Sirhan is saved when U.S. Supreme Court voids the constitutionality of capital punishment; today Sirhan resides at Corcoran State Prison, California]
July 18, 1969: Senator Ted Kennedy, returning from a party on Martha's Vineyard given by his cousin Joe Gargan, drives off Dyke Bridge near Chappaquiddick. His 1967 Oldsmobile sinks into the shallow pond, carrying with it Mary Jo Kopechne, a 28-year-old staffer from his slain brother Robert's 1968 Presidential campaign. Kopechne drowns. Ted drives back to party, and returns to bridge with his cousin Joe. The two make several futile dives to the car. Kennedy swims across inlet to Edgartown, goes back to his motel, and makes 17 phone calls. None of them are to the police. Ted goes to sleep in his motel room, and the next morning, as though nothing untoward had happened, takes ferry back to Chappaquiddick, where Kopechne's body has already been found. Senator Kennedy reports the previous night's incident.
July 25, 1969: In Dukes County Courthouse on Martha's Vineyard, Senator Kennedy answers to the charge of "[operating] a certain motor vehicle upon a public way in said Edgartown and did go away after knowingly caused injury to Mary Jo Kopechne without stopping and making known his name, residence and the number of his motor vehicle." Ted pleads guilty to the offense, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in the state penitentiary. Judge James A. Boyle, taking into consideration the "unblemished record of the defendant," imposes the minimum jail sentence-- "two months in the house of corrections at Barnstable: suspended". Mary Jo Kopechne's parents are later compensated for the loss of their daughter with $50,000 from the Senator's accidental-death policy plus $90,923 from Ted's own funds.
Summer, 1969: Robert Kennedy Jr., along with cousins Christopher and Bobby Shriver, run amok in Hyannis, Massachusetts--where they are known as the HPTs, or Hyannis Port Terrors--embarking upon a two-summer-long jihad of petty crime that includes tossing cherry bombs and M-80 firecrackers at cars, untying boats from their moorings and bombing an old seawall with a Molotov cocktail. LSD and amphetamines were the HPT's drugs of choice; their motto: "Thou shalt not squeal." In one episode, Bobby Shriver was apprehended by a local policeman, whereupon his HPT confederate and future environmental activist Robert Kennedy Jr. thrust a live hawk into the officer's face.
October, 1969: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis uses a judo throw to assault New York Daily News photographer Marvin Finkelstein as he attempts to take her picture exiting Swedish quasi-porn movie "I Am Curious (Yellow)".
Fall, 1969: John F. Kennedy, Jr., startled by paparazzo Ron Galella's attempts to take John-John's photograph, falls off his bicycle. Jackie O., aghast, orders Secret Service agents to seize Galella and have him booked by NYPD. Later, claiming "grievous mental anguish," Mrs. Onassis seeks court injunctions to keep Galella at least 100 yards away from both Jackie and her children. Galella countersues for $1.3 million, claiming "false arrest [and] malicious prosecution" and restraint of his livelihood.
Summer, 1970: Hyannis Port Terror and future environmentalist Bobby Kennedy Jr., along with cousin and future Schwarzenegger brother-in-law Bobby Shriver, are arrested by an undercover officer on charge of "cannabis sativa possession." Bobby Shriver blabs to parents, "We never had any cannabis sativa. What is cannabis sativa, anyhow?" Cousins Shriver and Kennedy are sentenced to 13 months' probation.
Summer, 1971: Bobby Kennedy Jr.-- sitting in a car in Hyannis with his girlfriend, Kim-- spits a mouthful of ice cream in the face of a police officer as he approaches the car to question its occupants. The future environmental crusader is arrested on the spot and charged with "sauntering and loitering." Kennedy is convicted and spends the night in jail.
1972: Ron Galella's countersuit is dismissed in U.S. District Court by [Kennedy appointee] Judge Irving Ben Cooper. On appeal, Galella is permitted to come within 25 feet of Jackie. Aristotle Onassis, in an attempt to bilk Jackie's attorney of the $500,000 fee billed for the Galella matter, hires soon-to-be-disbarred future AIDS victim Roy Cohn.
August 13, 1973: Future U.S. Congressman Joe Kennedy II along with doomed brother David Kennedy, Joe's girlfriend Pam Kelly, and four others, are driving in Nantucket, Massachusetts, when Kennedy's Jeep flips. Joe, known local as "SuperKennedy," is later charged with "operating negligently so that the lives and safety of the public might be endangered." Joe enters a not-guilty please and is convicted. His driver's license is suspended for six months and he's fined $100. Joe girlfriend, Pam Kelly, is left with permanent paralysis of her legs. David Kennedy, 18, suffers fractured vertebrae, and is given morphine in the hospital--David's first meaningful encounter yet with the opiate that is destined to kill him.
April 25, 1975: Former First Family fixer-upper Max "Dr. Feelgood" Jacobson's license to practice medicine is revoked by New York State Board of Regents. Among charges leveled at Jacobson is "administering amphetamines without sound medical justification." Jacobson incurs legal expenses of more than $100,000. There are no offers of assistance, financial or otherwise, from former amphetamine patient Jackie O.. Five years later, Dr. Feelgood dies, broken and broke.
October 30, 1975: In Greenwich Connecticut, teenage Martha Moxley, is bludgeoned to death with a golf club eventually traced to the household of Thomas Skakel, a nephew of the Ethel and the late Robert F. Kennedy. Skakel, known locally for his violent disposition is--in addition to being the last person seen with the murdered 15-year-old--is also linked to the crime by an abundance of other circumstantial evidence. Investigators are foiled by Skakel family's high-power attorney Emanuel Margolis, and no charges are ever brought against the suspect. The words of former Connecticut Attorney General remain as true today as when they were spoken: "Thomas Skakel was a prime suspect almost immediately and he remains a prime suspect today."
September, 1978: The late RFK's son, David Kennedy, age 24, attempts drug buy at Manhattan's Shelton Plaza Hotel [at 118th Street and 8th Avenue in Harlem]. The deal goes awry; Kennedy is robbed and beaten. He is arrested when cops arrive. Percodam prescriptions found in Kennedy's car, leading to proceedings to strip Kennedy's physician, Dr. Lee Macht, of his medical license. [Until it is torn down in 1988, Shelton Plaza is henceforth referred to by NY cops as the "Kennedy Arms".] David Kennedy is eventually convicted and receives suspended sentence.
1980: David Kennedy arrested in Sacramento, California for drunk driving; five months later, David is again arrested in Sacrament for drunk driving. His driver's license is revoked.
April 25, 1980: David Kennedy is found dead of a drug overdose at the Brazilian Court Motel in Palm Beach.
April, 1980: Nancy Narleski, Ted Kennedy for President campaign worker and former fiancee of the late David Kennedy, accuses David's cousin and Ted-for-Prez-campaign-coworker Willy Smith of an attack in Philadelphia. Narleski further alleges that the candidate himself attempted to take liberties with her. [David Kennedy's seemingly enigmatic response at the time: she "should have known better."]
September, 1980: The late Robert Kennedy's offspring Christopher G. Kennedy is arrested for heroin possession in Boston's Roxbury ghetto while accompanying the actual buyer, a friend. Kennedy avoids a felony conviction by entering pharmacological "narcotic antagonist" program supplemented by psychotherapy. [Today, Chris Kennedy manages Chicago's Merchandise Mart, a prime Joe Kennedy asset recently sold by the family corporation].
Winter, 1980: Christopher Lawford, son of Peter Lawford and Patricia Kennedy, is arrested in Aspen, Colorado during Christmas holiday [while working on Uncle Ted's presidential campaign]--for posing as a physician in order to buy the prescription painkiller Darvon at a pharmacy. Charges are later dropped after Lawford completed probation. Christopher Lawford is presently an actor/producer whose resume includes roles in "Blankman" [1994] and "Kiss Me, Guido" [1997].
September 23, 1981: Persistent paparazzo Ron Galella follows a limousine carrying Jackie O. and current beau, married industrial-diamond tycoon Maurice Tempelsman. The limo drives directly to Manhattan's East 60th Street stationhouse, where Jackie lodges another formal complaint against Galella. Galella, at risk of being found in violation of the 1972 restraining order, faces charges that could send him to jail for seven years. Failing in his First Amendment defense, Judge Cooper--the same Kennedy appointee from the previous Galella/Onassis matter--orders Galella to pay the millionairess $100,000 to desist for all time from photographing her.
1981: Joseph P. Kennedy Enterprises, Inc.--a corporation run "for the benefit of the direct lineal descendants of Joseph P. Kennedy"--improperly acquires Washington, D.C. properties at significantly below-market prices. The deal is enabled by personal intervention of D.C.'s crackhead Mayor Marion Barry--whom Senator Ted Kennedy supports through consistently voting to transfer millions of dollars worth of federal property to the District of Columbia under the doctrine of "home rule". Barry--later to suffer a humiliating, videotaped crack sting by the FBI--also enables Kennedy Enterprises to forego "stringent" minority-ownership requirements on the properties. Moreover, federal regulations prohibit commercial transaction between elected federal officials and the federal government. These conflict-of-interest constraints are shrewdly avoided by Kennedy lawyers by creating additional layers of partnership to insulate the Democratic Senator from his involvement. Documents relating to this illegal sweetheart deal bear the signature of Kennedy brother-in-law R. Sargent Shriver.
May 16, 1983: Robert Kennedy Jr. cronies Eric Breindel, a 28-year-old assistant to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan [and future editorial page director/vice-president of Rupert Murdoch's New York Post] and Winston Proude, a D.C. attorney, are arrested for heroin possession. Both plead guilty. Ethel Kennedy--outraged at Proude for taking younger son Christopher to the explicit gay-themed movie "Cruising"--later boasts of dropping the dime on Proude and Breindel. Authorities, concerned that classified materials may be compromised by the heroin matter, interrogate Breindel regarding drug use in government. Among the names that comes up is Bobby Kennedy Jr. [In addition to being vigorously skewered by Kurt Andersen's Spy mag in the late 80s, Eric Breindel's role in this affair are well-documented in the New York Times, 5-19-83 plus Time's "Crash of a Shooting Star" and Newsweek's , "Drugs and the high life", both dated 5-30-83]. [Red-baiting, ultra-hawkish, ex-junkie Eric Breindel died in 1998.]
August 3, 1983: Bobby Kennedy Jr., 29, exhibits unusual behavior on a Republic airline heading to Rapid City, South Dakota. The pilot radios ahead for ambulance to meet plane on arrival. Kennedy is interrogated by police, and gives his name as "Robert Francis." He is let go but police keep his bag. Two days later, police, with a court order, open bag and find a gram of heroin--a felony carrying two-years' imprisonment. Four days after his flight's arrival, Kennedy is arrested.
June, 1984: Kennedy cousin Willy Smith beats up 21-year-old British socialite Alexandra Marr in New York City when she spurns his advances. Fearful of Kennedy family retribution were she to press charges, Marr lets the matter go and returns to England shortly thereafter.
1985: Rory Katharine Elizabeth Kennedy, youngest child of Ethel and the late Robert Kennedy, is arrested along in front of South American embassy in Washington, D.C., for participating in anti-apartheid protest.
1988: Willy Smith rapes a 21-year-old woman in his Washington, D.C. apartment. The woman, a classmate of Smith's at Georgetown University Medical School, declines to press charges after a lawyer advises her that "Willy would most likely get off by saying [she] asked for it" since the "incident" involves alcohol.
July, 1988: Senator Ted Kennedy's wife Joan is arrested for drunk driving in Centerville, Massachusetts. She pleads not guilty.
March 30, 1991: Willy Smith rapes a 29-year-old single mother on the lawn of the Kennedy family's estate following a night of drinking with his uncle Ted and his cousin Patrick Kennedy. When the police arrive on Easter Sunday afternoon to investigate the sexual-assault complaint, they are told by the family's security operative, former FBI agent William Barry, that neither Ted nor Willy are on the premises, when in fact they are [obstruction of justice].
May 14, 1991: Joan Kennedy is arrested again for drunk driving--in Quincy, Massachusetts. The arresting officer finds a bottle of Smirnoff vodka on the car seat, and a Breathalyzer test shows Joan's alcohol level to be nearly twice the legal limit.
May 30, 1990: Joan Kennedy is found guilty of drunk driving and is sentenced to 14 days in an alcohol-rehabilitation center. She is also sentenced to 90 days in jail--suspended as long as she commits no further violations for two years.
July, 1991: Senator Ted Kennedy is named as one of the top 50 parking-violation scofflaws in Arlington County, Virginia--and found Kennedy to be in arrears for seven ignored parking tickets totaling $310. According to a family spokesman, "It was an oversight."
August 30, 1991: Senator Kennedy testifies before Palm Beach County grand jury considering obstruction-of-justice charges in sexual-battery case against Willy Smith. Ted, appearing before the court under subpoena, explains his presence as follows: "We were invited down by the Florida authorities to participate in the process."
March, 1998: Scandal-plagued Rep. Joe Kennedy II--representing the same Massachusetts Congressional district as his slain Uncle Jack--announces his departure from politics. Later descibed, along with his brother Michael [killed in a New Years Eve, 97 skiing accident] by his doomed bisexual cousin John-John in George as "poster boys for bad behavior," cousin Joe attained wide notoriety for forcing his first wife to grant an annulment of their marriage.

Kurtz writes: Luke, you have the wrong guy in this paragraph. The babysitter molester was Michael, the one who died in the skiing stupidity. The girl's parents are very wealthy and, though the mother was once pulled off a roof in Back Bay while apparently ready to jump, they refused to bring charges. The girl went on to Boston University - don't know if she's still there. Michael actually tried to contact her again. It took a fair amount of therapy for her to realize she'd been abused. Then again, we must imagine what her home life was.
Joe didn't "force" his first wife Sheila into an annulment. He asked for one, though they had kids. Not a good thing to do, but his second wife is a Catholic and wanted to be able to receive communion - without the annulment, Joe remains married in the eyes of the Church and her marriage is invalid. Sheila refused and Joe went ahead and got the annulment essentially without her participation and, to a degree, without her knowledge. Sheila's book makes the point that an annulment says that the marriage never existed as a union of souls, something she felt denied the legitimacy of the relationship, which was long, and which could affect the mental and emotional health of their twins. Joe calls the Church's position "Catholic gobbledygook" and sees the annulment as just a hoop the Church puts in the way. On the whole, Joe has a reputation as a pretty good guy, with the exception that he's famously prone to temper tantrums.
You could have included Teddy being photographed f---ing a woman in his boat in broad daylight off Hyannis. And of course the famous bit about Rose that sex was only for having children and thus she stopped after the last kiddy was born. Or maybe she was worried about picking up something from the tarts that Joe senior bedded. In your bit about JFK and the nazi, you could have included Joe's igominy as US ambassador to Great Britain where he openly favored the Nazis. His term there was considered a national disgrace.
The Porn Profs' Plans for Your Kids

I recently spent a day in Hell.
I attended the World Pornography Conference (August 6-9, 1998) at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Los Angeles, and I was probably the only pro-decency person among the several hundred people who took part.
"Eroticism and the First Amendment" was the title of the confab, which drew advocates and defenders of porn from as far away as Russia, Japan, South Africa, and Australia. For eight very long hours I rubbed shoulders and even broke bread with top obscenity lawyers, the porn industry's political shills from the ACLU, porn video "actresses," and "academics" from major universities, particularly California State University at Northridge (CSUN). The town of Northridge is the world capital of porn video production.
The purpose of the proceedings seemed to be to advance a plan of the incredibly wealthy, $8 billion-a-year porn industry — namely, to get the public to accept the now-discredited Prof. Alfred Kinsey's anything-goes approach to sex as the basis for granting teaching credentials to all sex "educators" in both our public and our religious schools. Judging from what I heard, the plan is well under way.
I focused on the talks on "research and effects." The "academics" remarks were meant to provide the necessary pseudo-scientific intellectual basis for this all-out attack upon morality and reason. What these "intellectuals" said should frighten us citizens into action.
The first talk I heard was by CSUN's librarian, who described her efforts to protect the school's tax-supported porn collection. The only "academic" defenses she gave for this porn pile were "free speech," "academic freedom," the "First Amendment," and opposing "censorship."
In the next "academic" session I heard, the professor quoted tax-supported "researcher" Dr. Ed Donnerstein of the University of California at Santa Barbara. Donnerstein maintains that only violence in porn is dangerous. The speaker did not mention that porn was a form of violence in itself. Nor did he mention the money that Donnerstein has taken from Playboy and other porn interests to do some of his "research."
Dr. William Griffitt of Kansas State University informed us that porn caused no adverse effects, and that, why, even education can be distasteful to some — e.g., showing explicit sex films in the classroom. He cited the discredited, ACLU-dominated Presidential Commission on Pornography (1970) as showing minimal effects from making and using porn.
When I asked about the more recent Reagan-era [Attorney General Meese] Commission that found porn harmful, he dismissed it as politically inspired. He carefully dodged the issue of the link between porn and public health and safety problems such as rape, venereal disease, AIDS, incest, serial murders, child molestation, and sex addiction.
Griffitt quoted those "scholars" who support him, and largely dismissed the findings of Drs. Cline, Weaver, Zillman and others whose research points to severe harm from porn use.
He said not a word about the enormous increase in sex-related pathologies since Kinsey, as documented by Dr. Judith Reisman in her explosive new book, Kinsey: Crimes and Consequences. I asked Griffitt about Kinsey, whose famous "research" Dr. Reisman has shown was a fraud that involved hundreds of sex crimes against children. He saw Kinsey as a very fine researcher, a real contributor to learning and teaching about sex. Porn, Dr. Griffitt assured us, was a valuable research tool.
One professor from California State University at Long Beach told how he brought "porn stars" into his classroom as guest lecturers. He told us this shielded him from direct criticism. (Conference organizers brought out porn "actresses" to speak, too; no one talked about how many of these women use drugs, die young, or are lesbians who were abused by their fathers.) The objective, scholarly title of one California State instructor's lecture was, "There Is No Relationship Between Pornography and Violence Against Anyone Or Anything."
On and on they droned. The "research" of "sexperts" such as Kinsey, Masters and Johnson, Wardell Pomeroy and their direct descendants is being peddled endlessly. It comes from Vern Bullough's Center for Sex Research, from the other Kinsey-spawned sex "research" and/or teacher credentialing centers such as those in San Francisco and at CSUN, and from many other "centers" and "institutes" for sex "research" and credentialing.
But what about the real world? What about all the academic studies that show a direct connection between porn use and sex crimes and disease? None of the "scholars" mentioned Dr. Reisman's monumental findings about what they are doing to put our children and our society in the hands of Kinseyite cranks and their wealthy porn czar patrons.
Even the so-called legitimate entertainment industry received praise at this gathering, for its use of "erotic" images in Hollywood movies since Tinseltown discarded the movie decency code in the 1960s. Getting dirt on the big screen made it much easier to spread obscenity worldwide.
Did you know that 25 percent of all the videos sold and rented in the United States last year were porn videos? Or that organized crime controls 90 percent of the distribution of porn videos in America, including those in your friendly suburban video store? Or that the Clinton Administration ended almost all federal prosecutions of the porn czars? In large measure, you can thank the people at this conference.
The speakers definitely did not bring up Dr. Reisman's 30 years of research into how the Kinseyan sexology societies and teacher-accrediting agencies have metastasized sex "educators" out into our children's classrooms through such devices as their "Commission on Accreditation."
None of the learned professors pointed out the obvious similarities between this process and the way Soviet "educators" disseminated Lysenko's pseudo-scientific Communist theories on the brain, and Germany's teaching institutions accredited the "researchers" of Nazi racial theories.
These supposedly unbiased "academics" did not want to discuss Dr. Reisman's chronicle of the damage done by the Kinseyans through the incredible explosion of sex crimes and venereal disease (not to mention AIDS) that we have suffered since the 1950s, when the obscenity laws were still enforced and we had the movie production code.
They did not want the public to learn what she has written about the incredible and immediate impact of porn on the user, how he literally "grows new brain" whether he wants to or not. Nor did they want to admit that one of Kinsey's closest collaborators, Hermann Muller, did his "research" under the Nazi and Communist regimes, which could easily provide children and adults as "subjects."
The Kinsey model of loveless, dangerous, anything-goes sex is now the only model that teachers get credentialed to teach in America's schools. We parents and taxpayers must de-credential the Kinsey-clone sex "educators" who are teaching our children that condoms should replace chastity, that lust is better than love.
The damage that the "sexperts" are doing to our boys and girls is no less harmful than that done by Soviet and Nazi "educators" in the 1930s and 1940s. In those cases, crackpot pseudo-science led to the deaths of millions. In our country, venereal disease, AIDS, rape, murder, molestation, incest, sex addiction and the other effects of "harmless" porn are killing the minds, souls and even the lives of countless young people, not to mention adults.
A determined citizenry can still make a difference. Read up on Kinsey, porn, and the sex "education" industry. Support Dr. Reisman's "R.S.V.P. America" program to end Kinseyan "sex ed." Join a no-compromise anti-porn group. Educate your clergyman. Call the talk shows. Contact your lawmaker. It is late in the day.
As Dr. Reisman says, it's high time we pried the cold, dead hands of Dr. Kinsey off our children.
Fred the Lawyer writes about Monday's rant on the WPC: I'll bet you posted Mr. Jasper's article to get a rise out of people. Well, there's nothing like a good old dose of bombast (from either the left or the right--I'm not picky) to get a chuckle out of me.
1. I didn't realize it until now, but the World Pornography Conference was a brilliant, albeit unoriginal, idea. For years, the tobacco industry has been funding the Tobacco Institute which in turn funds "research" on tobacco as part of their general PR efforts. The porno industry could make lots of headway in their quest for legitimacy by doing likewise. It certainly couldn't hurt their image. It appears that they have started down this well-trod path. What they should do is start funding their favorite researchers. I must say, this is a trend worth following to see what becomes of it.
2. I was not at the World Pornography Conference, but I am quite skeptical of Mr. Jasper's claim (or implication) that it was all a giant conspiracy run by and for a bunch of pedophiles. I have a feeling that Mr. Jasper is simply trying to get a rise out of the right wing, and has no compunctions about sacrificing accuracy if it means riling up the troops in the culture wars. Well, Luke, you were there. Do you honestly think this was a giant pedophile conspiracy?
Luke: I had no idea how many supporters of pedophilia were at the Conference. I was surprised and interested by Jasper's assertions and now that I think about it, it makes sense that many of those who support a general widening of the definition of acceptable sexual expression, would support pedophilia. And that pedophilia is cause for concern.
Fred: 3. I have no trouble believing that our fearless legislators in Sacramento (Spanish for sacrament) got on their high horse about how University resources were used to further the porno industry. Doubtless, university resources are used to promote private industry every day. Show me an engineering department that does not do research sponsored by private industry. Show me a business school department that does not do research sponsored by prvate industry. As I see it, the only difference is that the legislators don't like this particular industry. However, there is certainly nothing unethical about a university working on something that aids a private company or industry, unless you have an axe to grind with that company or industry.
4. University of Nevada Las Vegas has a gaming department that is geared toward helping the gaming industry. Nobody in Nevada is up in arms about a public university that serves this privately owned vice business. Rather, it is only if you have an axe to grind with pornography that you could be up in arms about this.
5. I wager that the amount of CSU money involved was paltry. The porno industry could have raised that much money in its sleep. Perhaps the academics in question could simply raise the money from private sources, and everyone would go away happy.
6. Which leaves us with the question, is this a legitimate thing for an academic to study pornography? I suspect, Luke, that you posted Mr. Jasper's diatribe in an effort to lure some poor slob into coming forward and arguing this cause. Well, there's nothing good on television, there's no beer in the fridge, and I have nothing better to do, so here goes.
7. First, the mere fact that the "researchers" have unpopular findings or conclusions is no ground to object to their work. After all, the Bell Curve probably riled up more angry public opinion than any academic piece of research I have ever heard of, and there is no doubt whatsoever that the subjects explored in that book were worthy of exploration by academics. You might think that the authors were jerks or geniuses, but the subject itself is worthy of academic exporation. Similarly, the mere fact that the reports by researchers of pornogaphy are objectionable does not make it an illegitimate subject for research.
8. Whether or not pornograpy is immoral does not take away from its legitimacy as a subject of study. When I was in college, I took a course in criminology. We discussed gambling, prostitution, organized crime, etc. There is no question whatsoever that criminology is a legitimate area of academic inquiry. The mere fact that the subject matter is illegal and immoral activity does not take it outside the ambit of legitimate academic inquiry.
9. The mere fact that the issues discussed in a study of pornography are the same issues that involve the general "culture wars" does not take it outside the ambit of legitimate study. After all, the right wing constantly harps on the fact that pornography has a deleterious effect on our society. Is it not a legitimate area of inquiry to see if that's so? Gays allege that they are gay, not because of environmental factors, but because that is the way they are. Is it not a legimate area of inquiry to see if that's so? Was it a ligitimate area of inquiry for Kinsey or others to see exactly what is common among humans, sexually?
10. Incidentally, my criminology professor was libertarian. He advocated legalizing narcotics, gambling and prostitution. (At least that is what he told us. I'm not sure whether he was just trying to get a rise out of us. If he was, it worked at the time.) The mere fact that his conclusions were contrary to popular wisdom, and would have exasperated the religeous right does not take criminology outside the ambit of legitimate academic inquiry.
11. It seems to me that the only real objections to the study of pornography as an area of academic inquiry are these: a) a particular piece of research trite; b) it merely masks the fact that the researcher is simply trying to get his jollies while masking this effort with a veneer of academia; or c) the results are tantamount to someone concluding that the earth is flat, i.e. not only objectively wrong but silly.
12. As to these arguments, you would have to look at a particular piece of research, or a particular researcher. I don't think these points could be answered in the abstract.
O.K. That's the best I can do in twenty minutes at 11:00 p.m. I would conclude with one particular thought, however. Even if the researchers in question are trite, wrong and objectively silly, they have prodded William Jasper into going ballistic, and penning a lengthy piece of bombast. At the very least, they have provided me with at least one hour of moderate amusement, and that is certainly a laudible goal for any human to strive for.
Time Warner Supports Pornography

Time-Warner, in 1992 In October 1992, Madonna's pornographic book, "Sex," went on sale. Published by Warner Books (a subsidiary of Time Warner), the book depicted frontal nudity and simulated sex including anal/oral sex, bestiality, homosexuality, masturbation, orgies and sexual violence (bondage, domination, flagellation, rape, torture). In addition to mainstream bookstores, at least one "adult video store" in New York City also offered the book for sale.
Also in October 1992, Warner Books and Warner Records (which published Madonna's album, "Erotica") co-hosted a party in Manhattan celebrating the release of "Sex." As described in news accounts (New York Daily News and New York Post,) the party included:
* A woman on all fours getting whipped with a cat-o'-nine tails Couples feigning sex on mounted platforms
* Guys in leather getups hanging from chains from the ceiling Floral displays with kinky sexual messages
* One guy getting Madonna's face tattooed on his butt
* "Two androgynes in the surplices and habits of altar boys were offering incense; behind them was a giant still from Madonna's video: she was naked, hitchhiking...A huge silhouette of a cross was thrown upon a wall and 97 candles burned brightly"
In response to a complaint about "Sex," Ellen Herrick of Warner Books wrote in a letter, dated 12/16/92: "One of this country's earliest principles was the right to think and live as each individual chooses. There are many different interests, agendas and tastes in our society...It is this very diversity that gives America its strength and that allows our nation to be the beacon for freedom and democracy throughout the world."
In 1992, among other things, Time Warner also offered "cable versions" of hardcore porn flicks on cable TV systems it owned and distributed a steady flow of indecent and violent programming on HBO. In 1992, Warner Records marketed the song, "Cop Killer." In 1992, the American Family Association named Time Warner as the third leading sponsor of sex, violence and profanity on broadcast TV.
Time Warner's Porn Business Today
1. Leased Access Porn
As in 1992 so in 1998, Manhattan Cable, a Time Warner-owned cable TV system in New York City, provides pornography on a leased access channel that comes as part of basic cable service. But in 1998, it no longer has a legal excuse for doing so because in 1996 the Supreme Court upheld a law proposed by Morality in Media that allows cable operators to prohibit indecent programming on leased access channels. Prior to 1996, federal law prevented operators from exercising "editorial control" over programming on these channels, and Time Warner hid behind this law whenever it received complaints about the porn.
As the New York Post described the problem in an editorial, "Befouling the city's TV screens" (8/14/90): "If you want to see an issue being ducked, watch New York's political leaders trying to avoid responsibility for the hardcore pornography being beamed out every night on one of New York's cable TV '[leased] access' channels. Manhattan Cable, owned by Time Warner Co., claims it must by law, give 'independent contractors' full control over what they air on the station. So the cable company is 'not responsible.'...As a result, every night, 'independent producers' use the channels to spew out pornography. Turn on your TV at 10 p.m., and you will find closeups of a nude man fondling himself. Or a nude 'little girl' talking about sexual relations with 'daddy.' No one, you understand -- not Time Warner...admits to approving any of this. It's the responsibility, they say of the 'independent producers' -- whose programs are, transparently, nothing more than advertising vehicles for the phone sex and prostitution rings which take up the majority of [leased]-access air time. Manhattan Cable will tell you it can provide a blocking device so that this stuff won't be beamed into your home. Well fine...But why should the burden be on those who don't want hardcore pornography available at the flick of a child's finger?"
Recently, Don Hewitt, executive producer of "60 Minutes," was quoted in the Wall Street Journal about Manhattan Cable's leased access porn channel ("Mr. Hewitt Speaks His Mind," Wall Street Journal, 10/13/97): "And who knew, back in the early days of TV..., [Mr. Hewitt] asks, that...in Manhattan there would be a Channel 35, which came to audiences courtesy of Time Warner Cable -- 'the amalgamation...of two American giants, Warner Brothers and Time.' And that this amalgamation...is now, for a good part of the night in Manhattan, devoted to a different business: namely, Mr. Hewitt explains, 'the whorehouse business.'"
According to the March 1997 issue of Adult Video News, Time Warner partially funded "Screwed," a film about Al Goldstein's porn empire. Part of that empire, "Midnight Blue," airs on Manhattan Cable's leased access channel, Channel 35.
2. Pay-per-view porn
Time Warner also continues to offer "cable versions" of hardcore porn films on cable TV systems it owns. In the opinion of Morality in Media, some "cable versions" of hardcore porn films are obscene, and Time Warner and every other cable system that offers these films should be investigated for possible violations of the federal law (18 USC 1468) that prohibits distribution of obscene matter on cable and satellite TV.
According to a front-page article in the Wall Street Journal, Playboy and "Spice," two porn channels that Time Warner cable systems have offered, were both customers of a company controlled by Ken Guarino, an alleged organized crime associate. In 1996, another company owned by Guarino (and reportedly one of the world's largest distributors of porn videos) entered a guilty plea to a Federal obscenity charge. In 1997, Guarino and Natale Richichi entered guilty pleas to conspiring to defraud the United States. Had the case proceeded to trial, the Government said in the Memorandum of Plea Agreement that it would have presented evidence that Richichi is a "capo in the Gambino crime family of La Cosa Nostra" and that Guarino made "tribute payments" to Richichi for protection of his multi-million dollar pornography empire against extortion attempts by other factions of the LCN.
On many cable systems, including Time Warner-owned systems, the signals for these films also "bleed" so that the programming can be heard and seen in the homes of nonsubscribers.
3. HBO porn
In Playboy v. U.S. (1996), Playboy challenged a federal law enacted intended to address this "bleeding" problem. In upholding the law, the federal district court noted that Playboy had complained that Time Warner-owned HBO did not have to comply with the law even though it presented "programming that is an equivalent to the sexually oriented programming shown on the Playboy network."
4. Hollywood porn In 1997, New Line Cinema, a Time Warner-owned company, also produced "Boogie Nights," which celebrated the lives of people who made hardcore porn films during the late '70s and early '80s.
5. Miscellaneous moral trash Time Warner is also part owner of "Comedy Central" which distributes "South Park," a program that features 3rd graders whose vulgarity, blasphemy and anti-social behavior make "Beavis and Butt-Head" look like choir boys. Time Warner is also part owner of The WB Television Network, whose pride and joy is the sex-saturated soap for teens, "Dawson's Creek." In addition to "Dawson's Creek," three other Warner Brothers' programs ("The Drew Carey Show," "Friends," and "Veronica's Closet") are on The Media Research Center list of the least family-friendly shows on prime-time TV (L. Brent Bozell, "Twelve Rotten Apples Picked From the Bottom of Hollywood's Anti-Family Barrel," Human Events, 7/24/98).
Time Warner is also on the American Family Association's "Dirty Dozen" list of advertisers who sponsor the most prime-time TV sex, vulgarity, and violence. In 1997, Warner Records released the song, "Smack My Bitch Up," by the band, The Prodigy. According to New York Daily News staff writer, Jim Farber ("NOW sez hit tune smacks of sexism," 12/5/97), Prodigy is the second most successful act on Madonna's Maverick label, which is half-owned by Warner Brothers.
Conclusions
What I have just described is the proverbial tip of the iceberg. But in listing some of Time Warner's many sins, I do not mean to imply that Time Warner is the only offender. The cultural sewage that emanates from New York City and Los Angeles has many, many contributors, including CBS (home of radio and TV's preeminent garbage mouth, Howard Stern), Disney, and Viacom. I do intend to remind citizens who are deeply concerned about our nation's growing "moral crisis" that Time Warner is still also a major source of cultural pollution.
As to what citizens can do about Time Warner's actions that injure youth, families, and the moral fabric of society: they should, when appropriate, make complaints to prosecutors about possible violations of federal and state obscenity laws and to the Federal Communications Commission about possible violations of the broadcast indecency law. They should also write to Time Warner CEO Gerald Levin, Time Warner building, 75 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10019 (212-484-8000) or send e-mail at webmaster@timewarner.com. They should avoid viewing or listening to Time Warner-owned magazines, TV programming, films, books, records, sports teams, etc.

Erotica USA bills itself as "an event promoting mainstream tips and tools for lovers looking for a zestier brand of romance." The emphasis on "mainstream" here is important. According to the popularly accepted definition of "mainstream," Erotica USA organizers are telling us that the tips and tools they equip lovers with are socially acceptable activities that most people in your neighborhood do in their bedrooms even though they might not have the guts to let you know that's what they are up to.
So, what kind of sexual activities do the people hawking their wares at this "trade show" say are mainstream? Well, for starters, bondage, torture, sadism, and masochism. Organizers say these "mainstream," socially acceptable activities are promoting romance in your mainstream neighborhood. You tell me, does the average person feel romantic when they are being tortured? Does the mainstream man or woman fall more deeply in love with someone with someone who ties them up, humiliates them, or beats them with a whip?
Far from promoting romance, these activities destroy marital relationships and devastate human sexual response. The message of bondage, torture, and S&M is that having power over your partner to humiliate them, cause them pain, and deny them freedom of motion is a real turn-on. But, instead of creating the wildly erotic highs this stuff promises, bondage, torture, and S&M pack a one-two psychological punch that makes it a real psychological turn-off.
Here's why: Sexual arousal is controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The PNS is in action when we are relaxed and open to a situation. We can't force ourselves to become aroused; arousal is a by-product of feeling trusting about what is happening to us. On the other hand, if we become anxious or afraid, our sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is activated. The SNS is our "fight or flight" hot button. It acts as an inhibitor, shutting off the PNS and therefore stopping the growing sexual excitement.
When we get to the orgasmic phase, the muscular contractions that form the orgasmic response are regulated by the SNS. Since the SNS is dominant when we are active rather than passive, this means that in order to experience orgasm, we need the freedom to actively move our bodies. In other words, true sexual arousal is closely connectted with "letting go" and occurs when we feel safe. Orgasm is a function of "going for it" and occurs when we are free to make body movements.
The bottom line is this: The vendors at this so-called "Sex Fest" are doing something far more insidious than merely packaging fantasy. They are perpetrating fraud. The sexual activities they are promoting are actually blocking true sexual arousal. What they are selling is an anxiety arousal - hardly the stuff enduring relationships are made of. Yet the unsuspecting people who buy this stuff will be left to wonder what's wrong with them when they find they can't get no satisfaction.
Some will say, "Well, this is a free country. I don't have to do this but other people have the right to deceive themselves if they want to." So, I will close with this question: "Do you want the mainstream man or woman, the man or woman who lives next door to you, the man or woman who teaches your children or works at the desk next to yours, do you want that man or woman to think that it's socially acceptable to get turned on by terrifying and torturing another human being?"
If pornography made us healthy, we would be healthy by now

Erotica USA arrives on April 15, 1999 and describes itself as "titillating but not nasty'. As a psychotherapist, this description is confusing. This show promotes of a number of psychiatric disorders and symptoms as if they are normal such as fetishes and sadomasochism. Are they trying to promote psychologically healthy relationships? Hardly! If pornography made us healthy, we would be healthy by now. If the sex industry made us healthy, then those in the sex industry would be the healthiest and have the healthiest relationships. The reality is far from that.
Damage to women which precedes working in the sex industry
Most strippers, as with other women who work in the sex industry, are adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Research indicates the number is between 60%-80%. One study found that 35% of strippers have Multiple Personality Disorder, 55% had Borderline Personality Disorder, and 60% had Major Depressive Episodes, These are severe psychiatric problems and many of them are connected to childhood sexual abuse. These are women who when they were little girls would get into their beds each night and roll themselves into a fetal position and every night he would come in and peel her open. The physical and visual invasion of little girl's bodies damages them psychologically and gives them a psychologically unhealthy view of sexuality. Often as adults they reenact their childhood trauma by working as strippers, Playboy models, and prostitutes. The men who, now as customers, physically and visually invade the adult women's bodies, reenact the role of the perpetrator. These women work in the sex industry because it feels like home.
Damage to women which comes from working in the sex industry
Among strippers, eating disorders are rampant. Many of the women starve, vomit, abuse exercise or laxatives to become the unnatural shape that is demanded of them. Plastic surgery is almost invariably required especially artificial breasts to produce unnaturally large breasts. This surgery is considered a necessity despite the evidence that artificial breasts interfere with mammograms, and are implicated in autoimmune deficiency disorders in the women, and digestive disorders in the babies of the women who have had the surgery.
Strippers are often substance abusers as well; one study found the number to be 40%. Sometimes this is-because they have to numb themselves to be able to do the work they do. Often the consumption of alcohol is required on the job. Strippers who refuse to drink or who refuse to accept drinks from customers can be fired, coerced or threatened by bosses. Even strippers who have told their superiors that they are alcoholics who attend AA meetings are told that they have to drink on the job. Sometimes customers tip the strippers with cocaine. Cocaine addiction is common.
Their personal lives and relationships suffer as well. Women who work in the sex industry have only a 25% chance of making a marriage that will last as long as three years. If the sex industry and pornography made us sexually healthy and improved marriages, one would expected that those most involved would have the healthiest marriages but just the opposite is true. These women often hate men and disparage them. They believe that all men are capable of the attitudes and permission-giving beliefs that allow men to feel entitled to buy the physical and visual invasion of women's bodies. Many strippers say they would never date the men who go to strip clubs because they find these men disgusting. Often the only kind of "dates" that these women make with customers is for prostitution. The hatred of men by strippers is deep and widespread. They describe their inner dialogue while they are stripping and it is virulent hate speech against the customers they pretend to desire. The psychological demand to numb themselves or to cover their disgust for their customers exacts a terrible toll on the strippers.
The job that they do is fraught with dangers and unpleasantry. In one study 100% of the strippers reported some kind of physical or verbal abuse on their jobs. Verbal abuse by customers is extremely common with 91% reporting incidents. They were routinely called degrading names like cunt (52%), whore (61%), and bitch (85%). Besides the verbal abuse, all endured some type of physical abuse on the job. Despite the fact that it is illegal to touch a stripper, strippers reported that customers grabbed them by the arm (88%), grabbed their breast (73%), or their buttock (91%). Customers at strip clubs often assault the women. Customers pulled their hair (27%), pinched them (58%), slapped them (24%), or bite them (36%). They are often attacked in the str1p club in front of bodyguards and other audience members.
If men would do this to women in public, what would they do to women in private? Strippers are often raped. Strippers have reported that they have been followed home (70%) and have been stalked (42%). The fact that strippers work with bodyguards is evidence to the fact that their fears that this activity causes violence are realistic. Strippers may have bodyguards while they are at work but when they leave, they are as vulnerable as is the rest of the female population. Most women interact with these individuals without the benefit of a bodyguard. All women will have to interact with the strip club patrons who have permission-giving beliefs about the use of women's bodies. Strip club patrons do not apply their beliefs only to women who work in the sex industry. Strippers, having been damaged by their own sexual abuse, now go on to work in an industry that encourages the beliefs that will allow behavior that hurts all women. The unbroken chain of victim and victimizer continues.
Self-esteem damage is invariable in this profession but, because these are survivors of abuse, some of the strippers claim to feel better about themselves by stripping, This level of denial is typical of untreated survivors and addicts. They are so disempowered and so damaged by their early abuse that they have no concept of healthy self-esteem or of self-respect for the human body and spirit. This lack of self-esteem mixed with their unhealthy attitude about sexuality causes them to think that selling their bodies will make them feel better. Many strippers move on to become prostitutes. Much of their thinking and behavior is conceptually similar to the thinking and behavior of other addicts.
Damage to men which comes from involvement in the sex industry
For the man who becomes sex addicted there are an enormous host of problems that could be anticipated. Often the addict anticipates few of the outcomes; denial is a large part of the problem. Research indicates and my clinical practice supports that approximately 40% of sex addicted males will lose their spouse. Severe financial consequences will be suffered by about 59% with some losing all of their savings and earnings. in general, about 27% will either lose their jobs or be demoted. Among professionals who are sex addicted, as many as 40% will lose their professions due to their sexual acting out.
With high-risk sex being so frequent among this group, health concerns are typical. Sexually transmitted diseases range from those that are readily treatable to those that are deadly. The risk of receiving a disease is added to by the risk of transmission to others. In some cases, the disease may be transmitted to sex industry workers but many cases it is transmitted to the non-sex addicted spouse. Family life is frequently disrupted due to abandonment of the wife and children or severe friction if the family stays physically intact. Arrest is always a threat and also destabilizes the family. Suicide is not infrequent. The consequences and the pain caused by this disorder are severe and yet the addict does not stop. This is an indication of the strength of the pull. The life of the sex addict is filled with pain and shame as the downward spiral takes hold.
Substance abuse is common with alcohol, marijuana and cocaine being the most often drugs of choice of the sex addict. Steven Chambers, who treats drug addicts at the Coatesville Veterans' Administration hospital, has described the damage done to his clients by sex and pornography addiction. Those who have drug relapses most frequently relapse because of the sex/pornography addiction through cocaine prostitutes, addicted sex partners, etc.
Sex and pornography addiction has become such a wide spread problem that, with very little publicity, there are now 80 AA-type groups for sex and pornography addiction in the Delaware Valley. In my clinical practice I have found this addiction to be less likely to remit than cocaine addiction and more likely to relapse. Most traditional addiction treatment starts with detoxification to remove the substance (cocaine, alcohol, etc.) from the body. Sex addiction from pornography, whether it is print, video, or live pornography like stripping, produces mental imagery which is permanently implanted in the mind of the user and is scaled in by brain chemistry. This is the first addictive substance for which there is no hope for detoxification.
The minimal user of pornography also shows signs of significant negative impact. The damage to marriage of visual infidelity is massive, Sex addicts often have no conception of healthy sexuality and their partners often end up engaging in degrading behaviors. I often hear complaints from partners who feel degraded by a sex addict who watches pornography during the sex act with them and much worse. The partners of sex addicts are often depressed, low in self-esteern, have eating disorders, and sexual dysfunction brought on by body self consciousness or sexual numbing and who fake their orgasms. The damage caused by the addict is not just to the women with whom they are partners. The damage is also seen in the damage to the general respect of women, inability to be intimate in healthy ways, and inability to interact with women in a professional environment in respectful ways. This encourages sexual harassment on the job.
Pornography is also hate speech about men. The sex industry spreads the myth that male sexuality is viciously narcissistic, predatory and out of control, It is not just strippers who come to think of all men as sexual "pond-scum". This myth about men makes it difficult for women to give men the trust and respect that they are due and damages the image that men have of themselves and of male sexuality.
Damage to the society in general which comes from the sex industry
The level of sexual violence in the society is at epidemic proportions. We are experiencing a sexual holocaust. One in 8 women are raped, 50% of females will be sexually harassed on their jobs. By the time a female in this country is 18 years old, 38% have been sexually molested. We are the most sexually violent nation on earth.
Studies have shown a connection with rape both stranger rape and acquaintance rape. When normal college mates are shown pornography, 50-65% of them then say they would be willing to rape a women if they thought they wouldn't get caught. Males who have committed acquaintance rape are more likely to be frequent readers of sex magazines like Playboy and Hustler. The more sex magazines sold within a state the higher the rape rate.
Studies have found significant changes in beliefs when subjects have been shown pornography. They come to believe that unusual sex behavior even psychiatrically disordered behavior is more common than they thought it was before. This includes behaviors such as having sex with animals and mixing sex with violence. They come to find damaging behavior as more acceptable such as showing pornography to children. They become less negative in their attitudes toward rape and believe that rapists should receive lighter sentences. They have a 50% reduction in their belief that women should be liberated.
