Independent feminist Camille Paglia, a lesbian atheist, discusses the voluptious appeal of unsafe sex. "The barebacking trend is a cold douche only to those who promote the sentimental PC view of gays as saintly humanitarians or angels of America. I saw the early signs of gay boredom with "safe sex" even before 1992, when I had a very unpleasant exchange over the matter with a prominent British gay activist (a Foucault idolator, naturally) on the stage of the Institute of Contemporary Art in London. Sexual desire, I have argued in my work, is intensified rather than quelled by boundaries and taboos. Transgression is hot."

Bianca Trump appeared on the Jenny Jones show. Arch Stanton comments on RAME: "Just saw the last ten minutes of Springer and a good portion of Jenny Jones. Now I remember why they call it trash tv. If someone from another country turned on these two shows and thought them to be a microcosm of America that person would immediately book the next plane home. Holy s---. Maybe they do represent America. Uh oh. The show was based on women who are too beautiful to get dates. An oxymoron to be sure. There were two women who I recognized as porn stars. Bianca of course and a tall black woman. (Spontaneous maybe?) They called themselves dancers/models. There was no mention of doing any porn. Bianca was up first and got gonged time and time again. She looks like she's put a little weight on and the audience let her know it. References of fat thighs, a joke about being lactose intolerant, bad attitude etc. were all hurled at her. She just gave it back and displayed an I'm-all-that-and-I-dont-need-you-you're-just-jealous attitude. She says she has not had a date in six months. This must have been taped before Diablo got lucky in Vegas. Or maybe that doesn't count as a date. Oh yeah. She also thinks she's black. She talks like she's black and uses the hand language that rappers use. She also said she has a college degree, has learned html and runs her own website."

RNS828: "A real show to stimulate the brain. Why do so many people really care what these porn girls/guys have to say and when the appear? Is ever anything interesting?"

Bambam4392@aol.com (Bambam4392) writes on RAME: "I don't know if those girls were getting off or in pain, but they certainly won't forget the scene they did with Rocco in this movie. "Rocco Ravishes Prague" is Rocco's best yet, the man's LOCO."

Jackass: "This was playing at my local porn shop's arcade. I wanted to see this Rocco I have heard so much about, so I went in to the arcade for the first time. Those damn arcade machines are totally f---ed. You had four channels (abcd) and it kept switching back and forth. It took me about an hour (not really) to figure out how to find Rocco's movie and by the time I got to it I was almost out of money. Then the scene I saw was Rocco and the girls talking outside. No f---ing or nothing. I ended up not even getting to jerk off before I ran out of money. Next time I'll take more money."

His Holiness Pope John "Adultery in your heart is committed not only when you look with concupiscence at a woman who is not your wife, but also if you look in the same manner at your wife" Paul II@mydejanews.com writes on RAME: "Ron [Jeremy]   made an appearance over the Valentine's Day weekend at one of our local (Tampa Bay area) clubs, Ybor Strip, along with Nico Treasures. During one of the lulls, I decided to take Jim Gunn's suggestion (that we attempt to determine the nature of McKenna's disability) and took a moment to ask Ron about the recent McKenna/YA 12 controversy sparked by Pat Riley's "The New Low" post.

"As I briefly sketched out the nature of the questions and disputes raised
during the 44 posts on the subject, Ron became increasingly amazed and upset. Then he let me know exactly how he saw it.

[Pat Riley: "And just what did you expect him to say? Regardless of the truth of the matter, he's not going to admit to any sort of exploitation and
certainly not to anyone he just met in a club."]

"First, McKenna was definitely not retarded or mentally compromised in any
way. Nor was she naive, nor did she fail to understand what she was getting
into. According to Ron, she's a swinger, and she was "totally into" the
scene. She wasn't in pain (or at least not in any more that one might expect,
given the situation), and her moans were not prompted by any sort of
distress. Ron denied any trouble with communication, and added that he didn't think she was completely deaf--that she might be playing it up to some
degree.

"Some caveats--Ron hasn't actually seen the scene (for that matter, neither
have I, though not for lack of trying). It took him some time to remember
anything about it, and I had to remind him of the title, producer, and the
performer in question. When it did come back to him, though, I was satisfied
that he wasn't making things up out of whole cloth.

"There was one thing Ron was certain on, though, and that was that he never, never worked with actresses that were not in complete command of the faculties. He was particularly disgusted, visibly so, at the accusations that
he'd done a retarded girl. He was even somewhat worried that such charges
were being circulated--"They could call the police!" were his words, more or less (I didn't have a tape recorder, and it would have been useless in the
club anyway...) He told me about the time he's done some grandmother well on her way to the century mark for Springer or Stern...He'd insisted that he
wouldn't go anywhere near the scene unless he was certain that she wasn't
senile or otherwise addled out of her mind...(Though he didn't go into how he received such assurances.)

"That was pretty much the end of the questioning. I gave him instructions on
how to find RAME, but how much can you tell a person in strip club with all
that blaring music? (And how much can we expect him to remember, what with Nico Treasures doing nude polaroids right next to us and dancers everywhere else doing their dollar-lap-dance special...) So I don't expect him to join us here anytime soon.

"Well , I doubt that this will have much impression on Mr. Riley, who has
previously posted (in response to Jim Gunn's suggestion that we actually try
to interview someone rather than speculate) that he no longer cares what the
facts of that matter were or are, and that he was only interested in the
ethical theory of the supposed situation (which turns out not to have existed
in the first place, probably). Thank god the moderators finally killed the
weird philosophizing about deafness and retardation...For that matter, I have
to snicker at his various denunciations of scenes he finds somehow
distasteful. Reminds me of the way Hunter S. Thompson will slip in a "I was
disgusted!" or "That's appalling!" after a leering passage full of lech and
lust. Does Patrick just put us on, or does he not know his own mind?

"By the way--can anyone tell me where exactly I can find a copy of Young & Anal 12 for sale? I've looked everywhere I can think of--Excalibur, the JM website--and no luck. I'd be grateful if anyone can tell me who to call. The scene with McKenna still sounds great (even if she's not retarded), and the one with Mikayla Shore sounds even better...Oh, and my thanks to Pat Riley for kindly bringing this to my attention..."

Before I sign off, let me add that Nico Treasures does an awesome set--I only stayed for the first one (the cigarette smoke was getting to me), and she
says later dances are even better. She's real big into audience participation; her lollipop game is a classic. And she poses for a mean polaroid too, the only chance I ever get to grope my favorite actresses. If she stops by your town, go see her!

Pat Riley responds on RAME: "You're right about not making much impression. Gunn's suggestion and your effort here are the usual disingenuous claptrap that comes from those who want to believe the best. An interview, even with the girl, is unlikely to shed any light because those doing the interview (yourself in this case) have an emotional interest in proving a particular side of the issue. Nor are any of the people likely to do
an interview (including yourself and myself) sufficiently expert in
the subject matter to produce a conclusion one way or another.

Take an easier example: [Vivid porn star] Laurie Michaels tits. Are they enhanced or natural? She says natural. I say they look "enhanced". Should I take her word for it. Not bloody likely. She has a vested interest in showing she's that size naturally and given the general lack of truth in the industry and on these matters one cannot rely on her word alone. How about if Steven Hirsch (Vivid CEO) says they're natural? Another vested interest. No sale! How about fan X who says "I've touched them and they're natural". Same deal except the vested interest is an emotional one. The only real way to tell is a mammogram by a known and trusted medical institution but of course this costs real money and is unlikely to be engaged in by someone just to prove a minor point even if they're not lying.

Same with McKenna. Get a quality psychologist (there are lots of charlatans in the business) to run a battery of tests on the girl and come up with a statement (if he could do such) that her ability to give consent was equivalent to a that for a non-handicapped (regardless of what sort of handicaps) female of the same age. You'll notice in David Austin's response where he actually took the time to discuss this with a professional that the person's response centered around "cognitive impairment" even disregarding the question of actual mental disability. Of course this is not going to be done because of the costs involved and perhaps because there are truths that the
industry, yourself, and Ron would rather be left unfound.

I don't like to see defective people in general and certainly not in porno movies.

Pornographer Jim Gunn replies: "Listen Patrick, you smug bastard, my suggestion was perfectly simple and valid- why not ask someone who knows the girl if she was retarded? Chances are, you'd find out easily if she was in any way mentally defective, if you knew who, how and where to ask. Maybe the guys effort to find the answer through a primary source (Ron Jeremy) was somewhat flawed, but geez, Ron was there for crying out loud. Anyway, if you insist on direct evidence, maybe someone in L.A. can ask the girl your questions directly. Maybe someone else in L.A. can ask the girl to post to r.a.m.e.? Sounds better to me than speculating from behind a
keyboard.

"By the way, I just wanted to add that your insulting insinuations a very
tiring. Contrary to your beliefs, there are people in this business who
are both smarter and have more integrity than you could ever hope to
have in your miserable existence."

During sweeps weeks, TV runs numerous stories on the porn industry. Entertainment Tonight is no exception. On Monday night, they rehashed the 1994 death of Savannah, drawing this negative reaction from a couple of members of the newsgroup rec.arts.movies.erotica (RAME):

Big James: "...They once again re-live the sad and pitiful last days of Savannah....They have Jeanna Fine on there crying and her mom. The piece had no point to it whatsoever. It seems that everytime ratings begin to slip over at ET, they do a story with some sort of porn angle. They have done several stories over the past couple of weeks that really had no point, other than the fact that they involved porn. I just think that taking a very sad event, Savannah's suicide, and using it as a gimmick to boost ratings is pretty f---ing low. I respect the feelings expressed by those in the piece, I am sure that Jeanna Fine's tears were genuine. I place the blame at the door of ET and Hard Copy and all the rest of those type of shows that put down porn and the people that make it. Until of course they need a little ratings boost."

David Turner: "I was feeling pretty good about what ET had been doing after the story on Stacy Valentine, which actually wasn't demeaning to her or the business as much as most "mainstream media" stories tend to be....but I was worried after hearing that they were going to rehash the Savannah story during sweeps month. Unfortunately....the fears were warranted, and ET has sunk again to using porn-related material in whatever fashion appropiate to their ratings needs."

Bushmiller writes on RAME: "My magic eight-ball(tm) tells me that Tom Byron is in line for one of his patented "character changes" in the coming year. A new gimmick, if you will.

"The dust is far from settling at Extreme but regardless of which new puppetmaster will take control of Tom's strings, he will, before the millenium, ix-nay the Arlo Guthrie, the Green Day, etc...and re-emerge as a more conservative-clad and more business-like porn auteur. For lack of a more detailed description as to his new character, he will start taking his cues, albeit subconsciously, from John Leslie. Not sure if he'll start purchasing over-priced art, trade his Foghat records for Miles Davis--and it remains to be seen whether he can, indeed, shed his Southwest white trash roots-- but he will soon be called up to attempt main event status and leave the in-your-face mid-card gimmick match-mentality behind. To do that, he'll have to stop acting like he's "on something" (as my grams used to describe me as I schlepped in from the Friday night high school football game) and grow up in the eyes of the porn power-brokers."

VCA director Wesley Emerson's John Holmes documentary WADD appears in three film festivals - South by Southwest in Texas, the Big Muddy in Champagne, Illinois (3/5) and Mediawave 99 in Dyor, Hungary.

Schnip34 gives this list of porn star escorts on RAME: "Devon Shire 213-473-9607@ look at www.nicisgirls.com. Call Caressa Savage @ either 310-659-3442 or 818-986-4316, she has a portfolio of girls who escort. Leanna Foxx 818-973-2248. Alicia Rio does too, so does Marilyn Star."

From Center Stage Productions in North Carolina: "Bryan Lambert [owner] announces that a Production/Distribution agreement was signed between Center Stage Productions (CSP) and R.L.Allan owner of B' Exquisite Productions, a Texas Based Amateur Production Company and Mike South Owner of South River Video, a well known Georgia Based Amateur Production Company. Lambert says "it's the logical step in the evolution of CSP, signing the best amateur producers in the nation to expand the reach of CSP and to bring more first timers into the Industry than any other company."

CSP is currently producing the AVN Award Nominated Series All Those Naughty Neighbors, Carolina Girls, Young, Hot and Horny Amateurs and the first all amateur feature, Southern Blow Job Belles. B' Exquisite is currently in post production with its new series "Texas Tarts" and expects to introduce 40 new faces and two new series into the industry this year alone. B' Exquisite's parent company, A & A Agency, which is a talent agency that focuses on the feature dance circuit will provide a much needed door way into both industries. Mike South will revive Mike South's Southern Belles as Mike South's Southern Belles 2000 and expects to introduce another 40 new faces in the industry. Lambert says that CSP and Associates will release more Never Before Seen Faces onto the market than any other company in 1999. "We consider a first timer to be just that "Never Before Seen On Video" unlike some companies out there, where first timers mean the first time their company has shot them." Lambert says that Allen and South will have full creative control over their product.

Luke's favorite book on the history of X is 1993's "Bottom Feeders: From Free Love to Hard Core - the Rise and Fall of Counterculture Heroes Jim and Artie Mitchell" by John Hubner.

Marilyn Chambers told Luke in January that Bottom Feeders was accurate. "Please send my regards [to Marilyn Chambers]," the Hubner, a San Jose Mercury News journalist, writes to Luke. "I have good memories of her--her forthright honesty."

Fred Buccolini conducted the following email exchange with Hubner:

1) How long did it take to do the initial interviews?

Hubner: "About a year."

2) Once you sat down with all of your notes--did you use 3 by 5 cards to organize your chapters. Was there something that you found, that pulled things in focus for you?

Hubner: "I used 4X6 cards; at the top, I write the subject and the speaker. The themes kind of emerged from that."

3) How long did it take to write Bottom Feeders after the research stage.

Hubner: "About 6-8 months"

4) When preparing for an interview, would you write out a list of questions you wanted to cover? When asking questions, if the subject refused to answer, did you acknowledge it your book, or avoid it. For example, I
would have liked to have known, whether Marilyn Chambers received all of the profits she was due from Behind the Green Door. Did you ask her for some paperwork?

Hubner: "Well, there's no paperwork in porn; strictly cash, no paper trail. I can't remember having a set rule on writing about questions not answered; the reader doesn't care, unless it reveals character."

5) I have a personal problem with putting a dead person's words in quotes. I gather this liberty comes from new journalism, but legally, I question the practice. How do you cover yourself when doing this? Especially if there were only two people at the scene and one of them is dead?

Hubner: "A good question, something I've struggled with. True crime is a hybrid genre, part journalism, part fiction. I lean toward journalism. My rule was, I needed two people to verify what was said in a conversation. After I wrote it, I'd often call and read them back what I'd written, to see if it was accurate, and, many times, to jog memories."

6) Were you pleased with the sales of Bottom Feeders? Could you give me the number of Hardcover sold? Mass Market Paper. I am not being nosy--just realistic.

Hubner: "The book didn't sell; people who use porn don't want to think about it, people who don't use it don't want to think about it. And, I found, to condemn it is not to think, oftentimes. My friends were disappointed I'd
written the book; few of them read it."

7) What was the reaction from the people that you wrote about?

Hubner: "Very positive. Surprisingly. And yet, when you get close to what is true, that is often the case, even when it's ugly."

8) Since Jim Mitchell has been released, did he give you his views?

Hubner: "I haven't heard from Jim. Don't think I ever will."

9) Did you have to deal with a personality type that could be cordial, then turn hostile--like a Jeckle and Hyde personality? Is there a way to control an interview when dealing with this type of personality?

Hubner: "Just be a bit detached, professional. Avoid them if you can. Life is short, crazies are many."
