Annie Sprinkle returns to the Gotham stage--playing to packed houses at the East Village performance space PS 122.
“Herstory of Porn: Reel to Real” is an all-new show juxtaposing Annie’s solo performance with a panoramic film-and-video-diary installation that maps her 25-year journey through “the Sexual Revolution."
Directed by Emilio Cubeiro--best remembered for his role as the phone freak in Richard Kern’s quasi-porn classic “Fingered”--and featuring video montages by Scarlot Harlot, “Her Story: Reel to Real” visually and verbally unspools Annie Sprinkle’s evolution from porn star to pleasure activist.
Absent are the mammographic “boob shampoos” and gynecological “public-cervix announcements” that typified Annie’s past forays onto the Gotham stage. Annie ‘98 is a more contemplative apparition.
On opening night, lesbian audience members canoodled in the darkened theatre while Annie “interacted” with clips from the 200-plus hardcore films that have showcased her anatomy down through the decades.
Also in the audience was Larry “The King of Swing” Levenson. Reports Larry, speaking via cell phone from his favorite Manhattan diner: “Annie did these voice-overs that had the audience in stitches. It was kind of like “Mystery Science Theatre”, y’know, with Annie explaining how to give a blowjob while a scene from Gerard Damiano’s “Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle” played. Annie lived with Damiano for a while, you know.
” She also talked about her friend and mine--the late, great porn legend Mark “Mr. Ten-and-a-Half” Stevens.”

Larry Levenson and Annie Sprinkle’s friendship dates back to the dawn of porno modernism.

Saturday's New York Times says the mob is muscling into the sex business. On 10/9/98, federal agents arrested six men from the Gambino crime family after surveillance showed that the men intended to harm operators of adult entertainment businesses that front for prostitution.
The thugs were pressing a computer expert to systematically divert telephone calls from one or more adult entertainment enterprises to competing companies affiliated with the mob.
Among the six arrested, were two mob enforcers (Vincent Congiusti and Anton Nelsen) flown in from Tampa, Florida.

Since the mid-1990s operators of adult entertainment companies known as out-call services have attributed a mysterious decline in the number of calls from customers to computer criminals who gain access to the local phone company's switches and illegally reroute calls to competitors.
"This is a super big business here," Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Johnson said of sex services. "These operators generate a lot of money and a lot of cash."
The indictment charges that a significant portion of the Las Vegas out-call industry is a front for money laundering, robbery, narcotics distribution and other criminal activities, in addition to prostitution.
Federal agents believe that La Cosa Nostra crime syndicate is trying to grab control of the sex industry through threats, extortion and other illegal means, including sophisticated rerouting of calls from competitors' businesses.

QUESTION:
How does the adult film industry feel about what you're doing?
ANSWER:
They take the position that prostitution and porno are not the same. They think that what they do is better. To me, it's exactly the same.
It's a matter of enjoying sex and getting paid for it. Either direction you go, whether it's legal prostitution or legal adult filmmaking, they're one and the same. How can they say they're different? I've gotten a lot of calls from my fans who've seen me dance at Babydolls, a topless club in Dallas...my homeclub. But the fans say, "Oh my God! I can't believe you're doing this. This is like a dream come true."
