Luke found this story 12/24/98 and immediately phoned Russ at home. Russ completely denied it but asked me to keep off my site. I said would hold running it. I needed to investigate it more.

When I relayed this story toWalter Gernert at the January 1999 CES he appeared genuinely shocked and said had not heard of it. At that time we were having an intense heart-to-heart conversation in Russ Hampshire's office inside the VCA booth. Russ stood outside the office looking through the window to make sure nothing bad happened to me.

Is Porno A $10 Billion A Year Industry?

In November, 2000, the New York Times published: "Spurred by changes in technology that make pornography easier to order into the home than pizza, and court decisions that offer broad legal protection, the business of selling sexual desire through images has become a $10 billion annual industry in the United States, according to Forrester Research of Cambridge, Mass., and the industry's own Securities and Exchange Commission filings."

I distrust these figures. I talked a month ago to a mainstream journalist (David Whelan of Inside.com) seeking confirmation of them. I told him to be very distrustful of the stats compiled by AVN and FCI (Flying Crocodile). He examined their stats, talked to their reps, and decided he did not trust their stats.

I felt proud that he did not buy the industry BS.

David says: There was a Jupiter Research report in 1998 which estimated the annual intake of the industry at $10 billion but the guy (Mark Hardy) who made up the report is no longer there and Jupiter does not stand behind the report. Hardy now runs an internet music startup.

You ask Jupiter about their methodology and they don't have a straight convincing answer.

Porn Actress Stoned To Death In Iran

TEHRAN, May 21 (AFP) - An Iranian woman convicted of acting in pornographic films has been stoned to death in the prison where she has been held for the last eight years, a newspaper reported Monday.

The unnamed 35-year-old was buried in a pit and pelted with stones until she died in the centre of Tehran's Evin prison, the Entekhab paper said, adding that she had been tracked down after an intensive police search. It said investigators only succeeded in finding her after they noticed the serial number of an electricity meter that was in the background of a scene in one of her films.

Jupiter does not stand behind that much touted 1998 report of the porn biz at $10 billion. The guy who made it is no longer with the company.

Yet even the New York Times keeps trotting out these tired numbers as though they have any validity. David Whelan, Assistant Editor at the now defunct Inside Magazine, decided to do a serious investigation of these much touted numbers. Whelan, unlike Rich, did not simply plant a wet sloppy kiss on the buttocks of the porn industry and accept what its leaders had to say as gospel truth. Instead, Whelan investigated, and found like anyone who investigates these numbers, that they are made of sand. They are not substantiable. They are essentially made up.

Paul Fishbein writes in to the New York Times online discussion: Paul Fishbein from AVN. Two points I would like to make. When Frank asked me whether I watched adult videos and he said that I "flinched," I don't want people to think that I dislike adult films in any way. There have been plenty that I have admired and enjoyed. But when you've been reviewing one kind of product for nearly 20 years, it's hard to remove yourself from the businss point of view. Come awards time, I try to watch everything being considered and fast-forwarding is amust.

Second, I disagree with our own Bryn Pryor whose cynical view of the industry is not, to the best of my knowledge, shared by anyone else on our editorial staff. A blanket statement like "porn is not a creative medium" is unfair. While most of the product being produced would fall into that category, there are some very talented, creative people making interesting product (Michael Ninn, Nic Andrews, Ren Savant and others). Nonetheless, I believe Bryn does like porn. I think you have to like anything that you can satirize as well as he does with "Money Shot."

They took the page from my site without my permission or even a request. They removed my site logo from the top and the copyright from the bottom of my page and posted the work as their own on their website at http://www.darkstarvideo.com/april/links.html.

But if you look at the page source by typing view-source:http://www.darkstarvideo.com/april/links.html into your browser you will see that my copyright is still listed in the source code.

I was aware that some adult web site producers lack basic eithcs but this one struck me as very bold. These guys not only stole my work and are publishing it as their own but thay didn't even take the time to remove my copyright from the source code. They also left many links which have custom code so I will get credit for sending users to other sites. Both the copyright and other link code prove that it page was mine and it was stolen. Also this uneithical web publisher made no attempt to reformat the page. They kept the exact font and page layout. Both the page structure and the style in which the source code was written is protected by my copyright.

I am sending this to you to share with the adult community at large as a way to expose these theives. I am sure that based on their past and present actions that if I confronted them before I exposed them that they would be cruel and would make no effort to comply by removing the stolen work. Once you publish this report and others see that these theives have really stolen my work, I can then take legal action if necessary. Also this issue is very current. I checked the page info on http://www.darkstarvideo.com/april/links.html and it shows that these guys posted this stolen page to their site on Thu, May 17, 2001 2:29:40 PM Local time. This was only days ago.

It clearly states that Any person who violates section 1201 or 1202 willfully and for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain (1) shall be fined not more than $500,000 or imprisoned for not more than 5 years, or both, for the first offense; and (2) shall be fined not more than $1,000,000 or imprisoned for not more than 10 years, or both, for any subsequent offense.

I work very hard for what little money I make. It really sucks to have people steal your work and attempt to profit from it.

The Role Of The Camera In Porn

Dudley Moore writes: Luke, I believe the camera offers a fascinating entry-point for the study of porn, and I'd like to share a few insights I gleened from my study of Charles Socarides' reparative therapy and his unitary theory of the sexual perversions in his book, The Pre-oedipal Origin of the Sexual Perversions:

1. The camera/stage/street usurps the role of fathers, replacing the safe distance and healthy control a father would normally provide to his separating/individuating children, with a pathological distancing and total control of the sexual object, as in voyeurism/exhibitionism and sadism/masochism. The fathers of sexual perverts, including homosexuals, are exquisitely passive, distant and emotionally uninvolved with their children. The camera simultaneously allows both pathological idealization and perverse denigration of the object, just as the father either intrusively idealized or rejected his son or daughter as an object only, rather than as an individual.

2. The camera/stage/street re-produces an engulfing, sexually intrusive mother, from whom the infant could never escape: the camera can never get too close or intrusive in porn. Paradoxically, note how paranoia is strikingly ABSENT in women who appear in porn or publicly nude on stage or as streetwalkers. Maternal engulfment, intrusiveness or rejection has been incorporated in these women as "normal" states, in order to form some compromise sense of their own separate femininity and self-identity. Their problematic feminine identification is sometimes accompanied by narcissitic inflation or deflation as well, as in being a "celebrity" on camera, which serves to replace parental approval, and validates the woman as a separate individual with proven self-worth, if only when on camera or in the spotlight.

Frank writes: Also, I wish there was a way to give beleaguered Charles Socarides a boost with his reparative therapy stance. This guy really is a modern-day Copernicus. Nobody wants to hear there is a cure for homosexuality... After all, it just became socially acceptable, for Christ's sake. 3. The camera/stage/street is also the all-providing mother who brings every unspoken desire directly to the male sex consumer. The male consumer's experiences no longer need to be earned as a result of responsible, fully adult behavior nor as a social reward. The camera, and its female sex objects, ideally supply all his needs, just as mothers supplied all the male infant's needs. The simultaneous idealization and denigration of these women as objects is thus experienced by male consumers as both narcissistically fulfilling and justified.
