What's Going On With Porn.com?

Jason writes on Netpond: Does anyone know what's going on with the domain name PORN.COM? The domain has moved registrars like four times in the last month and is now at dotster.com with some guy living in Israel now listed. It seems a bit fishy, does anyone know what's going on?

Hooper coordinated with IGallery to take out webmastersorg.com. Hooper was a pawn in IGallery's plan. Now Netpond.com is having many problems. Are they just technical or also legal?

It seems that people from the GIA are threatening Netpond, telling them to tame their ways and stop allowing anonymous posts. Lee Noga has hinted that Netpond is a doomed animal. I think the GIA wants Netpond out of the picture. I think GIA is moving in on the irresponsible webmaster forums to get them to clean up their act. After Netpond goes down, YNOT could be next. And YNOT is a weak animal.

Porn's Compassionate Conservatism

It's hard to remember at times, but there was a brief, shining period when the concept of what was being filmed actually mattered. Stepping out of society's closet in the early seventies, American porno was a bastard art form that offered directors real freedom from conventional standards and restrictions. How do you suppose Cromer wound up published in the Nation? Do you think an editor there asked him to write something? Or do you suppose he simply submitted it?

Are there "agents" who specialize in getting stuff like that published? If you started placing essays in magazines like the Nation or Salon, you could wind up being on the legitimate journalist circuit, and could start branching out pontificating on other subjects that you're interested in. Greg Lasrado Settles With The FTC

From FTC.gov:

Australian defendant, Gregory Lasrado, has agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that a scheme that hijacked unwitting Internet surfers violated the FTC Act. Lasrado participated in a scam that copied existing Web sites and inserted coded instructions in the copycat sites which automatically redirected consumers to adult sites operated by the defendants. Then the scammers disabled the browser's "back" and "exit" commands so that Internet surfers trying to escape the pornographic images faced screen after screen of similar material and advertisements for other adult sites. The FTC obtained a permanent injunction from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and a court order to permanently purge this scam from the Internet in default judgments against two defendants, WTFRC Pty Ltd. and Guiseppe Nirta. A third defendant, Carlos Pereira, has evaded law enforcement authorities in Portugal. The Stipulated Final Judgment and Order announced today will bar the illegal practices and resolve the case against Lasrado.

"This case illustrates the importance of cross-border cooperation between consumer protection agencies, especially as we patrol the 'Net," said Jodie Bernstein, Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. "The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission and the Portuguese Instituto do Consumidor rendered invaluable assistance in the investigation and resolution of the case. Working together, we've kicked this scam off the net and let the scammers know they can't snub the law."

In September 1999, the FTC filed a complaint in U. S. District Court seeking to halt the scheme. According to the FTC complaint, in a practice called "pagejacking," the defendants made exact copies of Web pages posted by unrelated parties, including the imbedded text that informs search engines about the subject matter of the site. Then they made one change that was hidden from view: they inserted a command to "redirect" any surfer coming to the site to another Web site that contained sexually-explicit, adult-oriented material. Internet surfers searching for subjects as innocuous as "Oklahoma tornadoes" or "child car seats" would type those terms into a search engine and the search results would list a variety of related sites, including the bogus, copycat site of the defendants. Surfers assumed from the listings that the defendants' sites contained the information they were seeking and clicked on the listing. The "redirect" command imbedded in the copycat site immediately rerouted the consumer to an adult site hosted by the defendants. Once there, consumers were victimized by another scam. The defendants "mouse trapped" consumers by incapacitating their Internet browser's "back" and "close" buttons, so that while they were trying to exit the defendants' site, they were sent to additional adult sites in an unavoidable, seemingly endless loop.

The settlement announced today bars Lasrado from posing as another Web site; from inserting any type of code that redirects consumers to any Web page or Web site he owns, operates or is affiliated with; and from misrepresenting the contents of his Web pages through the use of meta tags or other means. The settlement also will bar him from "mousetrapping," and from providing false contact information in connection with domain name registration. The settlement also will bar Lasrado from failing to clearly and conspicuously disclose material terms and conditions in connection with the advertising, promotion, offering for sale, sale or provision of any goods or services on the Internet. He would be required to disclose the name or names of his business, the geographic address and e-mail or telephone contact numbers. The settlement contains certain record keeping provisions to allow the Commission to monitor compliance.

Luke replies: Yes, it seems to end Greg's deal with the FTC. And Greg Lasrado has not been found legally guilty in a court of law. You say it clears Greg's name. I respectfully disagree. Not being found guilty in a court does not clear one's name. It simply means that you are not legally guilty. But an impartial observer reading the FTC decision would conclude that Greg is morally guilty of benefitting from page jacking. Greg made a ton of money off an illegal and immoral activity. If the situation was reversed and I was in Greg's place, I'd be deeply ashamed.

What's Going On At Cybererotica?

Various sources over the past few days told me that Cybererotica.com was headed for a bumpy ride. Monday morning, Cybererotica's owner Ron Levi told me that everything is fine at the company.

I've heard that Ron Levi, the owner of Cybererotica (CE) aka Voice Media, recently paid over one million dollars in credit card fines. I hear that some major players flew out to Los Angeles today to meet with Levi and company.

Ron Levi called me Monday at 10:15AM:

Ron: "Luke, it is amazing that you could not wait until talking to me. I do not check my email every day. We did not lose our merchant account. All webmasters payouts will go out as scheduled. Goodbye."

Levi hung up. He sounded angry with me.

I hear that there will be big meetings at Voice Media today, Tuesday and Wednesday before a dramatic announcement Thursday.

I've heard speculation that Levi may part ways with his business partner Paul Lesser, the former Hustler advertising manager.

I hear there's a battle on between Voice Media's principle players.

Ron Levi told two webmasters Monday morning that it is "BS" that Cybererotica is closing shop.

Until now, Ron Levi has avoided the problems that befell RJBTelcom and CEN, the two other biggest adult operations on the web. IGallery's parent company New Frontier (NOOF on Nasdaq) sustained a $25 million legal judgment last year. And Vivid Video is backing off its plans from the Spring of 2000 to go public.

Ron's peers have been full of talk that Levi's operation will eventually encounter the same obstacles that hit his competitors over the past few months. But so far, CE has not been sued by anybody significant, not the Federal Trade Commission nor AOL.

Margold was right back in the early 90s when he said this biz was dying. It is dying because it has become too much of a mainstream part of pop culture and therefore a sensational victim of it. Back in the 70s when it was taboo, illegal, underground, but chic, both average and beautiful people had not yet discovered the industry. And so it flourished.

The years between the late 60s and the late 70s, the Golden Age, were populated with jobless legit actors and actresses with real talent who were unable to get any other work. By the time the advent of video came along in the early 80s, the costs of production plummeted and the floodgates opened for the man on the street, the boy and girl next door or hunk and hunkette models with no other gifts or talent other than their looks.

All of a sudden Hollywood acceptance made the biz pedestrian and commonplace and porn turned into a skin fashion show and nude beauty pageant, losing its soul as a result. When the biz became filled with nothing but rank amateurs or Hollywood hardbodies with no variation in between, there was no more room for plots and stories because nobody could act.

Once upon a time, when films had plots to entertain, character actors and actresses who were not Mr. and Mrs. America made them believeable. So as a result, the movies were better. Today all people care about is how someone looks even though it is people with the rare ability to perform sex and act a part or role who make the sex much hotter.

Today, porn is a flesh fashion show. If you are not a pretty boy or girl, then you do not exist as a performer. Unattractive people do not have sex. It's ironic that the ugly old time martyrs who sacrificed to start this biz would be rank amateurs by today's visual standards. But historians universally agree that porn was hotter back when real people who could act were the stars and it was sleazy.

I'm in my mid 30s, young enough for a career 2nd wind but too old to care. I traded in the ego of sinful celebrity for the promise of a family life I never had. Carnal temptations are hard to resist, but all the newcomer prospects I run into are conservative, prudish WASPs of the new quasi-acceptance who wish to sanitize porn for their own kind. And I'll have nothing of it. I'll neither eat nor sell sugar free candy.

That is what porn has cum to. The packaging is better than ever, but the sweetness has either been replaced by a graphic soulless taste or been removed for the porno diabetics among us altogether. So all that's left is gossip, in-fighting and pettiness. Can't we all get along? If anybody out there wants to make movies with human characters again instead of Ken & Barbie robots, I wanna hear from them.

Otherwise nothing short of a time machine will save this biz from the evils of mainstream popularity and acceptance. Enter right wing bully Ashcroft to the rescue? Not. The titles, sales and marketing destinations will change, but the content will remain the same.

So everybody keep arguing and fighting over the new millennium spoils of a biz that enjoyed its heyday long before the Internet and you were born. In the meantime, those like me who know the way we were and how far we've fallen will fall asleep to the wet dreams of yesteryear. Call me nostalgic or call me a hasbeen. Just don't call me a realist. For if I am, then the best has cum and gone and we all ought to pack it in.

The Triads Gang Role In Pornography
