Britain Relaxes Porn Censorship
David writes: In case you haven't heard, the British Board of Film Censors have now issued new guidelines and will allow depiction of consensual sexual activity in films and videos which are sold in licensed shops or via mail order to adults (i e over 18).
Their press release states that this will include genital contact,including oral, and penetration, both male and female. Any depiction of forced sex and obviously minors is still not allowed. The Government (namely the Home Office) have indicated that this is now acceptable and effectively brings the UK into line with everywhere else in Europe. They have stated that they intend to bring in legislation making it an offence to supply such material to minors (and indeed covering other areas, for example where minors view this material because their parents have negligently left it lying around the house).
This follows a general relaxation of police activity in the areas of pornography and a recent case where a film maker took the BBFC to court after they declined to give some of his films certificates (R18). The court found in his favour and the BBFC have now issued these new guidelines.

You (or some of the moderators) seem to be extremely interested in "industry insiders" posting to the group and seem to think that we scare them off. What would you have it turn into? Gene Ross's website in NG format? That's what most of the industry insiders would like to do with it. They're not going to contribute anything other than publicity for themselves just as Randy West does.
I can only think of one other NG (a computer language) where the industry insiders actually appear with regularity and contribute something and that because the subject matter is non-controversial. Even mindspring/earthlink/netcom...and the rest help groups don't have techies posting to them because as soon as they appear they're reamed out by the regulars in a feeding frenzy. It's really democracy in action and as it should be. At the moment I'd love to have the chairman of Toshiba in a public forum so I could tell him about the design errors in his latest product. He'd squirm. He's wise enough not to appear.
The only "insiders" we get are people who have a thick skin and are willing to scuffle with the masses. Cheers to them. But unless you're going to turn it into publicity venue the others aren't going to come...ever. And if you do make it a publicity place, you'll lose the regulars.

A better analogy would be a board of trustees of a library or a museum, a group that often shares similar characteristics such as control over content, self-perpetuation, and sometimes arrogance. However most see their role as being responsive to their customers/visitors and to the pool from which those customers are drawn. Is it your feeling that lots of people want to see someone banned? There is a probataionary cooling off period. Bottom line is the group is growing which is a good thing; but the number of assholes is growing too -- assholes who like to respond to every rejection with 100 line diatribes against us, ignoring whatever we may have said in previous responses to him. In these cases, it's hello killfile. A "regular" poster is going to really have to cross some serious lines to end up in the killfile. The killfile is supposed to act as a deterrent. I doubt it, the XXX Men thread is damned funy and damned creative. The Irish Porn laws thread, while not relevant to my life, is certainly a good indication of what we can do. Again, you underestimate good old fashioned moxie. It's a lot of work making a newsgroup work, but it can be done. You'd have to convince the moderator of news.groups to approve your Call For Votes. It took us 4 or 5 times before we got approved. Then a discussion period, and a voting period and hopefully you have enough votes to get the control message propagated. In the alt. hierarchy, nothing; these days, just make the group and hope the big news providers carry it.

Says who? If I recall that post, it was pretty funny; no reason for rejection. Janine's statement is crap. I posted something today that was critical of something Vince Voyeur said to Rog about acting in film v. video. Criticism is fine; we're all for it. We haven't stifled anything. The existence of this group proves that. You're talking about it, aren't you? The policy is a policy. We made, we enacted it. In fact, we've had the language in the charter since day 1; we're just finally deciding to enforce it a bit more strictly -- "intelligent and mature" -- been there since the call for votes. Nope; you should read up on how newsgroups are formed and stuff; it's pretty interesting. Basicially, anyone can start a newsgroup in the Big 8, they need to follow steps (some of which I outlined above) which ends with a vote of more than 100 people and there has to be a margin (I forget which 2/3 perhaps?) of yes votes to get the group created. If you are voted NO, you have to wait 6 months before you can try again. Moderators are moderators for life. The voted-on charter makes provisions for replacement of moderators and whatnot. We can have as many or as few moderators as we would like; we found a number that works well for us. So far, none of us have given up our seat; eventually it will happen and the departing party will either be replaced or not. From the posting guidelines: "A resigning moderator, whether or not she/he is a sole moderator, selects his/her successor. Moderators are requested to consider the opinions of readers of the group when choosing their successors. A resigning co- moderator may, with the unanimous consent of the other moderators, choose not to appoint a successor."

We at the AIM HealthCare Foundation believe the statistics that STD’s compromise the immune system and can leave it open and available to the HIV virus. Remember, if there is any type of discharge it means you’re shedding white cells. HIV loves cells, it’s nice and warm and they can crawl in there and get nice and comfortable in your body. So know your body, get tested frequently, be as safe as you choose to be and above all, educate yourself.
CHLAMYDIA
You can get it from having sex (vaginal, anal or oral) with someone who has Chlamydia. It can be cured with the right medicine. What To Look For: Men may have a white or clear watery drip from the penis. Women may have more discharge (flow) from the vagina than usual. It may also burn or hurt to pee. You may have these signs one to three weeks after sex with someone who has Chlamydia. Later, women may also feel pain in the lower belly.
If Not Treated: Chlamydia is a serious disease. If you don’t get treated, it can spread in your body. Both men and women may not be able to have children. If you are pregnant, your baby can be born sick with Chlamydia.
How To Find Out If You Have It: Go to a clinic or doctor right away to get checked. If you have Chlamydia, you will be given medicine to take. Keep taking the medicine until it’s all gone, even if you feel better. It takes one week for the medicine to cure the disease. Tell your sex partner(s) that they may have Chlamydia and need to get checked. Don’t have sex until both you and your partner(s) are treated.
GONORRHEA
You can get them from having sex (vaginal, anal, or oral) with someone who has gonorrhea. It can be cured with the right medicine.
What To Look For: A white, yellow or green drip from your penis, vagina or anus. It may also burn or hurt to pee. You may have these signs two days to a few weeks after sex with someone who has gonorrhea. Women may also feel pain in the lower belly. Many people with gonorrhea don’t have any of these signs. During the last month, we have tested 189 people for chlamydia by urine LCR, 11 tested positive (8 females, 3 males). Don’t share a drink with someone else or accept a drink from a punch bowl or other common source. Designate a nondrinking friend to make sure you don’t appear unusually intoxicated or sick, and that you don’t leave with someone under suspicious circumstances. And if, upon waking up, you see signs that you may have been drugged and sexually assaulted, go to the hospital immediately. Within a 12-hour window, the hospital will be able to test urine for GHB, which could make prosecuting the case easier. Or – DON’T DRINK ON THE SET!
