JimL: Regarding the future of freedom of speech, either Gore or Bush will be trouble. Ridley99 is right on point about what can happen. The worst case is that Bush would win.

Bush has a fair shot at winning and has already made such statements as that Jesus is his role model and that he is a social conservative. More to the point for you and the porn world, he said "there's such a thing as too much freedom..." and he was talking about some guy's little web parody of George W. Bush's web page. Conservatives are already feeling like the pendulum is ready to swing their way again, and they are frothing at the mouth to come in and really destroy the people they see as enemies. They use codewords like "family values" (Gary Bauer explicitly SAID that the phrase family values is code for his agenda) but they mean: racism (including a clear anti-semitic streak!), suppression of women (particularly in blocking poor women's access to birth control), sexual shame, censorship, and all that goes with it. All the republicans were happy with the status quo of the confederate flag on the SC statehouse and I think that serves as an excellent indicator as to their true value system.

The current Republican extremist idea of a utopia is a christian version of the Taliban's regime in Afghanistan. Bauer more so than Bush of course, but all of them are cool with the idea of more government, LOTS more big government when it comes to private rights and social freedom.

Gore is more in line with Clinton with respect to social freedoms, but his wife is the wild card. A Gore presidency may go after porn just to find an easy scapegoat to show that his administration isn't too liberal, and to throw a bone to those who are anti-Clinton, or also at the urging of his wife. I don't think Gore is likely to do this, though, and in any case whatever Gore may do will be far better than what Bush would do.

However, either president is going to be worse for the porners.

Average americans uninterested in porn used to be nicely insulated from it - maybe the vacation hotel tv channels would have some pay per view softcore, and otherwise it would never come up in the family.

Now, the internet porn assault has made people much more aware of it. When you search for nearly anything on AltaVista, you'll get dozens of vile web pages designed to pop up new windows when you close or leave them (does this really help the stupid net- porner's sales to annoy everybody in this manner?!). So Stagliano and Black and Little and Butts would likely end up paying for the sins of the net porners here and abroad. The result of Tipper Gore's last show of motherly concern was hundreds of hours of congressional testimony followed by the record industry promising to label and self-censor. I doubt such an attack on porn would result in as agreeable of an outcome!

And to the human race. Porn is about creating a narrative voyeuristic experience. It is about performers creating fantasy for the point of arousal. Yes, at it's heart, it's meant to spill sperm. But it's supposed to be narrative filmmaking. This new porn makes my stomach turn. It is arousal tied to violence, abuse and masochism. No decent society should include this.

America needs to loosen up sexually. But it does not need Max Hardcore, and the rest of the no-plot gonzo waste. They are not making movies. They are not telling stories like the great porners of history, Jamie Gillis, Harry Reems, Annie Sprinkle, etc. Politically motivated people who sexually empowered themselves. No, the Gonzo trash are abusers, plain and simple. And if they don't stop the disgusting product they've created, society will. And more legit porn, made by professionals, aimed to arouse through the concept of mutual sexual satisfaction not degradation, will suffer as well.

From Slate.com: MacDonald's central thesis is that Judaism is best understood not as a religion but as a blueprint for an experiment in eugenics--a "group evolutionary strategy," he calls it--designed to maximize a single trait: intelligence. For thousands of years, he says, Jews have separated themselves from their neighbors, choosing to confine themselves to a closed society with strict rules against marrying outside the group. They have lived by policies of extreme group loyalty and obedience to rabbinical authority, which served to maintain their racial purity; and they practiced low-birth-rate, high-investment parenting, which is the royal road to a high group I.Q. They conferred social status (which brings along with it the most desirable women) on men according to their brilliance--indeed, says MacDonald, study of the Talmud was nothing more than a casuistic exercise meant to weed out the dim. Eventually, their highly developed genes for mental and verbal acuity, as well as their social aggression (also carefully bred-in), gave the Jews powerful tools that enable them to dominate neighboring ethnic groups in the endless war of all against all for food and resources.

In his second book, MacDonald explains why Jews have encountered so much anti-Semitism for so many years: It was justified. Gentiles reacted to Jews the way any group of animals on the veldt would when confronted with a group of superior animals likely to challenge them successfully for control of the available resources--they tried to destroy the Jews before the Jews destroyed them.
