Scalding Hot Fight Gossip

Jim DiGiorgio got into a fight with a bald guy, a salesman for Sin City, at the AVN awards...

A triumphant Rodger Jacobs, fresh from winning the Best Screenplay, Video, award from AVN, left this message on Luke's machine Sunday night: "So you didn't think you could jack off to Double Feature but it went on to win ten awards. I guess that's what happens sometimes when you try to make a movie that aims at something higher than the crotch, but it is lost on gossip mongers like you."

Eli Richardson from All Good Video ran like a cunt, says Rob Spallone about his meeting with the head of All Good Video on Friday. Paul Fishbein paged Rob about the incident. Rob says Eli was afraid for his life, and was afraid to reenter the CES. Eli owes Rob $1500, says Spallone who got about 20 messages from people asking him to leave Eli alone.

Spallone got into a fight with a drunk Tommy Sinnopoli at the Rio Friday night.

CES Update

CES closed uneventfully Sunday afternoon with crowds about at the level of opening day.

As crowds built Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoon, organizers held hundreds of people outside, which meant that there was far less crowding inside adult convention. And no fights, unlike last year.

AVN was on many porners' lips. It seems that the dominant shaper of opinion vis-a-vis AVN is awards, coverage and ratings. Those who like their AVN coverage, reviews and awards, speak well of AVN. Those who don't, don't. After more than four years on this beat, I've yet to uncover hard evidence of the often spoken "fixing" of AVN awards and ratings. Thus I understand these charges, like many charges freely thrown around on my site and around the industry, as primarily metaphors for anger stemming from hurt feelings. Porners feel particularly free to tell me that they hate AVN, assuming that because I bash AVN all the time, I must hate AVN.

AVN publisher Paul Fishbein still looks like a college sophomore and he's probably the busiest and hardest person to get a hold of in porn. And perhaps the most powerful.

Toshi Gold of astralocean.com showed off his new net streaming technology to John Stagliano. They talked for about an hour.

Many porners are absolutely awed when meeting Stagliano, as well as John Leslie. These men exude a quit confidence and formidable intelligence.

Gene Ross walked around in jeans, talking into his tape recorder. Very few people understand this man. Many find him hard to approach. He's a stand offish closed book, though has always been cordial to me since 9/98.

Goddess writes: Luke, I enjoyed your coverage of the CES, but I found your comment about Gene Ross being "a stand offish closed book" rather puzzling, especially when I read back through your archive stuff because he is the one person from AVN who has responded to you the most, via interviews and e-mails.

Luke: Gene and I have made a separate peace. An unspoken one largely. We talked for ten minutes Thursday, the first time we've spoken in about six months. Over the years, we've slammed each other hard and now we've reached a truce. But if I get anything good on him, I'm going for it!

Gene and I communicate through our sites and occassionally through email. But Gene is a much more discrete and private person than me. I wear my heart on my sleeve.

Rocco Siffredi is not here this year. He just had his second son four weeks ago and he didn't want to leave his wife Rosa home alone.

Emmet writes: Dear Mr. Ford, I think that it is spectacular that Rocco Siffredi had decided to spend time with his family and new baby instead of going to the alleged "fixed" AVN awards. Though what leaves me puzzled and confused is that fact that him and many other porn stars have children and continue to work in this business. I personally believe that the majority of them would not want to have their child to get in the business such as themselves yet they are still doing porn. And for those who want their children to have a normal childhood and be ignorant of pornography, are they not scared to death that someday their child might harbor harsh feelings of embarrasment and anger towards them? I wish Siffredi and other porn star's family the best of luck in those types of situations.

One porn girl grabbed my attention more than all the others, 19-year old blonde Bunny Luv, who hails from Sacramento. In porn less than a year, she appears on the boxcover of the first edition of Hustler's Barely Legal video series. Luv entered college at age 16.

Luv signed for Dane Productions on Sunday along with tall slender Jane Lixx and redhead Blair. Luv commanded the longest lines and posed enthusiastically for photos, showing off her body to advantage. Bunny's a master of playing the crowd. Guys are going crazy. She drips a potent combination of sexuality and innocence. She's tiny. I feel like I could overpower her.

Bunny had a very up and down first year in porn, encountering many whacked out, drugged out porners.

Luke: "Porn is a dangerous industry."

Bunny: "Other jobs are tough too. If I worked at McDonalds, I'd probably get sexually harassed."

I'm introduced to ill-tempered talent manager Allison Roberts (wife of AVN VP Darren Roberts) who refuses to shake my hand.

Salesman Tony Cleary gives me the tape "The Virgin" from Oliya Productions, part of the "My Midlife Crisis" series.

Earl Slate bought Kianna Bradley a gorgeous black gown with Rhinestones for the AVN Awards and they went together. They have a similarly tempestous relationship to the one Earl had with Jasmine.

Kianna: "It was a little princess gown. And Jasmin St. Clair was sitting right behind us, haha."

Luke: "Did you guys talk?"

Kianna: "No, but she keeps coming up in front of my booth every day."

Many porners registered for IA2000, the internet porn convention run by AVN which starts Monday.

Emmet writes: Dear Luke, Cherry Mirage was also smoking in "Asswoman in Wonderland", which recieved an AVN award last year I beieve. AVN Awards

Wicked, Vivid and VCA won big at Saturday night's AVN Awards.

As Adult Video News (AVN) publisher Paul Fishbein promised, this year's show moved twice as fast as last year's, concluding after two hours and 15 minutes at 11:15PM.

Wicked's "Double Feature" movie won the most awards. It was written by Martin Brimmer aka Rodger Jacobs (winning for Best Screenplay) and directed by Johnathan Morgan (who won for Best Director - Video).

The Vivid movie "Seven Deadly Sins" won the second most awards, including for Best Director, Film for Ren Savant and for Best Film. VCA's "Dark Garden" won Best Video.

The crowd of about 2000 behaved decently and many of them partied into Sunday at the C2K venue next to the awards show at the Venetian Hotel.

Fishbein announced that AVN's Special Achievement award had been renamed the Reuben Sturman award after the man who dominated porn distribution like Bill Gates dominates personal computers. And the first recipient of the award was David Sturman who read a pious pre-written speech that many in the audience talked over. Fishbein and Sturman said that without Reuben's contributions there wouldn't be such a huge porn industry today.

Paul: "Without Reuben Sturman's contributions, most of you wouldn't be working in this business today... Appropriately the first Reuben Sturman Award goes to his son David Sturman whose companies have been a constant success story... As this industry grows... David keeps the Sturman name alive and he makes his own imprint into this fascinating business and makes hiw own defense of the First Amendment."

Reuben Sturman trafficked in child porn, bestiality and other deviant material, as well as had connections with organized crime, though this was not mentioned at the Awards. Many porners would do all of the above and more today if they could get away with it.

David: "Thank you very much for this honor. Let me tell you a little story. When I was ten years old, I heard a knock on the door at my house. I answered the door. Standing there were two people, one man and a very large woman. They asked me if my mother was home. I went to get her. She talked briefly with the pair... I saw the woman put a pair of handcuffs on her and they took her away. Well, you can imagine the things that go through a ten year old's mind. I was shocked. My mother was released shortly after and much document changing ensued... But that incident underscores the legal atmosphere in the country concerning obscenity and testing the First Amendment in the '60s.

"Let me tell you, the government busted people weekly, including my father. He probably faced a dozen prosecutions and won them all. This made him the target of a series of obscenity prosecutions which eventually led to his demise."

David loses his place. It seems like nobody is listening. He reads from a paper and rarely looks at the audience.

David: "Some of you are probably wondering, 'How the hell does this affect me?' There have been obscenity busts not just in the '60s but in every decade up to the present. Companies such as Vivid, VCA, Gourmet and Leisure Time have all suffered this and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars defending their rights. Because of their successes, ultimately your rights were also protected.

"The internet seems to be the next big thing for the industry. After being raised in an era of frequent obscenity arrests, I have a certain basic level of paranoia. People are now making hardcore images available to anyone with a computer in every state of the union. This causes me some concern and should you. This is no pitch for the Free Speech Coalition but we all do need to work together.

"I'm really accepting this award on behalf of my father because he is the one who really deserves it."

Loud applause.

David: "He was a great great man and I miss him dearly. Reuben, this is for you."

There's no one I like more in the industry than David so I felt personally glad to see him honored. Also, because he's exceptionally private and paranoid, it was interesting to see him have to face a huge crowd. It's probably that paranoia which has held him back from aggressively pursuing internet business.

David did not mention in his speech that the charges which brought his father's demise were not for obscenity but rather for tax evasion (David was also sentenced and served two years) and commissioning thugs to blow up porn shops of people who owed Reuben money.

Incidentally, if I ever win an award, you better believe I am not going to mention my many sins and mistakes.

XXX writes: Reuben Sturman also "walked away" from a halfway house to which is was remanded after prison. In effect, ran away or broke out of prison. Refused to accept that his sentence, he was "on the lam" for quite a while. It should probably be called the Russ Hampshire Award if you're looking for someone to admire. When he went to jail I asked if he was angry about it and he said that he accepted it because he is ultimately responsible for the people he hires to sell his movies, and that they know where and where not to ship them. He served his sentence with dignity.

I arrived at the Venetian at 7PM and snapped pics of folks entering the AVN Awards.

Around 8:15PM, I snuck into the AVN Awards with James DiGiorgio and Rob Spallone. I expected to be discovered any minute and thrown out but that never happened. Rob and Jim protected me. When I'm close to them, I feel safe.

I chat with Chloe and her mom. Chloe's sister Cleo has done her first hardcore scene (with her boyfriend) in a Chloe-directed video for Elegant Angel "Chloe: I Came, Did You."

Chloe's mom, a well-preserved woman attending her third AVN Awards, says that she told her kids when they were young, 'Whatever you do, be the best at it.' She feels grateful that the porn industry has helped Chloe kick her drug problem. Mom has not watched any of her daughter's scenes and will not lest she be "tempted to kick some ass."

Several award recipients tonight thanked their parents.

I agreed with the AVN selections for Female Performer of the Year (Inari Vachs, winner of a Lukey Award last year for Best New Starlet) and Male Performer of the Year (Lexington Steele).

Nick East has started nickeast.com, and is selling copies of his autobiography "The Orion Compass." Now that he's 30 years of age, Nick has trimmed his hair.

On January third, Nick visited the grave of his late girlfriend Kim Kataine who died April 1, 1999. Paul Fishbein read off a long list of porners that died last year.

Watching Steve Hirsch receive his award for Best Film (it traditionally goes to Vivid), reminded me again what a relentless business machine this man is, and totally without irony or humor. His buddy Paul Fishbein seems to share his literal mindset. By contrast, David Sturman laughs more than any other porner in his position (followed by Russ Hampshire, Harry Mohney).

Scotty Schwartz and Kym Wilde tell me that they grew up in the same town in New Jersey, just four miles apart, without knowing each other.

Wilde, who turned 31 years of age on Friday, broke up with her boyfriend of many years, Duck Dumont, last May and quit Redboard Video. She plans to do some girl-girl sex scenes this year.

I asked Kym about complaints from girls that she took her bondage and discipline videos too far. Wilde said that several porn girls hate her, after doing bondage scenes with her.

Among them Katie Gold. "She was okay with it," says Kym, "then all of a sudden she just walked out. Her brain snapped. Which is a normal procedure. But she was okay, and then she just flipped out. And she was crying and saying, 'I told her not to do that.' But she was going along with it and saying it was ok.

"Amber Lynn knew what was going on. It was her first time in bondage. I was working with Jamie Gillis and her. I interviewed her and all I did was slap her face. She gave me this mad look. And then I told her to never speak to me unless I tell her to, and that's when she lost it [all of this was being videotaped for Virgin Tape 14 as a scene for Kym's bondage series]. My scene with her is really short. The camera caught everything. Her storming off. My look of surprise. And she couldn't stand me. And I kept trying to apologize. 'I'm sorry. I didn't know that you didn't know what was going on.'

"They say they'll do it because of money. But once they're there, it brings up some kind of root feelings and they can't deal with it."

Luke: "I can understand that."

Kym: "I totally understand it... I'm really nice to people beforehand and afterwards and we talk about it. Some girls are just not comfortable.

"And the whole Katie Gold thing, I do feel bad, because that's when I stopped hiring talent. And a production guy hired her and I don't know what he told her. Apparently he said that it's really light. You know how they BS just to get them there."

Luke: "Who are the other girls that are angry at you?"

Kym: "Samantha Strong... She put it down. She didn't want to get paid. She said it was just too much. Victoria Paris absolutely flipped out. She went through the whole scene. She was beating me and then I ended up beating her. And then at the end, she just looked me and she blew everything. She left all her clothes there...She walked out and said, 'I can't believe this.' And then word spread.

"Any person who has a problem with me can take it out on me. I don't care. I will stand there and they can do anything they want to me because I didn't do it on purpose. It's just that I believe in realism. And Red Board Video is known for roughness. They try to get the girls to cry... I'm thinking of starting a line called Payback. Hey, you wanna be in a movie?"

Luke: "No. I can't even watch your movies. I'm too sensitive."

Kym: "I understand. I'm not that much into it either. I'm not into the whole scene. In fact, real BD & SM people hate me because I am just an actress."

The AVN Awards began soon after 9PM. Herschel Savage introduced a gagged Alisha Klass. Her over the top profane performance at last year's show, full of references to the joy of having Chloe's fist up her ass, drew many negative reviews, including from AVN's Fishbein. Klass remonstrated the crowd for objecting to her performance at last year's awards. Then Klass delivered a seven minute speech full of advice to new talent which boiled down to - don't do anything you don't want to do. And register your name as a domain name on the net.

Metsfan writes: Cherry Mirage won't let you take a picture of her while she is smoking? Then ask her why she did the scene in Hardcore Schoolgirls 9 when Max f---ed her WHILE she was smoking?????? Sounds like the typical s--- from a porn star. She'll probably also tell you she is currently studying in medical school, or better yet she probably already has a college degree.

Lorenza Collini writes: Dear Mr. Ford, I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed your lack of coverage of the AVN awards. Why on earth waste your time attending them if you do not intend to report the winners?

Though I find Nick East totally adorable and love to watch him in action, why would we possibly be interested in his year old haircut? If you were actually an up-to-date observer of the porn industry, you would realize that his haircut is old news. We have enjoyed seeing his beautiful face and eyes for quite some time,without the long locks. If he had cut off his locks and lost his manhood, that certainly would have been a newsworthy item.

Electronic Telegraph: ISRAEL'S leading orthodox rabbis have issued a ruling banning the internet from Jewish homes, arguing that it is "1,000 times more dangerous than television" and threatens the survival of the country.

The ruling, issued by the Council of Torah Sages, is an attempt by the rabbis to halt the infiltration of "sin and abomination" from the internet into the homes of the ultra-orthodox, whose children have hitherto been shielded from the temptations of the modern world.

The rabbis recalled that they had banned television 30 years ago, and said that the dangers from the internet were even greater. They said it "puts the future generations of Israel in grave danger in a way that no other threat has since Israel became a nation". The newspaper of Degel Hatorah, one of the strictest of the religious parties in Israel, said the internet was "the world's leading cause of temptation, it incites and encourages sin and abomination of the worst kind."

The majority of Israelis, who are secular, will ignore the ruling. But it is likely to deprive young members of the ultra-orthodox community - those who wear the black hats and long coats of the European ghetto - of a window on the secular world. Religious leaders are worried about a growing number of youths who break out of their closed communities in search of a secular life - a development that is partly blamed on the arrival of the computer in their homes, giving them the chance to join discussion groups, hear forbidden music and read about life outside.
