AL’s new series on Colorad-hos

I take pride in being the resident New Yorker around here, however I have to let on that technically that isn’t true anymore.  Hasn’t been true for a few months now.  I had an opportunity to come to Denver, Colorado to get a degree, and now instead of views of tall buildings, I have a view of the mountains.  I’m studying for a degree in English, with licenses to teach high school English and English to non-native speakers, which is explains why I am such a stickler for grammar.

While I’ll always be most comfortable and at home in the New York area, it doesn’t really bother me all that much to be away.  New York hasn’t been what it was for a long, long time, though I feel it still has more character than any place in the U.S.  My goal now is to learn more about where I live and find out what it’s niche is in the U.S.

Coming from New York, Denver is a huge difference.  No other city has the pace of New York, so immediately l feel the difference. Here I think people talk with accents, while they think I’m the one with the accent.  They have a strange accent, it’s not from the south, but has twang in it.  There are more Mexicans than black people, no Puerto Ricans and finding a decent slice of pizza is a major challenge.  In fact, any sort of NY type food is considered a delicacy and exploited, though it’s never done well (think pizza, bagels, deli food etc) Additionally, I have to deal with people’s conceptions on what New Yorkers are.  Most of the time it actually works in my favor though.  Women get mesmerized by the accident and guys think twice about fucking with you.

Colorado is in the Mountain Time Zone, which I have heard described as a rumor.  I am here to tell you it in fact does exist.  One thing Denver has going for it is the fact it is that it’s like the New York of it’s time zone.  It’s the most happening thing around this region.  Trust me, I wouldn’t have taken an opportunity to move to Wyoming. 

I have found that a lot of people in NY can’t think of anything when they think of Colorado.  It’s a place with no real identity.  After asking enough people, I get a few general ideas of what  they think Colorado is like.  The first thing most people think of is skiing, which is plentiful, though no less than 2 hours away from the Denver area.  Another thing people think of is sports.  It is one of the few cities in the U.S. to have an NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL team.  Let me tell you, the Broncos in Colorado are no joke, people are really into that shit.   Coors beer comes to other people’s minds, which in fact is actually very popular.  They have a bizarre law which allows non liquor stores (grocery stores, 7-11 etc) to sell beer, however it is a special 3.2% beer.  People actually buy that shit too, watered down piss water that you have to drink twice as much as to get drunk.  Lastly, a lot of people associate Colorado with "South Park", which in fact nails Colorado to a "T."  There are tons of inside jokes and references only people who live here would understand.

At the same time while being in this new place, I decided it was worth trying to take a new direction in what I write for this site as well.  I’m trying to flip the script here a bit.  With that being said, every now and then I am going to add to a series called Coloradhos.  It’s a snappy title, don’t you think?  Anyway, the focus of Coloradohos will be the various different adult industry facets in Colorado.  Once in a while I’ll talk with some people who own an adult themed business or are involved with the adult industry and live in Colorado, and see how what they do is affected by being in this area.

Someone on the board said I should do some legwork, so here it is.  Unfortunately since I’m not in NY anymore, I can’t contact all the porn escorts or go to any events, so this will have to do for now.  The first installment will feature a company that makes porn here in Colorado, and it definitely has its own flair to it.  Until next time…
