I got the numbers from people studies done by U Penn Laura Ann ? (name in my office computer), several European, Asian and Latiamerican studies published in the US by Melissa Farley (but I have read the Spanish one on line) and a Canadian study. Numbers match.

Then there’s Farley’s credibility. She’s come out with some pretty crazy stuff, like saying that every whore in porn is regularly raped on set, or comparing BDSM play to war crimes.
Her look at prostitution in New Zealand, for example, is very different from the New Zealand government’s research. Their studies indicate that decriminalisation made life a bit easier and safer for whores, yet Farley’s still 100% against it.

But there are less ideological studies that Faley that has similar results regarding the links between mental illnesses and sex work.
BTW I do favor legalization for the same reasons Bob C states. In my experence it makes safer and easier to live the bussiness and to leave it. One thing I remember from the New Zealand government’s study was that different groups of whores had very different experiences and problems. “How old were you when you had your first sexual experience of any kind?”
but that had turned into:

by the time Farley was talking about the results of the study.
According to Farley, girls were starting in prostitution as young as 9 years old, with most starting before they were legal. Actually about 80% surveyed said they were over 18 when they started whoring.
Things like that remind me to be skeptical whenever someone starts quoting (lies, damn lies and) statistics. I wouldn’t trust figures from “sex-worker rights activists” either, they all have an agenda to push.

Again is true, there are not porn exclusive studies yet, but i have the impression that porn stars are more disfuntional and damaged on the average than pure escort types who often can hold a civilian job and/or go to school while escorting or “pure” stripper types that strip but do not escort or do porn.
