The arrogance, malice and disingenuousness of Shelley Lubben is on full display here.
The video is entitled “Porn Pimps and Porn Stars Act Like Fools at Safety Meeting”, it does not include any shots of the audience which would show just how MANY adult performers attended, and the video description reads, in part: “Watch the porn industry act like fools for the right to have less health and safety on the porn set. Anything to make a buck off of porn stars.”
Since Lubben had nothing of any relevance to say at the OSHA meeting (leading to her presence being omitted from EVERY media report of the gathering) her video is mostly comprised of clips from her second appearance at UCLA, in which she complains (in between hair flips) that the industry workers (i.e. the porn stars) never show up for these meetings, only their Satan-serving masters and pimps in the “porn industry.” Of course, at that relatively-unpublicized UCLA appearance, she was speaking unchallenged by members of the adult community, unlike the OSHA meeting where performers, producers and agents — en masse — told her off and shut her down.
Lubben, in her fantasy world of delusion and propaganda, feels free to ignore the FACT that current performers ARE engaged in this fight and NONE OF THEM SUPPORT HER EFFORT TO “TAKE DOWN PORN” by “stabb[ing] the beast in seven places until it bleeds to death.” More performers turned out for this meeting than all the other OSHA meetings combined.
“My heart is breaking for these people,” she says. Yes, these people — these fools. These mentally ill degenerates who “don’t know how to read contracts.” They are all fools because they don’t see that she is their anointed silicon savior in pink.
“Porn stars are prostitutes,” she adds, universalizing as usual. This video also refers to Duane Duke as the “FSC Porn Lawyer” which is false.

You know what Mr. Michael Whiteacre? There is a lot of truth in what Shelley Lubben says… How do I know? Because I worked in the porn industry longer then some of the porn performers have been alive. This industry is loaded with dirt bags from the company owners right down the food chain. I have dealt with every level of person in this biz for years upon years. For every single decent person you trot out, there are 100 more dirt bags lurking behind the tree.
The owners and directors don’t give a flying monkey’s ass about the porn performers. I know it, you know it, everyone in this business knows it. This business is nothing more then a collection of middle aged to elderly dirt bags preying on the next girl gullible enough or dumb enough to get involved with porn. You try really hard to whitewash the truth, but some of decent people who actually have morals and consciences in porn really know the score.

And these are the so called business people that care so much about the the young naive girls that hop off the bus and make them money.

I’d have liked to see more footage of the meeting in this video, but from what I COULD see (well more like hear), quite a few in attendance were very disrespectful to the directors of the meeting.
The interrupting, laughing and mocking definitely isn’t the way to go (very unprofessional for so called “professionals”).

@Monica – With respect, you’re judging it from a few clips — it was a 4 1/2 hour meeting. Had you been there, and/or seen the all of it on video (which Shelley’s friend Ricky B. didn’t capture — he only got some of the carrying on and Lubben’s one sentence non-contribution) you might take a different view. Had you heard the condescending tone of two of the OSHA representatives, you might also have a different view.
As for the attendees being angry and “disrespectful,” I’d counter that this is democracy in action, and it gets rowdy. Raised voices indicate passion; they should not be feared except by tyrants.
I say, thank G-d we live in a country where we CAN loudly protest, and laugh at the ridiculous assertions of outsiders to the industry (such as the claim that female ejaculation isn’t likely to get in a fellow performer’s eye! We all laughed at that, and Eli Cross noted that even as a cameraman that has happened to him). We all laughed at the claims of “caring” experts which had no basis in reality — and there is nothing wrong with that.

@Monica – I agree. Everyone interested would be more empowered were they more informed of the process, the arguments, and the personalities involved.
The fullest, most faithful written report (IMHO) was filed by Mark Kernes at AVN. It has historical context and a lot of the most important quotes of the day from both sides.
I do have to agree with the Grim Reaper in one aspect to his post. I have never seen so many business people fucking over the consumer as you have in porn. It would never be tollerated anywhere else except maybe the stock market or politicans and their PACs.
Over the years from buying porn us fans get fucked so many times from scammers that sell porn. Buying stuff that arrives and its not what your ordered, double billing of monthly charges, advertising old material as new (they just change the name), false advertising, and lots more.
Generally the consumer won’t report it to their bank or credit card company due to the nature of the transaction.
@Karmafan – Absolutely. But the more “mainstream” adult enterprises become, the less that happens. Same thing with prostitution — sex work becomes safer for all involved, on either side of the equation, when it’s legal and not demonized.
As for rip-offs, the embarrassment factor is key. It’s not that it’s porn per se, it’s that people are ashamed to speak up because it has to do with *sex*. That’s a weakness that is exploited by cons and scammers.
But you put your finger on something else, Karmafan. There exists a culture of people fucking over the little guy. The banks, politicians, etc… That’s because there’s no accountability, and there’s no accountability because we’ve been lulled to sleep; we’re getting high on Paxil and McDonalds.
Shelley did make a point that (before the last meeting, at least) very few performers showed up in proportion to the number that work in this industry.
I wouldn’t go as far as saying that we acted like fools last Tuesday, but it isn’t entirely removed from the truth, either. There’s such a thing as proper procedure in meetings which weren’t followed. The industry has every right to be upset with OSHA for a few reasons, but heckling is not the way to handle it. OSHA hasn’t followed proper procedure correctly, either, which is why they have absurd language, such as claiming that condoms “protect” when condom manufacturers don’t even make that claim. I plan to speak more the next time I attend to address some specific issues and that’s what more performers and industry people should do, as well.
Another thing is, when performers and industry show up late, it makes us look bad, especially when they start bringing up points that were already addressed arlier in the meeting before they wandered in. If this were a regular type of job instead of a public meeting and you showed up late you could well be fired, and showing up late suggests you might have a 1/2-assed attitude about the whole thing.
@Jeremy – There’s a learning curve. Performers had a real trial by fire on the 7th. They have now been seasoned by the experience. At least they’re part of the process now. I hope you’ll join in helping tame their emotions and hone their arguments in advance of the next meeting, Jeremy.
My dad was a member of a couple of unions, including the Int’l Brotherhood of Teamsters. Do you have any idea how small a percentage of union members show up for meetings? People are turned-off by the whole political process — numbed by Paxil and placated by McDonald’s, they see it as futile or above their heads. That’s how authoritarians get their way — breaking people’s will to resist.
I will also add, however, that there were just as many calm, direct, and inquisitive attendees from the performers’ side as there were flabbergasted, outraged, emotionally-reactive performers. By and large, those who had availed themselves of the opportunity to be provided with the relevant documents and the history of the process acquitted themselves beautifully — with no heckling. Nina Hartley, Ela Darling, Lily Cade, Danny Wylde, Eli Cross, Sarah Shevon, Ernest Greene, Ryan Keely and others.
As for showing up late, there was an good deal of traffic that morning coming in from the valley, but yes, you’re right. Next time we have to get everyone to meet up early and walk in together, united. Lesson learned. Perhaps even Shelley will arrive on time and not leave early at the next meeting.

Years ago I worked for a major corporation (in the top 100 of the Fortune 500) and every other year they sent around paperwork for us to elect officers to the board of directors. We were not the main office of the company. Our plant had 6000 people and the entire company has probably 75,000-100,000 employees.
We were asked to vote for people that none of us had ever met and knew nothing about. So we usually voted for the person that had already been in that position and that was the end of it. Its pretty common in companys for the rank and file members to just go with the flow and then get our asses back to work. The fact that a small portion of porn stars showed up is pretty typical.

If you don’t get on with a director don’t work for them again. Put them on your blacklist as you do to performers. If it was back ended as you claim there would be a lot more police records and the mainstream media would EAT IT UP! A lot of girls get into the industry thinking it will make them famous or they will be the next Jenna Jameson or Jesse Jane or Tera Patrick – And just as rich. When that doesn’t happen and they realize their about to be used up and thrown out. They get desperate for that needed attention and money. Can you blame the directors and back-end people for that? You are a grown adult take action for your own decisions and mistakes.
They start drugging and drinking too on their own choice. Some start off slow and do it to party and be cool and get addicted and others do it for depression. Because they aren’t getting the attention they need. Their dreams of being the biggest in porn didn’t happen. Or a lot of them have daddy issues. This is a business not a nursery.

Lastly if you want out of porn it’s easy you QUIT – Get a mainstream job. If you are attractive enough to do mainstream porn – you obviously don’t hold many flaws. It’s called a 9 to 5 job. I know that’s unheard of..but there is nothing holding you back from getting a job out of porn.
They have education assistance and if you are straight male or female you don’t have anyone discriminating against you to get a job. So save the sob stories and realize you are your own WORSE Enemy!
